Re: [cayugabirds-l] Brown Thrasher

2022-04-22 Thread Suan Yong
Had one, maybe two, at jetty woods as well this morning for the cac activity, a
silent one seen before the Osprey platform fairway, one heard singing from the
middle of the woods.

Great looks at the cormorants' double crests as they establish nests on a
couple of trees.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] BROWN THRASHER

2021-04-05 Thread Dave Nutter
Ken,
Yours may be the first migrant Brown Thrasher this year in the Basin, but two
were found overwintering in February. The first was on Ferguson Road west of
Dryden, showing up at a feeder when a big snowstorm hit, then staying for over
a month. The second was noted by Jay McGowan on NYS-89 in Covert.

? Put big shallow pan of water (1" deep water) on floor near door. Maybe
thrasher will come to drink then fly out.

This morning at 6:30 I saw one of "my" brown thrashers in a dark place in a

[cayugabirds-l] Brown Thrasher trapped in garage

2018-06-19 Thread Melanie Uhlir
I was thrilled to see a Brown Thrasher in our yard, until one went into
the garage and didn't come out! Fledgling, maybe? There is a second,
very concerned, Brown Thrasher calling anxiously. This second bird has
some kind of larva in its mouth.

Anyone know the best way to coax a bird out of the upper part of a
garage?!?!

Anxiously awaiting advice!

[cayugabirds-l] Brown Thrasher, and an unexpected reprieve

2017-05-01 Thread Geo Kloppel
I'd been thinking there might be no Brown Thrashers nesting at my place this
year, but just this morning one took up the usual singing perches, and made
himself very noticeable.

The toad frenzy ended days ago, and the revelers have all departed from the
pond, leaving behind lots of eggs, and also a mystery: there were no corpses
this year! Usually after the toads' big pool party the grassy dike looks like a
dissection lab emptied for fire drill. But this year the Crows left the toads
in peace.

Assuming that the Crows seen on the dike at times, poking after moles or
something, are members of the same family that has exploited the hapless toads
for years, I have to think that because the pool party happened about ten days
early this year, the Crows weren't ready to make use of them.

[cayugabirds-l] Brown Thrasher

2017-04-21 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Our foy BROWN THRASHER showed up at 5:45pm. It was rooting in the layer
of mulch along our garden fence line.

For those curious about the PIGEON that had been in our yard for the
past couple of days, I finally caught the bird and took it to the Janet
Swanson (Cornell) Wildlife Rehab. Center off of Snyder Hill Rd. To the
untrained eye the bird looked healthy. However, it couldn't fly very
far, so we assumed it had a damaged wing. When examined by a
veterinarian, it turns out the bird was emaciated. When I left the
center, a rehab person was holding it in a towel and letting it munch
away on a cup of seed. It was a racing pigeon. There was no charge to
drop the bird off with them. I felt compelled to make a donation!

I walked my usual route down Burns Road today and found a Brown Thrasher
visiting a feeder at Burns Way. In talking to the homeowner he said it’s been

Blackbird. I didn’t see these other early birds, but I’ll check again this week.

[cayugabirds-l] Brown Thrasher singing SSW

2013-04-19 Thread Chris Pelkie
I think BROWN THRASHER has been reported earlier this season at Sapsucker, but
this morning at 730ish, one was perched in a 20' high shrubby tree just north
of the lawn at entrance to power line cut (that is, right across from the 2nd
parking lot), but was more easily seen from the 3rd parking lot looking South.
(I noted the tree since there are much taller ones available, but this guy
seemed happy at a lower height, maybe due to the wind gusts.) He sang quite a
repertoire, seemed to be flushed by either a bus or a loud pedestrian
(screaming into his cell phone while I was trying to record, sigh), but then
returned to the same perch and started in again. He (the thrasher, not the
pedestrian) does a lot of Robin, and they are responding, so it took me a
second to realize it was a mimid after he threw in a variety of other chortles
and impersonations.

While standing there, first a female EASTERN BLUEBIRD, then a brightly colored
M appeared, inspected me inspecting them, and seemed to be puttering between
the tree by the chain and the undergrowth next to the parking lot.

I didn't have time to check the marsh today, but yesterday spent half an hour
at this same time of morning listening to the VIRGINIA RAIL who was singing
almost constantly from the same place as we heard him earlier this week. Again,
I heard no response from another rail.

[cayugabirds-l] Brown Thrasher- Richford

2010-04-06 Thread David McCartt
Hi All,

I don't recall seeing BROWN THRASHER mentioned yet this year so I thought I'd
share my sighting from this morning.  So nice to see and hear this chatterbox
again!

Also, since last Friday afternoon we've had the following birds show up at our
place:

YB Sapsucker
Northern Flicker
Tree Swallow
Eastern Phoebe
Golden-crowned Kinglet
Chipping Sparrow

Good Birding,
David Mccartt
Tubbs Hill Rd.
Richford
