Any photos yet? There have been up to a dozen Horned Grebes, many in
confusing transitional plumage, around the south end of Cayuga Lake the

[cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe on my pond...

2019-04-15 Thread Gladys Birdsall
This afternoon about 5:30 p.m., I walked the Yorkies, and we went down
to the pond.  As we got there I saw a small bird on the water on the
other side.  We all stopped to look and what jumped out at me was the
yellowish ( in fan shape) feathers on the side of the head, and my first
thought was Eared Grebe.  The bird sat still looking at us and us at
it.  I did not have my binocs, and I just kept looking at the head, (
yes it looks fan shaped).  The bird was very dark overall.  I do not
remember seeing color on the body.   Maybe 5 seconds passed and it flew
off.  It did have white patches on the wings.  Looking in the Sibley
book, the white patches on the upper wing match what I saw.
(Secondaries, the trailing edge of the wing)

When the bird took off the yellowish feathers on the side of the head
appeared to lay in a line across the side of the head.  I could not find
online any photos of Eared Grebes in flight,( in breeding plumage).

We have seen tadpoles in our pond already this year so it may have had a
meal.  It just took me by surprise, but the yellowish feathers on the
side of the head really was the thing that jumped out at me.

I have seen breeding plumage Horned Grebes on Cayuga Lake. This
encounter happened pretty fast.  I have had Wood Ducks on the pond and
they take off as soon as they hear us coming, doing their high pitched
whistle.

Gladys

[cayugabirds-l] Eared grebe at Portland point

2014-02-02 Thread Brad Walker
Hi all, the EARED GREBE is currently close to the shore near the end of the
rail lines at Portland Point.

There are also several horned grebes nearby for a nice comparison.

[cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe, Myers Point

2014-01-30 Thread Jay McGowan
Bob McGuire just called to say he has an EARED GREBE off Ladoga at Myers
Point. I was there earlier this morning and didn't see this bird, but I did
have a basic adult RED-NECKED GREBE, reported yesterday by David Weber and
others, off the Myers marina this morning, as well as good waterfowl
diversity here and north of Salt Point.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe, Myers Point

2014-01-30 Thread Susan Fast
I was there and saw the eared.  Also found 2 RED-NECKED GREBES after Bob left.
To me, the eared didn't look like the one at Aurora, so we met there later and
found only HORNED GREBES off the Boathouse.  After a fine lunch at Dories, I
headed down to Long Point SP and found the Aurora EARED GREBE there, all by
itself.  The facial markings are somewhat different in the 2 eared grebes.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] EARED GREBE, SW Cayuga Lake scoped from NW Treman ...

2013-12-20 Thread Dave Nutter
My walk to the lake garnered 48 species, including 15 HORNED GREBES (scattered far out on the lake as well as closer to ducks, 3 PIED-BILLED GREBES (near the docks and the distant EARED GREBE when I left), and 1 COMMON LOON. The next biggest surprise among the 16 species of waterfowl was a total of 83 SWANS between the white lighthouse jetty and Stewart Park, feeding and resting along the ice edge, and 80 of which were confirmed TUNDRAS. Only 3 of the swans raised ID questions, one which persistently hid its head, and 2 at the far SE corner of the lake whose wider eye-bill wedge I attributed to the mild heat shimmer, but worth a double-check from closer. Perhaps today's south winds will also make for good viewing. --Dave NutterOn Dec 19, 2013, at 01:12 PM, 6072292...@vtext.com wrote:EARED GREBE, SW Cayuga Lake scoped from NW Treman lakeshore. --Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe, yes. Tufted Duck, no.

2013-01-31 Thread nutter.dave
I spent about an hour and a half at the southwest corner of Cayuga Lake this morning. The west side is sheltered, and now that the temperature has dropped again, and the wind is not from the land to the south, there was almost no heat distortion over the water. There were waves in the middle and east sides of the lake, and much of the south end is muddy from the rains and wind, but I think I did a pretty good job seeing what was out there (Then again, I thought the same when I left on Tuesday minutes before the alert about the Tufted Duck.). There were plenty of waterfowl, but perhaps not as many as the past couple days. One individual in particular, the obscure little Tufted Duck, seemed to be missing. Birds of note:Canada X domestic Greylag Goose hybrid - 1 with broad white band on sides (this is feathered, I was in error previously)Northern Pintail - 1 maleRedhead - 92 in a tight flock close by when I arrived. [cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe, Aurora

2013-01-26 Thread Jay McGowan
Andrew Van Norstrand and I are looking at a winter EARED GREBE with two
Horned Grebes out on Aurora Bay, seen from the Lake Road bluffs. Several
other groups of Horned Grebes are also in the area, but the Eared is
notably smaller and skinnier-necked with a dark neck and peaked head, quite
distinctive in the nice light and calm conditions we have right now.

A Killdeer on Salt Point was the highlight at Myers.

[cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe still present, but distant

2011-12-09 Thread Nicholas Sly
I scoped from the East end of Stewart Park for Tim's Eared Grebe from
11:15 to 11:45. The grebe was distant to the west: from my vantage
point it was between the red lighthouse and the large, tall marker
farther out on the lake. Over the course of the half hour it pushed
farther and farther northwest, until it was just a speck near the far
shore. If anyone is going for it now, maybe Hogs Hole would be a
better scoping spot. Hopefully it loops back in close.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe at Stewart Park - No sign

2010-09-23 Thread Paul Anderson

There was no sign of the Eared Grebe this morning from Stewart Park.

Among the other birds were two Northern Shovelers, about ten
Green-winged Teal, a single Wigeon, and of course the other usual suspects.

An adult Bald Eagle flew in from the North and perched in the tree
opposite the boat house. It had a red band on the left foot labeled P31
and a white one on the right.

[cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe at Stewart Park

2010-09-22 Thread Tim Lenz
This evening there was a basic plumaged EARED GREBE swimming out near the
red lighthouse jetty visible from Stewart Park. The most noticeable thing
about the bird was its very steep forehead and distinctly triangular head
shape, with the peak just above and perhaps slightly in front of the eye.
The black on the crown extended downwards below and behind the eye,
wrapping around diffusely to the back of the neck. Its back and flanks were
black, with little contrast. The bill seemed rather short and thin, but it
was bit too far away to notice any other details. It was swimming near a
Pied-billed Grebe at one point but later drifted away on its own towards the
pilings. I was able to take some video using my phone through the scope,
which I will post to my flickr page tomorrow if it reveals anything useful.
Hopefully the bird will stick around overnight. This was my first Eared
Grebe for Tompkins County so I imagine it would be a new county bird for
many others as well.

Good birding

[cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe in Aurora

2010-01-17 Thread alm9413
Around 2:45 P.M., I spotted an Eared Grebe from the north side of the
boathouse in Aurora. It was somewhere around 1/3rd the way out in the lake. I
first noticed 5 Horned Grebes further north and further out on the lake. As
I scanned, the Eared Grebe came into view. It was much closer to shore, but
I still needed to zoom in on it. It was actively feeding, heading south.
The dark head and shape of the forehead, white ear patch, and dusky neck
were easily identified.
