Tonight I began listening to a Mockingbird while I had Merlin on. As the
bird went through its repertoire, merlin told me I was listening to a
Mockingbird, a Mallard and a kestrel. I had to leave, but it was a fun and
informative exercise and worth trying again again when I have more time.

[cayugabirds-l] mockingbird dance

2023-03-18 Thread Deb Grantham
I just watched a pair of Northern mockingbirds go through their mating
dance/ritual including the aerial part and then end up on the ground where they
mated.

Quite a few bluebirds right around my house in the last week and finally robins
near my house, too. I've seen plenty of both in the last few weeks but near my
house.

Here they are rummaging around in my juniper bushes. There are a very few
berries left but also good nesting opportunities. It’s always interesting to
see who wins the territorial competition: mockingbirds, doves, or others.

[cayugabirds-l] Mockingbird constantly vocalizing

2020-10-23 Thread Marty Schlabach
We have a pair or two of mockingbirds at our place, pretty much year round. I
find it curious that we have one vocalizing pretty steadily all day long. Any
explanation for such persistent vocalizing this time of the year?

And, I'd appreciate it if some of you would send some siskins and evening
grosbeaks our way. We still don't have any at our feeders.

Thanks,

[cayugabirds-l] Mockingbird

2019-12-06 Thread Carol Keeler
The mockingbird surprised me with a visit again. It was here eating
Winterberries. I’m glad I have 5 bushes covered with them. There could be an
interesting war over the berries this summer. I’ve had robins and bluebirds
fighting over them before. Many years ago I had a pair of mockers nesting in
my yard. They considered the crabapple tree theirs and drove off all other
birds. I have only a few crabapples left on the big tree but the new tree out
front is covered. I’d love the mocker to stay! I got pictures of it this time.

As for other birds, I do have several Tree Sparrows and lots of Juncos.
Otherwise it’s the regulars.

The other day I was invited to “teach” my niece’s daycare class about birds.
What fun. I brought lots of my bird photos to share. I’d love to inspire a
new generation of birders. I’m giving my 4 year old niece kids binoculars,
bird ID books, and feeders for Christmas. Here’s hoping. Get them while
they’re young.

[cayugabirds-l] Mockingbird

2019-11-12 Thread Carol Keeler
For me it was an exciting morning. I spotted a red fox out back so I headed to
the sunroom to see if I could watch him. He ended up hunting for rodents
around my feeder. While out there I looked to see what birds were there. It
was about 6:45. I get the most birds early. Anyway, a Mockingbird landed on a
metal decoration in the garden. Very exciting. I haven’t had a Mocker around
here in many years. They used to nest in my yard, but then we had a horrible
winter with extreme cold, and I never saw one here again. They used to defend
the crabapple tree against any bird that would go in the tree. I’m hoping it
may stay around. I have lots of winter fruits with crabapples and
winterberries.

[cayugabirds-l] Mockingbird mocking

2017-03-19 Thread Alicia Plotkin
We went to Sampson State Park again today where we heard a mockingbird
singing a full repertoire of songs from apparently across the large
field judging by the quality of the sound and the volume. Except then I
saw the bird, only about 50' away - he was singing in a full but very
quiet voice, running through a couple of dozen songs with the same
dexterity that he will showing regularly in a few weeks, except somehow
dialing the volume way down while not changing the quality of the
sound. Perhaps warming up for the first day of spring tomorrow?

Cardinals, titmice, chickadees, robins & mourning doves also singing in
the warmth of the full sun, but they weren't holding back.

[cayugabirds-l] mockingbird, others

2015-02-11 Thread Bill Mcaneny
This afternoon I went to the cornfields on Cayuga View Rd, TBurg to
photograph the hundreds of crows. In a small tree next to the road there was
a MOCKINGBIRD, the first I have seen this winter. (Well, maybe the second.).
Further south on the road were 4 HORNED LARKS. But the crows were the main
show, swarming on the road and filling the treetops. There is still corn
standing unharvested and many of the crows were perched on top of the
stalks. They were not obvious about their eating, but one of the group that
had been in my trees a few days ago had pulled apart a squirrel nest, with
no meal apparent.

Good question. I have a Mockingbird who serenades me quite often and he sings
many other birds songs. He's fooled me in early spring when I thought I had a

hear an answer to Richard's question as well. My guess is that his song is all
mimic.

[cayugabirds-l] Mockingbird, Renwick Woods, Mt. Pleasant, Jim Schug Trail, Dryden Lake, and George Rd. Pond

2011-04-17 Thread Evan Barrientos
Hi everyone,
Here are my e-bird lists from some birding Friday morning. Highlights included
a Northern Mockingbird singing at East Hill Plaza, two GREAT HORNED OWLS in
Renwick Woods, a pair of American Kestrels copulating at the north end of the
Jim Schug Trail, and six Bonaparte's Gulls and two HORNED GREBES on George Rd.
Pond. Also we saw some very interesting Mallard behavior at Stewart Park in
which one male attempted to mount a female in the water while another male
attacked him several times. In the end, the female broke away, and the THE TWO
MALES ASSUMED A COPULATION POSITION. Overall a very productive morning.
