It looks like you need to install python2.4 (and python2.4-dev if using the
package manager) and use that as the default during the build (remove
/usr/bin/python and symlink it to python2.4 instead of /usr/bin/python2.5 ;
after compiling phaser you can change it back).

The problem appears to be that you are not the owner of the CCP4, but
root is;
this can happen even if you are the only user. From your email it
looks CCP4 belongs to root.
There are three solutions:
1.
cd $CCP4
cd ..
sudo chown -R yourname.yourgroup
2.
for ARP/wARP
I think CCP4 gives you the option to include the Python sources (v 2.4).
That would be better than to mess with the system python.
BTW: I've fixed the problems you are seeing a long time ago, even before
Python 2.5 was released. In the next CCP4 release it'll probably work
with the system python.

Probably. You should source either the first or the second file depending
on your shell (the first for bash, the second for tcsh/csh). That might
be the cause of your subsequent problem.
For purposes of debugging, can you send us output for the following three
