if you are using vlans i'd suspect the ethernet card in the machines that are misbehaving.  for wireshark you probably need to tee the network, or use a spare machine to run the ethernet through (bridged)  and run wireshark on the inserted machine (there are of course taps).  might also monitor

generally, no it won't update the kernel.  you can get security fixes for it if your' system is looking for updates regularly (you should set it to check at least daily).  it will usually update a version ( i.e. 2.16 would upgrade to 2.X.) and if you let it.  you generally don't want auto

you might check bios setting, processor throttling may be turned off, or it may well be a kernel or a virus issue (i assume some viruses care about the desktop enviroment).  i suspect, slightly, a virus as they are usually resource hogs, which makes them easilly detectable to someone who knows

That's why i periodically clean my mother boards with water, followed by distilled water and ideally everclear to reduce drying time (Not rubbing alcohol etc., it nearly always has excessive impurities that leave a solid residue, and methanol can be damaging as well as being fairly toxic).

what file system are you using?  ssd drives have different characteristics that need to be accomadated (including a relatively slow write process which is obvious as soon as the buffer is full), and never, never put a swap partition on it, the high activity will wear it out rather quickly.
