It's actually a tad easier than that as long as you don't mind forcing
wxGTK to stay at 2.6.3-1. I just removed the current version of
wxGTK
(rpm -e wxGTK-2.8.9-1.el5.rf ) and then installed
audacity-1.3.0b-1.el5.rf and wxGTK-2.6.3-1.el5.rf by doing a yum
localinstall.

audacity is ready for prime time. Anyone know of any other packages
that are dependent on wxGTK and need the most recent version?
I don't use audicity or much that's not box stock, but maybe this
helps?
$ rpm -q --whatrequires

What is there available for Centos?
ffmpeg, mencoder.
ffmpeg is also handy for stripping the mp3 sound parts out of a .flv
(or any other) video file. It's a nice, quick CLI tool

I do have Audacity on an XP system, so I do have the option to shuffle
files between systems
Sox would be the obvious choice for conversions but the Centos version
has mp3

Have you tried helping to resolve that issue with rpmforge?

Which version of CentOS are you running? (version and architecture please)
I have audacity working perfectly, I do compile it myself, but can make
it available in an rpm package
