Re: [cayugabirds-l] All male Ospreys now?

2023-03-29 Thread Elaina M. McCartney
This morning an Osprey on the Union field light pole swooped down to the grass,
appeared to grab something tiny, alight back on the pole, then swoop down again
and appear to grab something invisible to me, and go back up onto the pole. The
pole was swaying a bit in the wind.

On Mar 29, 2023, at 19:33, Dave Nutter wrote:

It’s possible that the 2 Ospreys atop the Union Fields nest were males
glowering at each other or enjoying social time until the females arrive. One
Osprey was on that nest this afternoon. I couldn’t check all the possible
perches among other light arrays for a second bird.

Today at Allan Treman I saw a single Osprey for awhile atop the perch on the
platform nearest the Hangar Theatre. I agree that’s likely a male, and I don’t
know if he is just checking out sites or is trying to claim that site or
actually used it last year and is very possessive. But he didn’t stay there a
long time.

Then there’s the nest which has been used for many years in the field NW of the
marina and closer to the lake. For awhile today there were 2 Ospreys on it side
by side close together. Were they chummy, or was a second one trying to evict
the first? At one point I saw fluttering which suggested copulation, but I
wasn’t quick enough with the binoculars to be sure. Meanwhile a 3rd Osprey was
perched in a tree nearby. And a few minutes later all 3 had flown off. It’s
possible that none of these nests are actually claimed yet. But I’m letting
Candace know what I - who am not an Osprey expert - observe. And I urge
everyone else to do the same.

Additional observations at Allan Treman today include:
A swooping display flight high over the south end of Allan Treman State Marine
Park, although the Osprey was not carrying a fish or stick as they often do in
displays. My guess is it’s the same bird who was on the Hangar nest.

An Osprey eating a fish atop a tree in Jetty Woods near the north end along
Cayuga Inlet while another Osprey perched atop another tree farther south but
not close enough to the platform at the NW corner of Newman Golf Course to say
to me that it was interested in that site.

drivers, and most of the pedestrians ignore it, so the bird is tolerant. Many
Snow Geese who don’t finish migration are not sick but have been wounded by
hunters. Sometimes they gather into small flocks who swim around Cayuga Lake.
I’d rather let it be. But if it is sick, then handling it would not be a smart
idea for the people.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Large Crow flight

2021-02-22 Thread Elaina M. McCartney
Approximately 5:20 pm today I noticed a steady flight of Crows from my vantage
just north of Hog Hole, heading approximately toward Cayuga Heights/Cornell
Campus, moving in the approximately the opposite direction of the large morning
flight of 2/17. I don’t know the extent of today’s flight, I assume it had
been going on for a while before I looked up and noticed—pretty gray out there.
I don’t have complete numbers, but did a quick count of maybe 100+ birds in
less than a minute. Looked like an evening “return” flight.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Large Crow flight

Shortly before sunrise this morning I noticed out the window a stream (actually
a river) of Crows flying north following the west shore of Cayuga Lake. To
attempt to count them I recorded a 20 sec video, and was able to count 270 by
examining it slowly. The steady flight, which seemed to originate somewhere
southish of Hog Hole, lasted at least 15 minutes at a rate of approximately 800
per minute. I don’t know how long it had been going on when I first noticed
it, but there were upwards of 12,000 individuals while I watched them pass at a
steady rate. Some stragglers in groups of 8-10 followed up until about 7 am.

During the GBBC I observed three immature Bald Eagles simultaneously from my
window, making passes over a large raft of aythya and Canada Geese, just north
of Hog Hole. It was the first time I’d seen more than two at a time.
Yesterday I observed a mature Bald Eagle land in a nearby tree during a brief
snow flurry. Last fall a neighbor had limbs removed from a large, dying red
oak tree for safety, and constructed an osprey platform on what’s left of the
tree. Hoping there will be some nesting interest.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Where are all my feeder birds

2017-10-18 Thread Elaina M. McCartney
I have noticed a dramatic drop in the squirrel population and feeder birds SW
shore Cayuga Lake in the past two months. I like to photograph squirrels so I
noticed. Saw one lactating female about two weeks ago, and that's it. Up until
a couple months ago I also had flying squirrels visiting every night, now
nothing. There's a bonanza acorn crop, so maybe the squirrels don't need to
raid my place this year. Tube feeder stays full days longer than it used to.
Blue Jays used to show up whenever I tossed out some seeds on my deck. Now the
seeds sit there uneaten. I do have woodpeckers and Mourning Doves around the
yard, and a few chipmunks.

[cayugabirds-l] American Coots

2017-01-26 Thread Elaina M. McCartney
A flock of at least 100 American Coots has been hanging out at the southwest
corner of Cayuga Lake just north of Hog Hole for about a week. It's been a
long time since I've seen such a large number of Coots here. Another unusual
observation, a standup paddle boarder was heading north up the lake yesterday.

The Western Tanager was enjoying the fruits of a tree in Wee Stinky Glen

The WESTERN TANAGER is still being reported via eBird daily on Cornell
University campus in the same area - the alcove at the east entrance to the
underground Cornell Store (good for sunning and eating fruits of vines on the
wall), the south and west sides of Day Hall (whose inhabitants put seed on the
windowsills), the nearby stream known as Wee Stinky Glen and the fruiting trees
over it, with forays to the south side of Sage Chapel.

Please keep reporting this bird. Also, any photographers or observers of
detail, please let me know if you believe you are seeing progression of molt.
I'd love to see the bird with more adult or breeding male characteristics such
as red around the face or darker back feathers.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] guns at Stewart Park

2015-11-13 Thread Elaina M. McCartney
Here is a non-political early-morning photograph taken from the densely
populated southwest shore of Cayuga Lake 24 October 2015 showing rowers heading
out from the inlet in a northwest direction past my house for their usual
morning practice. The occupants in the boat to the right had set up elaborate
decoys and camouflage in the dark in front of my house, with the shooting
direction assumed to be across what would be the path of the rowers (shooting
pointed away from the neighborhood houses and Treman Park of course). The
rowers froze when they saw the hunters, and subsequently the hunters packed up
their decoys and departed when they saw the rowers. Visibility was poor, but
the rowers’ bow light can be seen.

Dave, thanks for sharing your encounter with the List, because this potentially
affects anyone who intends to go birding at Stewart Park or in the nearby
areas, if this kind of activity is seasonally permitted from such a widely and
publicly used space.

Does the Cayuga Bird Club have an official position on this and other past
similar situations at the South shore of Cayuga Lake? As Laura suggested,
perhaps a letter (from the Cayuga Bird Club) to the City of Ithaca
representative(s) whose area(s) includes the disputed region, a letter to the
Mayor, and a discussion placed on the agenda during one of the City
Administration public meetings, would help clarify the City’s stance on this
issue and possibly put forth an opportunity for official change in the future?

I believe that we, as birders, are not all blatantly opposed to hunting, but I
do think there’s a time and place for that sport – Stewart Park, and the South
end of Cayuga Lake in general, does not seem like the right place at any time.

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

It is great that you followed through on all of this! It sounds like an
intimidating situation, but you did not back down. I think it would be
worthwhile to share your experience with your city representative and the
Major. I just read in the Ithaca Journal this morning that all Ithaca police
officers are now wearing and using body cameras (as of Nov. 3) which must be
turned on when they respond to a call. So there is a good official record of
what occurred (we hope).

   Good for you!

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] guns at Stewart Park

This afternoon I was enjoying Stewart Park - the Cayuga Waterfront Trail, the
Fuertes Sanctuary (swan pond), the birds on the lake - as I often do. As I
walked clockwise around the pond and came out from the Fuertes Sanctuary path
near the lakeshore and toward the park road, I came face to face with 3 guys
carrying guns and dragging a small boat. I took a couple photos on my phone
(I've been practicing lately, but they weren't very good) and I told them they
weren't allowed to have guns in Stewart Park. They said lots of law enforcement
agencies had been called on them before, which sort of contradicts what they
also said about me being the only one who has given them a problem, and they
were told it was okay if the guns weren't loaded. I said the ban was in the
City Code, and maybe those police hadn't read that part. They were skeptical.
They said they'd seen guys walk right out and shoot waterfowl from Stewart
Park. I said I would've tried to stop those guys, too. They didn't want to
leave, but seemed to think that having police, who had agreed with them before,
resolve the issue would get me out of their hair. So I called 911 and explained
the situation. The guys in camo agreed to wait for the cops, although meanwhile
they did put their guns back in their pick-up trucks. That was nice, since kids
were arriving next to them for rowing practice at the Cascadilla Boathouse,
although I think the kids were unaware of what was going on. Also I was pretty
uncomfortable confronting people with guns while
