[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys Everywhere All at Once!

2023-03-28 Thread tess
Including one back beside the nest that is atop the cellphone tower
south of Covert ~ 4:45pm today.  For the first time in three years the
nest had not been removed from the tower, so it was there to welcome the
osprey back to its summer home.  An hour earlier presumably the same
bird was perched on a phone pole 1/4 mile away, picking at a fish in its
talons.

[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys on eggs

2022-04-22 Thread Candace E. Cornell
As of this week, most of Cayuga's Ospreys are sitting on eggs
and may be harder to see as they incubate deep in their nests.
Please give them space at this sensitive time and stay 100-300'
away from their nests. If the birds cry out or fly off the nest, you
are too close. Enjoy watching the Ospreys trade incubating duties
for the next five weeks. Many thanks!

[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys & a c. loon & tree swallow 4/9/22

2022-04-09 Thread job121830
Daughter, Becky Sewell, & I made the rounds checking osprey nests at the north
end of Cayuga Lake this afternoon. Found 2 new nests near NY Chiropractor
College south of Seneca Falls. In the canal channel in Cayuga we discovered
that the old iron tower north of the RR bridge now has a new tall extension
with a new platform that has sides on it to keep wind from blowing the nest
off. It was obviously "seeded" with "invitational" sticks on top. Whoopee ...
it had a pr. of Os on it.
We saw at least 4 platforms that had no "seeding" branches put on the platforms
so those more than likely will never attract ospreys.
I don't have Becky's count of platforms or the number of Os seen but it was FAR
more than the original 17 nests I saw when I decided to count nests between
home & MNWR some 14 yrs. or so ago & triggered Candace Cornell's interest. .

At Long Point a common loon was in the boat launching area & surfaced a few
seconds after I pulled up to the ramp so we had wonderful closeup views before
a boat came from the lake. The loon apparently stayed submerged, swam under the
boat & popped up just out in the lake...

Here at home in Union Springs I was delighted to see a tree swallow
investigating our box on the west end of the clothesline arm. House sparrows
have the one on the east end while blue birds are in the box at the south end
of the clothesline.

[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys all around

2021-04-08 Thread Candace E. Cornell
Fellow Birders:

Many of our 150 +/- breeding Osprey pairs in the Cayuga Lake Basin have
returned home and have begun their nesting season. If you are interested in
following one pair, Ophelia and Orpheus, read on. After separate winters in
the South American tropics, these Lansing residents reunited on March 28,
2021, at their nest in the Salt Point Natural Area. This is their ninth
year gracing us with their company and raising a family on the shores of
Lake Cayuga. Ophelia and Orpheus are now busily courting and refurbishing
the nest in preparation for their new family to come.

I’ll be once again sharing glimpses of Ophelia’s and Orpheus’ lives and
that of other Ospreys in both print and video on the links below. Please
join me to witness the miracle of nature and follow the drama of raising a
brood of these magnificent birds. Thank you!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Ospreys back at Myer's Hill nest

2021-03-30 Thread Candace E. Cornell
All's right with the world once the Ospreys return . . . and now they are
back.

As of this morning, many of the breeding Ospreys in the Ithaca and Lansing
area have returned to their nests. I can't be sure if these are the same
birds as last year, but their behavior indicates they are. A few of the
nesters along Rt 90 have reclaimed their nests and the others are surely on
their way! No Ospreys nesting along Rt 89 yet. From a limited time of
observation, it appears that the new disks on 5&20 are attracting limited
Ospreys, but none have been claimed. The male that was nesting on the
oldest 5&20 nest has not returned since his nest was removed and replaced
with a disk. By next week hopefully most nests in the basin will be filled
and we should be able to ascertain if all the mates made it safely home.

Be on the lookout for the Ospreys high in the air sky dancing, as they woo
their mates with sticks or fish in their talons. It's fascinating to watch
the Ospreys do fly-bys, breaking off sticks from the bare treetops to place
in their nests. It can be quite comical if the stick does not give way.

Eyes to the sky!

[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys

2020-04-15 Thread Marty Schlabach
Mary Jean and I checked out the Osprey nests on Foots Corners Rd (#58) and
Morgan Rd (#57) near Interlaken, in the town of Ovid about mid-day today.

The Foots Corners Rd nest had one osprey perched on the nest. We chatted
briefly with a neighbor and he indicated that two birds have been frequenting
the nest.

We saw one osprey on the Morgan Rd nest. It seemed quite hunkered down, but
also seemed to be rearranging nesting material.

We also saw a half dozen loons along the lake in the Sheldrake & Kidders
Landing areas, as well as plenty of buffleheads and common mergansers.

[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys

2020-04-01 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Daughter, Becky Sewell, has been out checking osprey nests at the north
end of Cayuga Lake from Aurora to MNWR &  on surrounding roads there &
in Union Springs areas. As of Tues. she had found at least 21 ospreys &
was told about 2 more Wed. 3/1 just south of Union Springs.

Her FOY O was at the Union Springs water dept. nest across from the high
school on Sun., 29 Mar. & she finished that day with 13 Os. That was the
first day she has been able to go out. She really has a long, complex
route she follows to check on nests & didn't get to all of them on Sun..

On Mon, 3/20, I had 2 juvenile bald eagles flying  here over Union
Springs Academy & 23 TVs just a bit WSW before heading down towards the
village to wherever their roost is. Someday I MIGHT find where the TVs
roost.

Fritzie, Union Springs.

Thurs. afternoon 3/28/19, Becky Sewell & I birded Rte. 90 from Union
Springs to 5 & 20, and 89 north to 31 (Mucklands where, for 35 min. we
watched thousands of snow geese flying overhead towards Cayuga Lake). On
the muck, are still many pintails & mallards. Coming back down 90 from
Montezuma we went onto Laraway Rd. back to 5 & 20 to check the 4osprey
nests but in all our travels, saw only one osprey at Harris Park in
Cayuga.

Thurs. night & Fri. a.m. we had strong winds from the south. S

Friday, 3/29, traveling with  non-birders, I left Union Springs just
after noon heading north on 90. *Bingo! *Two ospreys on the water tower
nests across from US high school, one on 326/90 nest, again on 90, one
at Connors Rd. & 2 on the nests north of the RR tracks south of Cayuga.

On 5 & 20 the first nest had one bird & another sat in a nearby tree. I
suspect I would have found more had I been traveling alone or with Becky.

Occupied bald eagle nest in Union Springs area was confirmed on Sat.
3/30/19.

Here at home I have observed crows building in a spruce tree behind our
house & next to our garden.

38 deg., brisk wind from the west with an occasional snowflake
fluttering down, mixed with misty rain.

I was at Meyers Point this morning where I saw, and photographed, an Osprey
carrying nesting material to a platform and later got a photo of an Osprey on
the platform. I included the photos in my eBird checklist. To me, it seemed a
bit “skitty”, not of me or the other people there, but perhaps due to the loud
noises being made by the dump trucks constantly going in and out as they work
on the dredged material near the nest.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Ospreys are still rare. Here’s what might be mistaken
for one

Over the past several days there have been several reports of Ospreys.

Candace Cornell, who has observed and compiled reports of the Ospreys nesting
around Cayuga Lake during their expansion for several years, notes that this
arrival is an unprecedented couple weeks early, not just for the species, but
for the individual birds believed to be returning to Myers Point. In order to
figure out what is happening and why (Is climate change a factor?), it’s
essential to have good information.

In winter, reports of Ospreys in Upstate NY are presumed to be erroneous
observations of immature Bald Eagles unless there’s good evidence for the
Osprey ID. Not all birders are aware that one stage of young Bald Eagles’
plumage includes a white belly and a dark mask on a whitish head on a generally
brown large raptor. Today I photographed such a Bald Eagle at Stewart Park,
where some Osprey reports have been made. My description of the bird is below
in the excerpt of my eBird report. There are 2 rather bad photos taken
awkwardly through my binoculars also included in the eBird report, which I hope
readers can access via the link.

A plea:
When submitting any eBird report which includes a species which eBird says is
rare, PLEASE include in the requested “details” a description of the bird
discussing what you observed - field marks such as shape, pattern, color,
behavior, sound, anything you noticed about it that helped you ID the bird (or
that made ID difficult or any missing field marks), and why you think it was
that species and not anything else or something more common. If you can take a
photo, even a crappy one, do so, and include it. This makes all the difference
between reports that can be useful to others and reports that must be chucked
for lack of evidence. Even a well-documented misidentification can be
educational to oneself and others and maybe it can help future instructors or
MERLIN.

I think Osprey will be removed from the rare category for Tompkins County on
March 27, unless eBird staff get tired of all the reports and switch the
settings.

As far as I know (and I have not checked this evening), NO ONE has included a
photo of a local Osprey in an eBird report yet, and I think I am the only
person who made an effort to describe what they thought was and what was not an
Osprey. Everyone else’s reports are going to be confirmed or not by eBird
solely on the reputation of the observers, not the observations, and that makes
me uncomfortable.

That’s my rant for the day, since there is no SFO course in which to say stuff
like this. Thanks for humoring me by at least reading this far.

25 species (+1 other taxa)

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) 1 Immature perched in treetop on
Jetty Woods: very large vertical raptor; generally brown above; mostly white
belly & neck; blotchy brown breast; dark mask on dirty whitish head; when it
flew it showed wing linings largely white; very broad wings; very large hooked
bill; large head; rather wide body. Challenging photos through binoculars,
rather backlit, and showing the head less well than I hoped. Photo session cut
short by model flying away. A birder walking by asked if the bird was an
Osprey, as did a person I showed a photo. I hope the photos can be educational.

[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys on Owasco and possibly Seneca Lakes

2018-04-24 Thread Candace Cornell
Ospreys have been seen regularly on Lake Owasco for the last two years (I
saw one just yesterday) and I am trying to find the nests. There have also
been a few sitings on Seneca Lake, but the only nests I can find there are
the defunct ones at the Greenidge Power facility in Dresden.

With the help of several friends and fellow birders, I am surveying the
osprey population in the Finger Lakes and depend on area birders for their
help. If you live or travel around Seneca, Owasco, and Skaneateles lakes
and see an osprey, *PLEASE* email me the approximate location ASAP. If you
see one fishing, please let me know the direction it flew with the
fish—chances are it's going back to its nest.

Thank you very much for your help! Good Birding!

Eyes to the sky!
Candace

[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys harassed

2018-04-21 Thread Linda Orkin
Hey all.

My daughter Jessica was at the dog park early this morning. She watched a man
and his dog go right up to the base of the osprey nest and was pointing his
camera straight up at them. They were quite agitated and left the nest and then
returned vocalizing in distress. Jess was trying to yell at him from a
distance. I won’t repeat what she said.

I don’t know how people can be prevented from this. Just wanted to alert you
all.

Thanks.

[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys at Footes Corners nest

2018-04-13 Thread Marty Schlabach
Today about 9:30am we drove by and saw two ospreys in the area of the Footes
Corners osprey platform. One made several trips to the platform carrying
nesting material. Footes Corners Road is just north of the village of
Interlaken. It goes straight ahead, when rt 96 veers left.

Plastic saucers called nesting dishes are used extensively by utility companies
throughout Florida to attract ospreys and eagles. Now, the National Grid is
using them in Central NY. Unfortunately, the installers of the new nest dish
off Rt. 89 at the Oak Orchard Campground does not appear to be seeded. It will
be a hard beginning to the mating season to have to rebuild your nest from

I don't care for these nesting dishes for several reasons. I don't think the
dishes have enough drainage holes for severe rains storms. They also do not
provide a perch from which the adults keep guard of the nest. With no real
sides, these dishes do not prevent nest from blowing off the platform.Eyes

[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys, wren

2017-03-30 Thread Dave Nutter
Following up on an Osprey report from Stewart Park today I bike there on the
Cayuga Waterfront Trail. On my way, looking across Cayuga Inlet towards Union
Fields in Cass Park, I saw that the nest platform atop one of the light poles
had a new profile: an Osprey was standing in the middle of the nest.

As I neared the end of Pier Road and was about to cross the suspension bridges
to Renwick Wildwood and Stewart Park, I saw a large bird flying away northwest
at tree top height. It was another Osprey who broke a branch off a tree,
turned, flew to the platform not far from me, and added it to the pile of
sticks. I'm not sure it can be called a nest yet because I think the previous
sticks were put there by people as a starter. I don't recall that nest being
used by Ospreys before.

In other nesting news, this morning on Ithaca's West Hill I saw a Carolina Wren
carrying a green strand of what looked like moss. I assume its nest is ready
for a lining.

[cayugabirds-l] ospreys

2014-03-27 Thread Bill Mcaneny
Hi All.

Just another thought, if I may. There was a time in my lifetime (OK, so it
was a long time ago) that there was a large osprey colony on Gardiner's
Island on Long Island. They nested ON THE GROUND. No need for platforms.
Then came the first invasion of Herring Gulls. The unfortunate result was
pretty predictable. The gulls destroyed nests, eggs, and chicks. Give the
ospreys credit; they invented pole nests. Then the power company tired of
putting out fires, so they planted a few old telephone poles and bolted
platforms on them. The ospreys were grateful, and remain so today.

2013-04-28 Thread Candace Cornell
Robyn Bailey, who helped put the platform up, is working with Steve on
locating alternate sites for the fireworks. The CBC's Conservation Action
Committee is supporting Robyn in her work and will help her in any way we
can.

his attempts at procuring sticks fail and when he does get one, it can be
anywhere from a twig to a branch a few feet long. He is the one I see
maneuvering the sticks around although I did see the female move a few.

The female spends the majority of her time guarding the nest and
periodically calling. For the last three days, I have seen the male bring
small fish to the nest. When he does, he'll fly around the area with the
fish, calling, and making a grand show of the presentation. All three fish
appeared to be small sunfish spp. Both osprey fish are their own as well.

On Thursday, a second male tried to mate with the female. but was rebuffed
by her and chased by the male. the pair remained agitated for at least an
hour afterwards and did not leave the nest.

It is wonderful to watch the pair solidify their bond and work on the
nest. In the time I have spent there, I have not seen them react to the
various cars that drive past the platform although the male did leave when
two motorcycles slowly drove by the other day. The train whistle, however,
does get their attention every time it sounds.

I hope the Lansing fireworks can be relocated at a far enough distance
that the noise will not disturb the pair. At a minimum, they need to be
moved on the other side of Salmon Creek.

Lots of Osprey activity at the new nest platform on Salt Point. Yesterday
there were 4 birds in the area, lots of intense chases. This is clearly very

attempts at mating: unsuccessful because the female was sitting facing
downwind and the male of course approached facing upwind. The male also
brought one 2' long stick to the box while I was there. I read that Ospreys
head to S. America at the end of their first summer and stay there until
three years old, when they return north for the first time. Do I remember
correctly that the Portland Point pair first nested three years ago? Could
be that one of these are of those chicks, back for a first breeding attempt?

Also, I have been asked to post that there is a Salt Point cleanup scheduled
for 2-4 pm this Saturday (rain date same time Sunday, but the forecast looks
good for Sat.). There will also be a delivery of a number of trees that will
need planting. Bring work gloves, help clean up, plant trees, and watch the
 Ospreys too!

[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys (re)claim Portland Point nest, Lansing

2010-04-09 Thread Dave Nutter
This morning I saw a pair of OSPREYS atop the nest on the power pole
inside the mining compound visible from Portland Point Road, Lansing.
The birds were copulating, then the male went to the ground and brought
back a stick to add to the nest. This nest was fully made when I first saw
it this winter, well before Ospreys returned, and I suspect it was built and
probably used by Ospreys last year, but the question is: Did anybody notice
the nest or birds at it during the 2009 nesting season? If successful it would
be the first success in Tompkins County in my limited memory and knowledge.
