[cayugabirds-l] Muckrace Sponsorships

2023-08-17 Thread Kenneth J. Kemphues
As many local birders are aware. The Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex
is holding their annual Muckrace on September 8-9, 7pm - 7pm. This is an
opportunity for fun birding during Fall migration with the overall goal of
raising money for improvements to the complex. It offers great birding
opportunities in a variety of habitats while socializing with old friends and
making new ones with the added spice of friendly competition. The deadline for
registration is August 29.

You can learn about the Muckrace and register at
https://friendsofmontezuma.org/projects-programs/muckrace/

The Cayuga Bird Club is sponsoring up to three teams this year; we will
reimburse the registration fee.One team has already requested sponsorship.
We invite Cayuga Bird Club members and other interested birders to consider
participating under our remaining sponsorships.

If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity, either as a team leader or
as a member of a team. Write to me at
k...@cornell.edu. DO NOT REPLY TO THE LIST_SERVE. I
will do my best to coordinate the formation of a team by identifying a team
leader and initiating communications between team members.Sponsorships will
be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Best,

Ken Kemphues
Treasurer
Cayuga Bird Club

[cayugabirds-l] Red Crossbill @ Hammond

2023-08-17 Thread Suan Yong
A female or juv red crossbill just came down to eat grit at the Hammond Hill
main parking lot. Has flown off but seemed to like that spot and may come back.

[cayugabirds-l] Re: cayugabirds-l digest: August 17, 2023

2023-08-17 Thread r...@att.net
Suan,
I think you are right. Willow is the more southerly species and its call is a
soft whit. Alder might be found on higher hills around Ithaca and its call is
a sharper pit. Good find. --Randy

At Cass Park's dragon boat docks, the hedges to the left of the little bay is
hosting a pair of fledgling Traill's Flycatchers being fed by a parent. Fun to
watch. I'm guessing it's Willow Flycatcher from habitat, but could perhaps be
Alder? Fledglings are making "chit" calls, parent is silent.
