[cayugabirds-l] orchard oriole
I thought I saw a male yesterday and confirmed a sighting today. Sheffield Road, Ithaca. Also just watched several swallows chasing and bombing a red-winged blackbird male. He perched in a tree and they swooped around him a few times and then left. [cayugabirds-l] Arnot Forest Brewsters Warbler
While birding Irish Hill Rd near the NW gate of the Arnot Forest this morning, Rachel Lodder, Jared Dawson and I stopped for what we thought was a blue-winged warbler (Merlin agreed). Rachel spotted the bird's movements; I got a good view of it and was surprised to see a bright yellow crown and thick yellow wing patches! The dark eyeline, white throat and pale belly suggested a hybrid golden-winged/blue-winged warbler -- looks like Brewster's type. Rachel confirmed visually. The bird continued to sing a Bee-Buzzz song. Very cool-looking bird! [cayugabirds-l] Rail trail/botanic garden birds, bird strikes, and Evening Grosbeak
A jaunt from East Hill along the rail trail to Monkey Run and back through the Botanic Gardens produced a number of warblers and other birds this morning including: Chesnut sided, blue-winged, yellow, common yellowthroat, overbird, hooded (calling on the north side of Fall Creek near the expiremental hemlock plot), redstart; orioles are everywhere, red-eyed vireo, scarlet tanager, rose-breasted grosbeak, wood thrush, kingfisher, green heron, GBH, amongst the usual year round inhabitants. I did not hear any veery, which usually nest around that stretch of Fall Creek. Closer to home in Freeville, a lone adult female Evening Grosbeak was at our feeder station yesterday afternoon and again this morning. A white crowned sparrow was present yesterday as well. Lastly, I picked up a dead blue-winged warbler and wood thrush outside the Vet Research Tower this morning that I will bring by the lab. Enjoy spring! -Andrew Miller -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds have fledged the nest.
Big news in Newfield ... five little eastern bluebird fledgelings emerged from the blue bird nest box outside our window this morning! We have been supplementing their diet with live mealworm larvae since mid April. It seems to have helped. Adults had attempted, unsuccessfully, to fledge a brood for the last two years. This year they have five young ones on the wing as of this morning! ♥️ Madonna Stallmann -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Psychology study
Jim Tanaka, a psychology researcher in Canada, asked if our members could help with some cognitive research he's doing. Some of you may remember an earlier research he asked us to do back in 2021. From that first experiment he learned more about flaws of the survey design (too complex and time consuming), and so this time is trying a simpler experiment. See below for how to participate. Suan -- Birdwatchers! We need your help for a psychology study examining the visual strategies of birders We are psychologists from the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. We are conducting an international study examining the visual perceptions of bird watchers. In our study, you will be shown images of common species of birds and asked to judge their similarity. Some key information about the study: • Completely online, and conducted in the browser • Approximately 30 minutes in length • Study opens May 8th, 2023, and ends on July 1st, 2023. • At the end of the study, three lucky participants will be awarded a prize in a random lottery Please help us understand the perceptual expertise of birding by participating in this scientific project. To participate in the study, please go to: https://embedding-collection.herokuapp.com/ This research is conducted by Dr. Jim Tanaka (jtan...@uvic.ca), Department of Psychology, University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and approved by the Human Ethics Committee, Protocol #20-0520. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pCtZxREMCiBtmaTyTBlHQrrxKN6o_4Xy/view?usp=share_link -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
