We do the same thing, but only put out white millet there. The squirrels 
are more interested in scavenging under the sunflower seed feeders, and 
the doves also prefer the sunflower seed, so the juncos & other sparrows 
mostly get the area under the picnic table to themselves.

Several years ago I started putting seed under the picnic table on my deck. I 
don’t have a covered platform feeder because my plague of squirrels is too bad. 
The protected space was very appreciated by lots of birds and squirrels. The 
wooden table disintegrated and I had to let it go. But, I kept a couple of 
benches that I now link together and use as cover for the “ground seed” I put 
out for the juncos and doves. That was heavily used this weekend!

Yes, you may well have different birds than usual at your feeders today. With 
the heavy snow covering many wild food sources and even covering some feeding 
stations on the ground, birds are making a special effort to find food by going 
to feeding stations they don’t normally visit. 

Meanwhile, in the past few days & weeks many birds have migrated into the area, 
such as Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles (who may flock together in 
winter and during migration) and Song Sparrows (more than just those returning 
to local territories, also lots who will head farther north). And lots of 
winter visitors are still in the area, such as Dark-eyed Juncos (who regularly 
visit feeders), and American Tree Sparrows (who rarely visit my feeder, but I’m 
sure go to other people’s feeders). The American Tree Sparrows may stay until 
early April, about the time that many Chipping Sparrows return (This makes the 
ID challenge between them more fun: can you see them together?)

The sparrows usually feed on the ground, but today a Song Sparrow learned to 
use my hanging tube of sunflower seeds and also started coming up to my deck 
which I strew with sunflower seeds, even though in the past the Song Sparrows 
have stayed on the ground below the deck eating fallen seeds there. 

I’ve been seeing flocks of blackbirds (Red-winged Blackbirds &/or Common 
Grackles) flying past for several days, but today a mixed flock stopped and 
visited the feeders at my next door neighbor’s and at my place. They were new 
feeder birds for the year. 

Meanwhile I was having trouble keeping the seeds accessible. The snow would 
cover it faster than the birds would venture forth after I put it out. Mourning 
Doves regularly visit and eat seeds on the railing of my deck, but today the 
first one alit on the railing and stood staring at the inch-deep snow, then 
walked forward along the railing not seeing any food. The second Mourning Dove 
alit behind the first but could see the seeds through the first dove’s 
footprints, so it walked behind, eating the entire time. A third Mourning Dove 
alit behind the second, and because there were so many footprints, it didn’t 
have to walk but just stayed there eating.  

After the Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles figured out this was a food 
source, they trampled the snow on the railing pretty well.

Just had an arrival of Song Sparrows.  I can also hear them singing. Yesterday 
I had my FOS Turkey Vulture.  I’ve seen more today.

[cayugabirds-l] Song Sparrow

We had a Song Sparrow under our bird feeders today and our 2-3 White Throated 
Sparrows remain.   There are also dozens of Goldfinches, House Finches, our 
resident Juncos, a few Chicadees and a couple of Mourning Doves.
 A pair of Carolina Wrens enjoyed the suet and the lovely Cardinals ate the 
sunflower seeds.   I saw a Cardinal sampling the frozen berries on the 
Hackberry. Not much activity from Blue Jays or Woodpeckers yet.

This morning I awoke to a cacophony of Red-wing Blackbirds singing. Thought I 
was on Van Dyne Spoor Road. No song Sparrow yet.  I also had lots of Common 
Grackles yesterday.

with a large (20) flock of Grackles. All yesterday. Oh - and our first Woodcock 
doing it’s sky dance at 6 am Thursday morning. Now, where’s the Towhee??

[cayugabirds-l] Song Sparrow

Union Springs: 19 Jan. 2015.

Confirmed this a.m. that the bird I saw yesterday afternoon in dim light 
under one of our cedar trees was indeed a SONG SPARROW, my FOY.
As I was watching the song sparrow a Cooper's hawk came sweeping by on 
its way to the stand of spruces where the the little birds hide out. It 
has been patrolling quite regularly.


Deer came again about 1 a.m. to raid a feeder that is no longer where 
they can bump it to get sunflower seeds. At least one skunk comes to get 
seed droppings. If deer, squirrels, possums, racoons, rabbits, chucks  
rodents were as useful as skunks, I wouldn't resent their presence. As 
it is, they aren't welcome!!!

My Song Sparrow also arrived today morning and he was singing his heart out. I 
know it is the same guy because his song seems to be the same. I recorded him 
among the traffic noise. But will confirm it later with the songs of the

Just had our first SONG SPARROW of the year pop into our yard.  The 
early migrants must be moving in.  As I recall, red-winged blackbirds 
have been known to show up near the end of February, so before you know 
it, they will appear!

There was a flock of 50 almost certainly red-winged blackbirds humming north 
over Mays Point on Sat..  They were not starlings or grackles, but I was not 
close enough for a positive ID.   S. Fast

[cayugabirds-l] Song Sparrow at Lab

As expected, the Lab feeding garden is full of Red-winged Blackbirds today.  
There are also lots of sparrows, mostly American Tree, but also including at 
least 2 White-throated Sparrows and a SONG SPARROW.

Also Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls continue.

Hi,

I joined the list 2 years ago when my daughter began collage at IC. It is
great to compare what is happening in the Cayuga basin with western Mass. 

I have a question that I was hoping someone might be able to answer. The
other day a friend of mine brought me a Song Sparrow that there cat had
killed and covering its feet are light brown warty or fleshy growths.
Essentially creating a club like foot.  I included a photo however the
quality is not very good. Any ideas?

Hi Greg,

 

   I'm replying from my web mail, so for some reason I can't reply to the
entire list.  However, that Song Sparrow had an infection of avian pox (a
virus that causes growths like that on the hard parts of birds.  I did my
PhD research on Song Sparrows (near Vancouver Island), and our study
population always had a small number of diseased birds...some of which lived
for multiple years with these sorts of growths.  My (imperfect)
understanding of avian pox is that birds will die not from the infection per
se, but instead if the disease gets to the point of debilitating the a bird
(either growths at the beak that prevent feeding, or severe growths on its
legs that prevent their use).

I'm not certain what it is, but there's a chance that someone
over in CUMV (Cornell University Museum of Vertebrates) might know, or,
failing that, the Vet college ( http://vet.cornell.edu ). I'm also including

sang from two of his favorite perches! This is fifth year in a row he has
