Thanks for all the input everyone,
Basically I trashed the smb.conf and the folder I wanted to share, restarted
the machine, re-wrote the smb.conf (again) and re-made the directory and
set permissions etc, restarted the machine and all is well!

Worth a shot! :-) I've wasted far too much time in the past on a new
samba server only to realise I'd forgotten to disable SELinux.
What permissions do you have set on /home/mars?

try with log level = X

Okay... had a closer look and suggests that your users are not
authenticating properly.
