[cayugabirds-l] Pine Siskins!

A flock of about 20 Pine Siskins arrived in my Ringwood Rd backyard just now. 
Currently all over the feeders and on the ground underneath. I'd been hearing 
them in the neighborhood but this is the first I've seen them too.

This is pure speculation - but we had a flock of 40 +/- PISK on January 1st 
(Christmas count) foraging on white pine cones in the small grove at the corner 
of Hanshaw and Etna Roads. Same flock???

I have yet to see Pine Siskins at my feeders, although I can’t swear they 
aren’t among the birds who empty them daily when I’m not looking, and I’m 
impressed by how well the winter-plumaged Goldfinches blend in with the dead 
Goldenrod. 

So I followed up on yesterday’s eBird report (below) by Caleb Centanni at 
Comstock Knoll, east of Beebe Lake on Cornell Campus. Although the Pine Siskins 
were not evident in the particular tree which Caleb described, I saw about the 
same number as he did feeding on cones in the tops of other tall White Pines 
immediately to the west of the Nevin Welcome Center and elsewhere around the 
short paved loop of former road. This is the first time I have actually 
associated this species with Pines. Previously I had thought they deserved a 
name change. 

If you want to get closer to their elevation you can climb a few stairs on 
gravel paths to the summit of Comstock Knoll. For better lighting in case it’s 
sunny you may be able to scope them from the paid parking lot near the west end 
of Arboretum Rd. I walked in from the free parking lot for the Wildflower

We're swamped with Pine Siskins here in the Belle Sherman area in Ithaca. We 
had two about a week ago, and the number has grown since. At least 15 clustered 
at the base of our seed feeder yesterday and this morning, while another 6 eat 
at the perches. They are nearly impossible to count while on the ground. They 
pack so tightly together while feeding it looks a bit like a rugby scrum.

Almost a dozen pine siskins finally visited our feeders on Vine St in Ithaca 
today.  We have also had 2-3 fox sparrows scratching on the ground for the past

and yesterday two landed on our feeder while at least one more was in a nearby

Over a dozen pine siskins noisily greeted me as I left for work this 
morning, zreeping from several different trees.  That's the largest 
number we've ever had, and the first ones we've seen or heard since May

I just took a closer look at who is here feeding and voila:   Pine Siskin 
amidst the feeding flurry. Also Brown Creeper at suet again.

And a hawk must be in the neighborhood; every bird has disappeared.

heard a Pine Siskin clearly but was unable to find it.

After not having any for a few weeks, today I just saw at least 7 PINE SISKINS 
at my feeders with all the A. GOLDFINCHES.
Also, am enjoying hearing and seeing WHITE THROATED SPARROWS one ground food 
and in woods nearby.
Still seeing and hearing C. LOONS on Cayuga Lake.

Lately I've only got two Pine Siskins, but some 20 Purple Finches, plus plenty 
of Goldfinches. Probably at least 6 Fox Sparrows... hard to get a count on them 
because the ground is reappearing and they've gone back to singing from deep in 
the thickets.

Our niger sock saw several Pine Siskins this weekend, where the goldfinches
have been regular partakers. I wouldn't have noticed had one not sat facing
me on the  deck railing and its streaky breast caught my eye.

And the wife says she saw a small bird with a red crest, and some Cedar
Waxwings. Not having seen a RC Kinglet at a feeder before I am not sure
what transpired for her.

Our neighborhood Ravens are talking a lot!

along with 2 C. GRACKLES, 2 B.C. CHICKADEES, 2 HOUSE FINCHES (female), 2 SONG 
SPARROWS (pair?), 2 WHITE BREASTED NUTHATCHES, 2 BLUE JAYS, 2 BROWN HEADED 
COWBIRDS,

 many RED WINGED BLACKBIRDS, including 3-4 females, many GOLDFINCHES  
CARDINALS, as well as DOWNY, HAIRY,  RED BELLIED WOODPECKERS . 5 A. CROWS.
Also, a RED TAILED HAWK swooped thru the yard.
Not much visible on Cayuga Lake from house right now.

I am not sure which part of EIRW you were running Linda. Between Honness and 
Mitchell street there were at least 20 Song sparrows and many singing in the 
morning when I walked. There are also about 4 male Carolina wrens in the 
stretch too. Two of them were singing cheery songs.

Running on East Hill Rec way this morning there were many, many Song
Sparrows and Robins singing in the lifting darkness.  And 3 or 4 Woodcocks
peenting to the north in the field near the Raptor Barn.

Hello all,

Pine Siskins have indeed bred in numbers this year at many large
conifer-dominated state forests. While 
out doing crossbill surveys the past few months I've observed them almost
every time at nearly every 
location (Summerhill and Bear Swamp; Madison, Onondaga, and Chenango
Counties location I go to) since 
Novemberand there are still birds heard (at least as of May) at many
state forests in CNY. They have bred 
in numbers at Summerhill State Forest and areas like it in 2001, 2004, 2009
(less so), and 2012. When I 
lived in Madison County in 2004 I had flocks of 20-30 through at least mid
Julymany of them were 
juvies that we had banded.

[cayugabirds-l] Pine Siskins and other yard birds

Shannon and I had six siskins (try saying that 10 times fast) at our
feeders this AM joining with the resident Goldfinch flock.  

Also our first of year Y-B Sapsucker started clanging on the metal roof of
the barn 2 days ago and I heard the first Field Sparrow here this morning.
 The Sapsuckers nested about 30 ft off the deck last year. They were quite
entertaining,  more or less ignoring our presence on the deck and going
about their business w/o much apparent concern.  Hopefully the will find a
similar spot to their liking this year.

Yesterday, Susie  I  encountered 2 PINE SISKINS in Hammond Hill SF.  These
were the first we have seen all winter.  Today, we found 3 more along Burns
Rd. in Brooktondale.  I suspect they are coming back from wherever they went
earlier to the south.  Also found our first EARTHWORM of the season on the
roadside.

A quick check of this map shows that it's not unusual for Pine Siskins reports 
in our area in early to mid October and it's also not unusual for single 
individuals to be reported.


What a great eBird tool--much better than digging through old Cayugabirds 
messages!

Hi everyone,
 
   On my way in to work this morning, I was surprised to see a single PINE 
SISKIN sitting atop one of the snags on the west end of the main pond in 
Sapsucker Woods…surprised for two reasons:
(1)    It seemed rather early for siskins to appear, although there was a 
little burst of eBird records in mid-September with none between then and now, 
and 
(2)    In my experience “siskins” is almost invariably plural…like potato chips.
I was puzzled as to how a single Pine Siskin could end up so early and so 
alone…and apparently with no other reports in the immediate area and date 
range.  I think I know what happened now, thanks to Dave Bonter pointing out 
today’s blog entry from Braddock Bay: roughly 350 Pine Siskins hit the nets in 
Braddock Bay yesterday without any warning of a lead-up trickle over the 
previous days.  So, it appears that there was a big movement of siskins into 
this general region, and I presume that the lone bird that I saw was either 
navigationally or socially challenged and overshot the main movement.

I'm glad Wes beat me to the punch, but this morning  I had at least two PINE 
SISKINS flying over my house calling -- I heard them several times and had the 
impression they were local birds moving about rather than multiples migrating 
overhead, but could have been wrong. So, at least there were several in the 
neighborhood today.

We had two or three Pine Siskins, 1 female Purple Finch, dozens of 
Goldfinches, pair of Carolina Wrens, RB Nuthatch, WB Nuthatch, RB 
Woodpecker, Hairy, Downy, WT Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Blue Jay, 
Cardinal, House Finches ,Am. Robin, etc. at or under our feeders this 
morning. A pair of Pileatred Woodpeckers searched the adjacent wood lot.


There were E. Meadowlarks, Bobolinks and Savannah Sparrows in the 
fields  north of Lake R. of Rt 90  and west of the King Ferry Winery on 
Sunday morning May 1st. I looked and listened for Grasshopper Sparrows 
in the same area but the outcome was negative for this species. I saw 
one Norther Harrier in the distance but it did not work the fields 
mentioned.

[cayugabirds-l] Pine Siskins, Purple finches

A handful of Pine Siskins  Purple Finches continue at our feeders. 
Aggressive House Finches drive away the Purple Finches when they flock in.
Early this morning when I went to get the newspaper, a Pileated 
Woodpecker took off with a huge sound of flapping wings, from the base 
of a spruce across the road. This seems a favorite spot which it 
explores every year.

After having been gone on vacation for a period of time, and reading 
that Pine Siskins had returned to Ithaca, we are glad that we had our 
neighbor fill up our bird feeders while we were gone.  The Siskins (3) 
were here in their glory this morning as we looked out the window at our 
feeder (off Mitchell St).  There was also a pair of Purple Finches.
