I want to update the system because I haven't updated CentOS5.3 from the
time when I installed it. But I am also afraid of directly using yum

No, I'm not running Network Manager. When I start it it just turn off my
link. I'm working in runlevel 3 over a telnet conection using the wireless
link.
When Network Manager starts it just turn off the wireless link and never
comes off again.
