[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club February 2024 meeting

2024-01-31 Thread Colleen Richards
The February meeting of the Cayuga Bird Club will be a Zoom meeting on Monday,
Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Register (for free) at http://tinyurl.com/cbc-2024-02
We hope you will join us for the presentation, "Bird-window collisions: a
clear and present danger". Luke DeGroote, Carnegie Museum of Natural History,
will be our speaker.
Smack! That's the sound of a bird hitting a window-and you've probably heard it
often.Collisions with windows cause millions of bird fatalities every year.
Luke DeGroote will discuss how Carnegie Museum of Natural History is addressing
the issue by elucidating where collisions are more likely to occur, testing
collision reducing markers at Powdermill Nature Reserve's experimental flight
tunnel, tracking post-collision survival using new technologies, and reducing
collisions through community engagement.About the Speaker: Luke DeGroote
received his MSc. in Natural Resources from Ohio State and B.S. in Wildlife
Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since 2012, DeGroote has
overseen Carnegie Museum of Natural History's avian research programs including
the operation of Powdermill's Avian Research Center (PARC) where he studies
songbird migration, avian disease, breeding phenology, and avian perception of
glass. DeGroote aims to promote avian conservation through research,
partnerships, and outreach. Hope many of you will be onscreen with us. Colleen

Re: [cayugabirds-l] our birds are picky, only Sunflower seeds for them

2024-01-31 Thread AB Clark
I have no idea whether this thought applies to Nyger and Sunflower, or for
that matter, mixes with one or more kinds of millet and some safflower
seed, but in my days with a research flock of budgerigars, it may be the
mix that is the best diet. It transpires that canary seed and millet seed
have very different and somewhat complimentary nutritional profiles. For
their seed portion of the diet, it was supposed to be much better for
budgies to eat both, and indeed they did (except when fearful, when they
switched to all millet, but that is another story).

But to relate it to what everyone sees at their feeders, budgies do NOT eat
equal amounts of the two seeds which do require different processing
techniques. If one followed what they were eating seed by seed vs spending
time eating vs were interested in eating after only one was available for a
while, one might come up with different impressions on their preferences.

So I wonder--even if goldfinches are concentrating on sunflower chips
(speedy and oily and big return on time), do they also occasionally eat
nyger as a more complete diet? I don't know that I have ever seen a study
looking at preferences before or after having only one choice--and that
might be when one would notice an unusual or opposite preference for a
time. As observers, we might interpret visits to another feeder as
"avoiding more dominant species", when in fact the bird is making its quick
diet-completing stop!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Pine Siskins in Brooktondale

2024-01-31 Thread bob mcguire
This is pure speculation - but we had a flock of 40 +/- PISK on January 1st
(Christmas count) foraging on white pine cones in the small grove at the corner
of Hanshaw and Etna Roads. Same flock???

Re: [cayugabirds-l] our birds are picky, only Sunflower seeds for them

2024-01-31 Thread Fred Rimmel
Back in the 80’s I participated in a bird feed and feeder study conducted for
USFW out of Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. One of the results was that the
“favorite” food of goldfinches was hulled sunflower kernels. That’s not to say
they won’t eat other seeds just that when given options and when they aren’t
out competed at the feeding station by other species they prefer hulled
sunflower. This was just one of the results of the study that looked at
numerous seed types and presentation methods. We feed just hulled sunflower in
our feeders and in recent weeks regularly have 30 to 75 or more goldfinches at
a time. Also, had a few pine siskin for the first time today.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Pine Siskins in Brooktondale

2024-01-31 Thread Dave Nutter
I have yet to see Pine Siskins at my feeders, although I can’t swear they
aren’t among the birds who empty them daily when I’m not looking, and I’m
impressed by how well the winter-plumaged Goldfinches blend in with the dead
Goldenrod.

So I followed up on yesterday’s eBird report (below) by Caleb Centanni at
Comstock Knoll, east of Beebe Lake on Cornell Campus. Although the Pine Siskins
were not evident in the particular tree which Caleb described, I saw about the
same number as he did feeding on cones in the tops of other tall White Pines
immediately to the west of the Nevin Welcome Center and elsewhere around the
short paved loop of former road. This is the first time I have actually
associated this species with Pines. Previously I had thought they deserved a
name change.

If you want to get closer to their elevation you can climb a few stairs on
gravel paths to the summit of Comstock Knoll. For better lighting in case it’s
sunny you may be able to scope them from the paid parking lot near the west end
of Arboretum Rd. I walked in from the free parking lot for the Wildflower
Garden off of Forest Home Drive just south of the upstream one-lane bridge over
Fall Creek near where Caldwell Rd ends. The gravel paths from there were free
of snow and the wooden stairs up out of the flood plain were nearly free of
snow and quite passable.

Black oil sunflower seed in the big hopper, sure, but I offer Nyjer all by
itself in a dedicated finch feeder, and the Goldfinches are very happy with
that. I buy 5# bags at Agway; Lizzie Mae’s Birdseed and Dry Goods Company. The
bags are zip-lock, but I transfer the Nyjer to 1-qt plastic jugs with screw
caps; they stand up in the back of the fridge or freezer, taking up very little
space, and they make topping-up the feeder very easy and neat.

[cayugabirds-l] our birds are picky, only Sunflower seeds for them

2024-01-31 Thread Nigel Dyson-Hudson
Some folks on CAYUGABIRDS-L fill their feeders with different seeds -
Sunflower, Niger, etc. We have tried this in the past with Sunflower and
Niger seed feeds. Even the Goldfinches barely touched our Niger seed. It
was "fresh" from Agway, stored in the fridge until put out. Forget about
the mixes with Milo and Corn.
So now we just put out Sunflower seed, spread some seed on trays on the
ground. Last winter we had a Mourning Dove that figured out how to land
on our rectangular metal feeder. Which was quite entertaining to watch.
Since this feeder has a squirrel baffle on the post, we have used a
stick to fix the movable perch in place.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Pine Siskins in Brooktondale

Following in Larry Hymes' footsteps, we have 11 Pine Siskins with the
Goldfinches at our feeders in Brooktondale this morning!

I'm excited--haven't seen them all winter.
