OK,

Answering my own question here in case it helps elsewhere. The main
problem existed between the keyboard and chair.

When the VMware host was installed some time ago it was neglected to
configure NTP on the host itself, hence the time had drifted quite
significantly. So when open-vm-tools came up, it synced off the VMware
host system time and over-rode the VM's hardware clock. Then when
chrony came up later in the boot process it pushed the time back correctly.

Now with NTP running on the VMware host the boot is clean with SSSD and
Network Manager are functioning as expected

Frustrating.

Thanks,
-pete

[CentOS] System Time Jumps During Boot on CentOS 7

2017-01-18 Thread Peter Brady
Hi All,

Just noticed a funny time jump on a testing CentOS 7 VM. Specifically
the system time jumps around by a few hours during system boot. The
below is a selection from /var/log/messages during boot:

Jan 19 12:49:57 arr-data-dev chronyd[716]: Frequency -0.829 +/- 0.007
ppm read from /var/lib/chrony/drift
Jan 19 12:49:57 arr-data-dev polkitd[720]: Started polkitd version 0.112

Jan 19 12:49:57 arr-data-dev systemd: Starting Remote File Systems (Pre).

Jan 19 20:47:57 arr-data-dev systemd: Time has been changed
Jan 19 20:47:57 arr-data-dev chronyd[716]: Forward time jump detected!
Jan 19 20:47:57 arr-data-dev sssd[be[default]]: Starting up

Jan 19 20:48:05 arr-data-dev systemd: Starting Multi-User System.
Jan 19 20:48:05 arr-data-dev systemd: Starting Update UTMP about System

Jan 19 20:48:05 arr-data-dev systemd: Started Update UTMP about System

Jan 19 12:50:10 arr-data-dev chronyd[716]: Selected source IP-CHANGED
Jan 19 12:50:11 arr-data-dev chronyd[716]: Selected source IP-CHANGED

For reference the 12:49 -> 12:50 is the correct local time, I'm in the
Australian Eastern Daylight Saving time zone and my hardware clock (from
hwclock) is close to that time.

The plus eight hours jump has me curious though as I think this is
causing some trouble for SSSD and Network Manager that are starting up
in interval when the time is stepped forward. Given I'm at +11 from UTC
the system clock does not appear to be jumping to UTC.

I'm running 3.10.0-514.2.2.el7.x86_64 with yum reporting no patches.
This is a VM running on ESXi 5.6.

According to /var/log/boot.log everything started up OK.

Has anyone seen anything similar?

Thanks in advance,
-pete

For the archive's sake:

https://plus.google.com/+GordonMessmer/posts/eSe6iNmk1Fs?sfc=false

During testing, I found that under CentOS 7.2, the default storage
layout for software RAID5 was the worst possible configuration. 512k
blocks perform noticeably worse than 64k blocks, and LVM had a
tremendous impact as well.

After upgrading to CentOS 7.3, which features a newer mpt3sas driver,
performance improved significantly. LVM's overhead has decreased to an
acceptable level (from my point of view).

Because chunk size has a significant impact on performance, I'm going to
file an RFE to change the default chunk size for RAID5 and RAID6 volumes.

Be careful about expecting VLANs to provide security. VLANs are for
traffic management are not directly a security tool. They might be
useful in a carefully designed security model.

I do something like this (although FreeBSD is my dhcp server) only I
do like the original proposal, two addresses on the DHCP server and
both subnets configured. Part of my dhcp configuration includes:

shared-network shared {
# Primary subnet
subnet 192.168.30.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
option routers 192.168.30.1;
max-lease-time 86400;
default-lease-time 86400;
authoritative;

range 192.168.30.48 192.168.30.59;
}

# Secondary subnet
subnet 192.168.40.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
option routers 192.168.40.1;
max-lease-time 86400;
default-lease-time 86400;
authoritative;
}
} # end of shared-network shared

host ip-phone-1 {
hardware ethernet 00:0b:82:xx:xx:xx;
## fixed-address 192.168.30.129;
fixed-address 192.168.40.129;
}

There are other things necessary to make this all work. I also have a
FreeBSD system acting as a router between the subnets and my ISP
connection. I also have a caching dns service on both subnets (I
didn't include the dns related configuration in the example above).

As others have suggested, this also is NOT a security technique. The
systems in each address space will have access to systems in the other
address space even without a router. I don't distinguish between
trusted and untrusted networks, I assume all are untrusted and secure
the systems themselves as needed.

In the mean time, if you have not disabled it, you should find some
collected statistics from sysstat/sar.
Look at the sarXX files under /var/log/sa. They should be kept for 30 day
by default in CentOS 7.
So you can compare cpu, mem, I/O profiles before and after the upgrade.
If you have access to Red Hat documents you can look also here:
https://access.redhat.com/articles/325783

or in general some articles like this:
https://www.blackmoreops.com/2014/06/18/sysstat-sar-examples-usage/
and to create pdf graphics with kSar

Well, nothing on our (CentOS) side claims that X was working.
Technically a lot of pkgs were built, but all images are minimal.
If you're intestested into armhfp/aarch64, can you consider subscribing
to the dedicated arm-dev list
(https://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/arm-dev) and start a thread
there ?

I don't remember if someone already tried to have X working on such
armhfp boards (with CentOS pkgs that is)

[CentOS] Increase CPU usage on HV after upgrade (7.2 -> 7.3)

2017-01-18 Thread Subscriber
Hello ,

After upgrading the system from CentOS 7.2.1511 to CenOS 7.3.1611 I
see that the average processing time has increased from 5-7% to 12-15%
(doubled). Not critical but it is not pleasant. Server as KVM with 5
virtual machines. Someone noticed something similar? If so, how to fix
that?

Thx.

If so, how to fix
that?

Thx.

Yikes... What sense does that make??? (rhetorical really)

So does that mean we have to install a binary driver like an NVIDIA driver
set?
If so where is that located ?
I have not found it.

Thanks,

X does not work in CentOS on the PI .. the drivers required to make it
work are proprietary.

[CentOS] PI3

2017-01-18 Thread Jerry Geis
Hi All,

I downloaded:
http://mirror.centos.org/altarch/7/isos/armhfp/
for the PI3

This article says the PI3 runs X.
http://news.softpedia.com/news/centos-7-linux-officially-released-for-raspberry-pi-2-banana-pi-and-cubietruck-497891.shtml

When I groupinstall Gnome desktop and reboot, then run startx I get an
error about no screens found.

Whats the trick to get X on the PI3?

Thanks,

You could say the same thing about computers in general:
I hate them, they automated many tasks in life and took many jobs out of the
market!.

Hi Gianluca

Thanks for this. I will put this into a cron job to bring the link back up
if it drops. However, as you can see it shouldn't ne needed. One more
reason I hate NetworkManager

[root@lcomp2 ~]# nmcli con show RW-WIFI |grep connection.autoconnect
connection.autoconnect: yes
connection.autoconnect-priority:0
connection.autoconnect-slaves:  -1 (default)
[root@lcomp2 ~]#
