[cayugabirds-l] Hooded warbler

2019-08-27 Thread Sheila Ann Dean
When the sun just came out, suddenly there were so many birds. This warbler
landed on the window sill while I was washing dishes! I thought I'd heard
them here, but had never seen any. Maybe not again till next winter?

[cayugabirds-l] Hooded Warbler south end of Yellow Barn Rd

2017-05-12 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
Finally, a warbler! I had a beautiful male HOODED WARBLER on the south end of
Yellow Barn Rd on my way home this evening. It was singing across the road from
the shooting range at the sportsman's club.

We just finished the 6th (of 7) week of warbler ID webinars last night, and I
still haven't seen more than two warblers together in one spot. What an odd
spring.

[cayugabirds-l] Hooded Warbler

2015-05-27 Thread Donna Scott
West of Lansing Station Rd. , Lansing, In wooded area by creek just south of
#457.
Heard clearly finally got a couple good, quick looks at the male bird.

It was funny, a Gray Catbird was nearby imitating the Hooded Warbler, altho it
wasn't the best imitation!

Several American Redstarts all along the road, including an immature male
singing in woods near the steep bare bank across another creek from dark brown
house at #508 on east side of road.

I have seen/heard HOODED WARBLERS both on Sweazey Rd. at the bottom below
Cornell small fruits orchard, in wooded area, and in woods along Lansing
Station Rd. near my place at #535.
Many G. CATBIRDS, AMERICAN REDSTARTS along Lansing Station Rd and Bill George
Rd., including what must be an immature male (who resembles a female) singing a
lot south of #457.
Also, YELLOW WARBLERS, COMMON YELLOWTHROATS below orchard on Sweazey OVENBIRD
heard, then seen in woods above #535 Lans. Stat. Rd., as well as RED EYED
VIREOS singing at #535 and near #457. Lots of B. ORIOLE GREAT CRESTED
FLYCATCHERS singing/sightings, too.

We got many good looks at a hooded warbler slightly after noon at Monkey Run.
It was located along the path going left (west) as you face the creek entering
from the 366 side. Follow the path along the creek, past the remains of the
old bridge, until the path moves away from the creek and is about to go up the
hill. It was located in low branches on both sides of the path, singing
strongly. Max (Richard Maxwell)

[cayugabirds-l] Hooded Warbler at Lab

2013-08-15 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
A short lunchtime walk on the Wilson Trail NW of the Lab building turned up a
beautiful male HOODED WARBLER between the little bridge and the main pond.
Also, a Chestnut-sided Warbler, American Redstart, and Common Yellowthroat.

Together with an unexpected female CERULEAN WARBLER this morning on Yellow Barn
Rd, I've seen more warblers today than I expected!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Hooded Warbler songs

2013-05-22 Thread Matthew Medler
For those interested in more about Hooded Warbler songs, the Birds of North
America account describes two singing modes in Hooded Warbler: repeat mode
and mixed mode:

Territorial males sing during the breeding season; males have several
song types that differ in frequency range and number of notes (Godard 1991,
Wiley et al. 1994). Males have 4–9 crystallized song patterns that can be
divided into “repeat” versus “mixed” mode (see Fig. 3a). The repeat mode song
consists of about 4–5 notes (rendered ta-wit ta-wit ta-wit tee-yo) and repeated
at a rate of 5–6/min. Repeat mode songs end with either 1
or 2 high notes followed by a lower chevron-shaped note. The other 3–8
song patterns (Fig. 3b, c) are sung in an irregular sequence at a rate of
10–12/min (“mixed”
mode). Repeat mode is used more frequently prior to attracting a mate.
About 5% of males sing an atypical song type in repeat mode, but most
attract mates.
If you'd like to hear more recordings of Hooded Warbler, check out the Macaulay
Library web site (www.macaulaylibrary.org), which has 76 recordings, including
15 from New York. Particularly interesting is this long recording from Mike
Andersen, which includes repeat mode singing, chip notes, and mixed mode
singing. Pretty cool recording!

Hi all,
I posted last Sunday that I heard a call which I could not recognize. Here it

to track it down as my friend's kids wanted to see the Hairy Woodpeckers.
There is also spectrogram of the sound on the Soundcloud if that is helpful.

BTW, one of the kids is hooked to birds. My friend told me that early morning

[cayugabirds-l] Hooded Warbler, CNC

2012-05-13 Thread Nancy W Dickinson
This morning our small group found the Hooded Warbler on territory at CNC. It
perched in plain sight, singing, for a good five minutes, and gave us quite a
show. Also exciting were a number of Veerys strolling along the path in front
of us, giving long views but no songs, as well as male and female Scarlet
Tanagers together, up close. (We stayed in the woods and did not go up to the
fields, so may have missed a few species up there.)

To find the Hooded Warbler, enter the woods on the right below the lodge, cross
the bridge, and take the middle path to where it ends at another bridge (west
side of the log cabin clearing). The bird was defending the area on the left,
where there are maple saplings.

My eBird report follows. Happy Mother's Day!

[cayugabirds-l] Hooded Warbler and Hermit Thrush Singing near South Hill Rail Trail

2011-05-31 Thread Stuart Krasnoff
I hiked off-trail below the South Hill Rail Trail near the Burns Rd. entrance
this afternoon between 1::00 and 3:00 PM. I had two encounters with birds I've
never heard singing in those woods. One was a Hermit Thrush singing
sporadically in tall timber on the edge of a gorge. About an hour later I had
a Hooded Warbler singing persistently in another area about 1/4 mile away from
the thrush . With no encouragement from me the Hooded came down to check me
out and we made naked-eye contact. I watched him sing for a few minutes and
observed some brief aerobatic interactions with another bird. A singing Tufted
Titmouse and a foraging Red-eyed Vireo were nearby so it could have been either
one of them, or maybe...I'd like to think... it was a Hooded female. I've had
both these species in the area in the past but never singing as if on
territory. I'd be interested in any observations anyone might have suggesting
either of these species might be regular breeders in the lower Six-mile Basin.
If anyone (the June counter for this area?) wants to know how to find the
exact location for these birds please contact me off-list.

Thanks...Stuart
