[cayugabirds-l] Scissor-tailed Flycatcher continues in Candor, Tioga County

2023-05-05 Thread Dave Nutter
Adam Troyer reports that the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher continues at his
family’s dairy farm at the end of TOMAK (also spelled TOMACK) Road in the town
of Candor in Tioga County.

It’s a spectacular bird. Wear muck boots, it’s usually near the pastured cows.

[cayugabirds-l] The "history" of wild leeks

2023-05-05 Thread Peter Saracino
So here's how Chicago got its name.
Wild leeks grew in profusion in a place in the Midwest and the natives
called the place "the skunk place" (in their language shika'ko). The area
was eventually settled and the Indian term Anglicized to Chicago.
