[CentOS] Query on make

2013-12-04 Thread Rajagopal Swaminathan
Greetings,

I have created several scripts which needs to be packaged.

I have done my groundwork on rpmbuild

Let us say I have 4 directories with scripts in them
dir1, dir2, dir3 and dir4

I want to create different packages which will contain the compiled
code (err.. shc)
pack1: dir1,dir2
pack2: dir1,dir3
pack3: dir1,dir3

I want the resulting rpm packages will be residing elsewhere (perhaps
BUILDROOT).

Now I am aware of using different specfiles

But When and how do I compile the packages?

Using makefiles? Can it produce different variants?

I am a bit confused as to the workflow.

the sources cannot be part of eithr the srpm or the deliverable rpms.

Please note that this project will be maintained by someone else with
unknown familiarity.

Any suggestions, pointers, help etc. please?

[CentOS] About Memory mirroring

2013-10-03 Thread Rajagopal Swaminathan
Greetings,

Was wondering if any software exists for mirroring memory across hosts
like what drbd does for disks.

I am somewhat aware of copying of a VM's memory when a live migration is done.

Another query, as I have not seen too many VM migrations, is that what
happens to the memory contents such as data yet to be written onto
disk, states etc happens when one of the RHCS cluster hosts which is
running VM fail: does the cluster restart the machine?

An example perhaps would be suppose the VM is running a movie what
would the user's experience would be.

I tried it on cluster with ctdb. The movie simply restarted.

Any experiences?

Yes. See below by learnings.

Does your system BIOS try to boot from /dev/sdc once it finds /dev/sda or
 /dev/sdb isn't bootable?
You might just need to move cables so your SSD becomes /dev/sda.

At that time It was trying to boot from all the possible devices.

Moral of the story:
1. To play safe, use a seperate device such as the ssd or some drive
smaller than 2tb as the boot device on the older systems without UEFI.
2. Devices 2TB should have GPT and they mount fine
3. If the boot device itself is 2TB, Make sure that UEFI is there in
the motherboard if it is possible. Else FC17 had created a EFI
partition and I had not gone into the details. Perhaps I should study
that now.
4. Be Wary of Server hardware as they are conservative like centos.
The firmware changes very slowly. Esp I guess with IBM like companies
who would like to do a 5 minutes diagnostics even in x-series (perhaps
a hangover from i-series, p-series and z-series stuff). I don't blame
them as it is part of the game.

BTW, I heard that companies like IBM, HP and DELL seem require
customer quoting RHEL subscription number for obtaining the requisite
drivers from their requisite sites. Earlier this was not the practice.
It was available free. Is my understanding correct or is it some kind
of salestalk?

[CentOS] Qeury regarding 64GB SSD + 2tb?

2013-09-06 Thread Rajagopal Swaminathan
Greetings,

I have a system x3100 m4 system with 64GB SSD for OS and 2x2tb for
data as MD device (software RAID).

It had Fedora 17 with EFI/

I tried to install centos 6. deleting the existing partitions on the
SSD /dev/sdc.

sda and sdb are the 2x2tb md device mounted on /home.

no joy.

googling
Questions:

1. Where do I locate the boot loader? /dev/sdc? is MBR (the default
with Centos) enough
2. Is it necessary to have GPT label and EFI on /dev/sdc?
3. Will it affect in anyway sda and sdb (I am not choosing to format them)?

any pointers with information to wrap my head around

FC17 was running fine after I fsck-ed the /dev/sdc4 which had vanished
when this box came in.

To my knowlege, a root file system of size 64GB should be handled
peacefully by centos.

GPT comes into picture only on 2tb partitions for different mountpoints.

or is it that any system mounting more than 2tb disk as non-root will
necessarily need a boot disk with a GPT label and EFI partition?

Am I right or have I got it all wrong?

Any reply and pointers appreciated.

I changed the label on the 64 GB ssd to msdos using parted in the
ctrl+alt+F2 terminal window just before the partitioning.

select /dev/sdc
mklabel msdos
(warned about removal and asked for confirmation and I assented)
quit

switched to GUI
Retried partitiong, formatting through the standard installer GUI and
it booted and mounted the 2tb md device on home.

So far so good.

Yes, that is the first thing I tried. but too slow for the task at hand.

An average operator is able to process about 1000+ images per shift with MODI.

And I can't automate it with imagemagick+ some bash script as it is
inherently a visual task -- meaning human intervention is required.

I am trying TIFF--PDF and then PDFShuffler but that does not help me
crop a part (say signature/photo appearing at random location) and
insert it as a new page.

GS gives me reasonable filesize with -r300. but I somehow not prefer
tiff-pdf-tif route

Gwenview/gthumb/ and other image handling apps just cant handle
multi-page tiff files.

In AIX (for example) if you said

Code:
echo 1,2,3,4,5 | cut -d, -f3,1,5

you would get output as 3,1,5

But the cut command in Linux behaves differently.

From the man page:
Quote:
Selected input is written in the same order that it is read, and is
written exactly once.

Which I think is poor. I can't see any way to do what you want with cut.

 play with disk controllers.

Now I have CentOS 6.3 (recently installed) and going to achieve the same
thing under KVM. Shouldn't be different.

I have a dual boot -- Centos 6.3 and Win 7 running on bare metal

There are three NTFS partition and 3 partitions for centos -- /boot,
swap and LVM PV device.

I am able to access NTFS when centos is booted.

I have installed XP as a guest under Centos.

Now I want to install, say firefox, whose setup file is in the second
NTFS partition of host from the XP guest.

How to make the partition visible to the guest?

handle that obsolete. Because of that, it breaks the installation.

This issue should be taken care of on the 6.4 ISOs.

So, if you do not install openmpi items, you should be OK.

Thanks Johnny for the information.

I guess I don't need MPI as these systems mostly are the one or two in

ipmi and the sort.

I will remember that.

I do install clustering (without any fencing device or manual fencing

[CentOS] Missing dependency in C6 ISO

2012-08-11 Thread Rajagopal Swaminathan
Greetings,

I had downloaded c6 64 bits ISO, selected all packages to be installed.

One dependency warning relating to Emacs appeared. I chose to
continue. Unfortunately I was multitasking and did not note down the
package name

Twice this issue appeared -- first time around aborted install due to power cut.

Did anybody else face this situation?

Also is there a better way with just DVDs and not LAN to select all
package install. (no Kickstart, NFS server etc.) I have the ISO images
though.

Right, its based on duplicate functionality. in some cases ( like
sendmail + postfix ) you can indeed install both. But in others, you cant.

back in the RH5/6 days (not RHEL) I used to commonly choose an
everything installation. now that the distribution is so big
 I don't even try, anymore.

yeah, and the idea of 'everything' is a bit odd given that you can now
include external repos - so you might get an everything install that
brings in 12,000 rpms - runs for 3 days to get done - and needs 50GB of
 disk space :)..

Thanks KB, for the explanation.

I will be more careful this time around.

The missing dependency I was talking about was about :

Re: [CentOS] Rozważania odnośnie storage?

2012-01-13 Thread Rajagopal Swaminathan
Greetings,

2012/1/13 Rafał Radecki radecki.ra...@gmail.com:
 Cześć.

Aktualnie mam do czynienia z klastrem pocztowym, w którym pliki
wiadomości pocztowych użytkowników są przechowywane na raid
software-owym udostępnianym po NFS. Serwerów NFS jest kilka, każdy
udostępnia podzbiór wiadomości dla odpowiedniego serwera z postfix-em,
który jest klientem NFS. Dane z jakiego serwera NFS host frontend z
postfix-em powinien montować katalogi z pocztą są w MySQL.

Zastanawiamy się nad zastąpieniem kilku host-ów storage jednym
rozwiązaniem, macierzą o odpowiedniej pojemności dyskowej i wydajności
I/O. Możecie podpowiedzieć plusy i minusy takiego rozwiązania? Czy
macierze zazwyczaj dysponują kilkukrotnie większą wydajnością I/O niż
pojedynczy serwer z dyskami SATA? Czy taka wydajność I/O jest
skalowalna? Czy skalować przestrzeń dyskową w macierzach można bez
 ograniczeń?

 Dzięki!

 Pozdrawiam,
 R.

What was that in simple English?

Any suggestion for a Chat server (preferably multi protocol)?

Now that you mention it, yes I did restart the apache

I see ejabberd and jabberd in EPEL. can't say about others.

Thanks for the suggestion

Immediately after your mail, Les has suggested Openfire too

I will try setting it up in case I have issues with BigBlueButton (for

[CentOS] A silly question about getting access to webapp installed with yum

2012-01-11 Thread Rajagopal Swaminathan
Greetings,

I have helped host a few applications such as GLPI, OCSInventory, etc
etc. using the tarball method and untarring them in /var/www/htom
directory.

I have never done them though using yum.

I was trying to install Trac, Bugzilla etc using yum install method on
a Centos 6.2 box.

Somehow I am not able to see the respective pages say even using
http://localhost/trac or http://localhost/bugzilla

Now comes the elementary and stupid question:

Now where do these stuff get installed? they are not under /var/www/html

I did find some under /usr/share

Any pointers to instantiate them?

I am not good at understanding what that beast of yum does as to post
install script. Though I have created a mysql with CSV and blackhole
engines about a year back and as I did it for a client of the company
where I worked then and cannot have my grubby hands on that script.

Any help appreciated.

TIA

Yum only downloads and installs RPM files, so in general you will use
the rpm command to get the details of the packages you installed.

You can see all the files included in a package by using rpm --query
--list package.  For apache web apps, the centos style is to place
an include file in /etc/httpd/conf.d with the configuration for the
app, but your apps might have done something different.  Take a look
at the include file and see if you need to configure something.  There
may be docs in /usr/share/doc/packagename explaining what you need
 to do.

Sure. I will do that in about 13 hours and report back to this list.
