[cayugabirds-l] Correction on Cerulean post

2020-05-07 Thread Peter Saracino
Hi folks- one correction to my recent post about the cerulean warbler and
waterthrush on Armitage Rd. I saw the cerulean on the WAYNE county [north]
side of the road.
Sorry for any confusion.

[cayugabirds-l] Prothonotary warblers

2020-05-07 Thread Joe Welklin
Hi all,

I had two Prothonotary warblers moving North from 867 Taughannock Blvd just
30-40 minutes ago. They're moving north along the edge of the lake in
between 89 and the lake. If anyone's interested I'd recommend walking
slowly up the edge of the road and keeping an eye out for yellow. They were
singing a little bit! They were moving quite slow.

[cayugabirds-l] Cerulean Warbler and Northern Waterthrush

2020-05-07 Thread Peter Saracino
Cerulean warbler today on Armitage Rd. Seneca County Side (north side) of
road - west side of one lane bridge - very near current location of the
prothonatory nest box.
Also there is a northern waterthrush on both sides of Armitage Rd. (I heard
one and heard and saw the other) around the same location.

[cayugabirds-l] Cliff swallows on HIle School Rd Wetland--Wed May 6

2020-05-07 Thread AB Clark
I haven’t rechecked today but the swallow species distribution has shifted as
of yesterday, Wed May 6: more Barn Swallows but also 2-3 Cliff Swallows,
looking a different shape, no tail streamers and with distinct light rumps
clearly seen. At least one Rough-winged Swallow was still there, and some Tree
Swallows as has been the case for the last 10 days, perhaps. Losing track of
time.

Also between 5-520pm, an Osprey going N along the waterway, and a Peregrine
going across without stopping, and a Green Heron, the first *I* have seen. I
think others have seen one. Female Redwinged Blackbirds sound like they are
nesting, but I haven’t seen any carrying material yet.

Then around 630, after another Zoom session, a female Harrier was coursing back
and forth across the field East of my house. She finally left diagonally SE,
probably across Ed Hill Rd. Past years, just across (east) Ed Hill from the
first big fields on the west side of Ed Hill as you go S from HIle School
intersection, I have seen a pair frequently and figure they nest well east of
the road there.

Anne

PS apologies for not getting these into eBird at the time. eBird and my phone
are not collaborating these days.

[cayugabirds-l] Weather for May 9th Global Big Day in central NY....not good news

2020-05-07 Thread David Nicosia
All,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Saturday's weather is looking
downright awful. We are looking at a record breaking cold air mass with
strong northwest winds and temperatures mainly in the 30s most of the day.
In addition, there will be off and on snow/rain showers which will reduce
visibility at times. The winds are going to be the worst averaging around
20 mph or more sustained w/ gust to 35 mph at times. The eastern and
southern shores of the Finger Lakes could see wind gusts of 45 mph or more.
With temperatures in the 30s most of the day, that equates to wind chill
temperatures in the low 20s. If you want to bird the finger lakes you may
want to consider the western sides of the lakes.

See https://go.usa.gov/xvG7S which is Ithaca's detailed NOAA forecast

I also did one for Montezuma since I know a lot folks like to bird the
complex... https://go.usa.gov/xvGA3

The web page that allows you pick any point in the CONUS can be found
here https://www.weather.gov/forecastpoints Go to this site, zoom and
click on the map of desired location or enter zipcode or name of town and
state. These forecasts are updated at least once per 3 hours or more. Let
me know if you have questions. This is probably the best free weather site
for detailed forecast information from NOAA!

Best, good luck and bundle up!!!

At the end of my wanderings for errands this morning, I checked out Stewart

martin house set up by the Cayuga Bird Club. Love their bold songs!

Hello partners,

The second webinar in WNY PRISM's Webinar Series will take place today at
2:00-3:00 PM. Today's Birds and Invasives webinar will discuss the complex
relationship between birds and invasive species. On the surface, many invasive
species may seem like a boon for our native birds, but as we look deeper into
their impacts on our ecosystems, we see that all isn't as it once seemed.
Management is also complicated as we try to balance short and long-term
impacts, both positive and negative. Join Andrea Locke, WNY PRISM Coordinator
as she sheds some light on these complexities and discusses invasive bird
species, invasive species impacts on native bird populations and management
strategies. Please see the login information below if you'd like to join in!

Next week's webinar on Thursday, May 14 will feature Lucy Nuessle, WNY PRISM's
Terrestrial Projects Manager and Emily Thiel, WNY PRISM's Education and
Outreach Program Manager as they discuss boot brush stations and their use in
preventing the spread of invasive species. See our

I've seen chipmunks and outdoor cats collect bird eggs from nests and move
them. Not sure if that is what is happening here, but it might be.

So hear's a mystery. Yesterday morning I went out the entry door and found one
robin egg sitting in the corner on the stones of the patio. By afternoon,
there were two. This morning there are three. Have you ever heard of bizarre
