8:15 a.m Sunday, just checking all the ominous notes and explaining the
reality to my husband, and TWO males arrived at the one visible feeder and
the battle for the goodies took but a moment!

May I say 'Whoopee!' and 'Whew?'

several pairs which would include adults and/or juveniles.

The F Common Merganser and her eight offspring cruised by this morning. The
merglings are nearly mom's size, and close to her colors as well. Very
regal!

We still have a few Rough-Winged Swallows flitting about, sometimes even
going under the dock. I looked carefully last weekend for any sign of a
nest, without result. However, since we have discovered a mother mink and
two adolescent offspring who are living IN the dock - elderly dock,
constructed of heavy, wooden siding and filled with rocks, newer steel and
wood construction 'floating' over - that would likely explain the lack of
nesting birds.

[cayugabirds-l] Nest News

2015-06-14 Thread Ellen Haith
A pair of Northern Rough-Winged Swallows is building a nest - rather, the
presumed female is building a nest - under the LOWER section of our dock.
With the past week's water influx the level of the lake is, perhaps, 15
inches below the underside of the 'roof' of her nest site, and the
continual movement of the water must make things rather dicey when entering
and exiting the premises with nesting material. In fact, she has taken in
some fairly sizable bits and has flown about the area several times before
entering with them, as if to pluck up her courage.

What will befall the offspring is something I'm leery of contemplating. Or
is this standard nesting location for these swallows? Experienced NRWS
viewers please feel free to wade in with encouraging stories.

[cayugabirds-l] Elm Beach Road, Town of Romulus

2015-05-27 Thread Ellen Haith
- First 2015 group of Mallard ducklings this morning - seven.

- On Sunday we noted a family of Canada Geese - eight goslings. This is
definitely a first in our so-far fifteen years on Elm Beach. The number of
offspring is, I believe, accurate, though the parents are so cautious that
they take the goslings far offshore when a human is spotted, and circle
diligently to keep them in safe territory.

- There were TWO pairs of adult Canadas during the past couple of weeks, so
perhaps/hopefully there will be a second family on the lake soon.

- Not birds, but winged creatures: there has been a group of 3-11 Tiger
Swallowtail butterflies 'puddling' in a damp depression along the road for
the past few days.

Seventy-four DC Cormorants just flew north offshore of Elm Beach. Perhaps a
dozen more are still cruising around the cove below Thirsty Owl's boat

This huge flock of DCC's is completely new. We usually see several random
birds during the summer, but this huge flock is a mystery. Has anyone seen
such behavior?

[cayugabirds-l] RTH - Stout Road, Seneca County

2015-05-17 Thread Ellen Haith
Contrary to a post earlier this month, it appears that the Red Tail Hawks
who nested last year near Stout Road in Seneca County haven't deserted the
area after all. This morning we were spotted by a stunning adult as we came
around a bend above the ravine. S/he took up a station in one of the
tallest trees and proceeded to cuss at us in no uncertain terms. S/he flew
to the opposite side of the tree and took up the refrain, only stopping
when we moved on and were out of sight.

With the trees in full foliage, as opposed to last year's earlier nest
sighting, it will be next to impossible to spot a nest, but I look forward
to further lectures from one or two parents.

YS Flicker on our suet in Ovid. Only other winter flicker we have seen in
20+ yrs here was a sad pile of feathers under a cedar tree found in
February 2012.

Also have now been able to see both 2 male and 2 female redpolls
simultaneously, so definitely have at least 4, am guessing between 4-8
total, but really hard to count among the shifting flock of finches
juncos. Nothing like the numbers of 2 yrs ago, regardless, and still no
siskins.

[cayugabirds-l] Another Hawk Tale

2015-01-24 Thread Ellen Haith
Shortly after noon, a juvenile Sharpie took a couple of runs through our
small back yard, doubtless trying to catch an unaware bird at or near the
feeders. No luck this time, but I'm intrigued at and delighted by the
recent raptor activity! Perhaps it's due to the loss of several outdoor
cats within the last couple of years?

We also have a resident rabbit, and last weekend the dogs surprised a
'possum scrounging under the feeders when they exited the kitchen door.
Luckily the interloper decided to do what they do best - play 'possum - and
the dogs were so unnerved that they didn't touch him/her! It was a first
for me, too, though I had decided that such a beast was responsible for the
depredation and near-destruction of the suet feeder. I think I have his/her
measure now, though, with feeders moved away from easy access.

Astonishing activity in what is truly a SMALL back yard!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles, Red-headed Woodpeckers, dowitchers

2014-07-07 Thread Ellen Haith
Re: Dave's post of last evening, we have seen a juvenile Bald Eagle along
Elm Beach Road since early May. The heavy rains washed a large tree down
one of the creeks, and s/he has been visiting that occasionally. When
finished with his-or-her check of the neighborhood, s/he heads south. We
have seen adult BE's in the trees between Elm Beach and Sheldrake, and have
assumed that the juvenile belongs to that clan.

On another note, I haven't posted about the RTH nest for some weeks. Once
the leaves came out the nest was completely hidden. However, in the last
ten days I've heard what I take to be two individual fledglings ordering up
lunch when I walk the dogs up the hill. Yesterday a solitary adult was also
calling out intermittently.

On 3 July I stopped by the Bald Eagle nest along Maplewood Rd in Ulysses
(north of Glenwood Pines Ithaca Yacht Club), and it appeared emptly. I
guess the 2 adult-sized young I saw there awhile back fledged at some
point. Has anyone else kept an eye on this nest or seen fledged young in
 the area lately?

I watched the Red-headed Woodpecker nest on South Mays Point Rd for awhile
today. Both adults were feeding a youngster who stuck its head out the
hole. But even though only one young was visible at a time, I think there
are at least 3 of them because of different markings. One had a stripe of
red just below the eyes, 1 had a very narrow line of red just below the
eyes, 1 or more had just the gray plumage of the rest of the head.

On 3 July I saw a dowitcher in Knox-Marsellus Marsh from East Rd. I
couldn't get colors on the distant bird but it looked flat-backed as it fed
(possibly indicating Short-billed). Today (6 July) I saw 2 dowitchers there
feeding near the resting gulls terns. Again the distance, lighting
shimmer prevented me getting plumage details, although one looked pinkish
below. Both appeard very fat hump-backed as they fed, with a pronounced
concavity between the back and rear end (possibly indicating Long-billed).

Yes, there was an Osprey nest there last summer, which we were able to
observe during nest season - but only in passing! I have not been that far
north on 89 as yet this spring.

Today, May 23, my dad and I went for an early morning
before-school run to Myers Point. We saw Jay McGowan's post to the list,
and were hoping to find the Laughing Gull, etc. As soon as we arrived at
Myers, we were greeted with the sight of Ann Mitchell and Dave Nutter, who
helped us spot a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER high in a tree. After taking
pretty good looks at the bird, we moved on to the spit. At the spit we
sadly did not find the Laughing Gull, which we were told had taken off to
the west at 7:41 AM, just before we arrived. However, we did hear an INDIGO
BUNTING and saw a RUDDY TURNSTONE in breeding plumage. Though these were
definitely the highlights of our trip, we also sighted a very unusual gull.
This RING-BILLED GULL had a very hooked bill which resembled the bill of a
Snail Kite. This gull was apart from all the other ring-bills, and looked
like a cross between a gull and a shrike-like form.
The Osprey was present, and flying low over the trees. Thanks to
Dave, Ann and Jay who helped us spot the very satisfying Yellow-throated
 Warbler.
After this, I was off to school, where I abruptly saw two very
red SCARLET TANAGERS. I am sure these were tanagers, not cardinals, because
the tanagers' black wings were clearly visible. Two males together, my dad
said, was probably a case of migration where males aren't so tense with
 each other.

[cayugabirds-l] Repeat Visitor

2013-02-02 Thread Ellen Haith
For the second Saturday morning in a row, I have had a Cooper's Hawk in the
back yard. Last week s/he simply did a fly-by, but this morning s/he lit in
the Blue Spruce and had a good look around. All the feeder birds had fled,
so no breakfast was had by the interloper and I got a decent look at the
predator. I've had predation in the past, but not recently.

We still have hummingbirds at our two feeders on Elm Beach Road, W side of
Cayuga Lake, and I've seen them at another feeder down the road. Curiously,
we have only females, which has been true for years. There MUST be males
out there but they seem self-sufficient.

And the hummers at the Lab , that’s as late as this a.m. at 8

Interesting following the comments on sightings and missing RT
Hummingbirds. Still have our female and juvenile here in Big Flats. No
males. Actually, we are seeing more activity than during the first half of
the summer.

I have a theory on why they sometimes seem to disappear in summer, only to
return. I think they have just found a new, better food source that may be
temporary. It comes to mind that insects are good source of protein for
them.

So, today, I observed our female RTH land on the stalk below the Monarda
didyma flower head, and pick something from under the dried flower head. I
theorize it is small spiders or similar insects. She then took flight to
draw nectar from the few remaining flowers on adjacent stalks and again
perched under a dried flower head to pick something from underneath.

[cayugabirds-l] Morning Flyers

2012-08-14 Thread Ellen Haith
When I was out with the dogs at 7 a.m., on the west side of the lake - Elm
Beach Road - there were hundreds of small birds flying south along the
lakefront, NOT in any formation but scattered so that I could see perhaps
25 at a time about 30 feet overhead. Silhouetted against the grey
cloudcover, they were not identifiable, though twice I heard the call of a
Goldfinch from overhead, but did not see the typical fly-and-coast pattern
of the Goldfinch in the majority. This went on for the half hour that we
were outside, and had probably begun some time before we were up. After
that the number petered out and that was that.

I don't recall seeing this at any time in our previous eleven years here.
Has anyone else observed this? It seems early for migration, and when we
walked to the top of the hill at 11 a.m. the usual swallows were lining the
utility wires, though the Rough-Winged Swallows who nest in the nearby
docks left several weeks ago.
