A mentor once told me 'if you turn on the computer, you have just
created a potential security problem. The only secure computer

Some of them do and some of them don't, depends. ICQ's a beast because it
"listens" on a TON of ports. Generally the fewer ports a proggy listens on,

To answer your question: If you guys are behind a well-configured firewall, then to
allow your messenger to work,
you'll need to open ports up. This always increases risk.. how great of a risk varies.

There are several known buffer overflows and DoS vulnerabilities that affect
various versions of AOL's IM client software. If you have a firewall in

This is the reason why I created Chatster. By the way, the people that have downloaded
Chatster, there will be a new version out next week. The new version is 10x better

change it.
Thanks,

such it selects a different port for each connection and that creates some
serious firewall
That is why I created Chatster. It uses a CF site to do all the message processing.
Update: Chatster V2 will be out next week for testing. It is a major update with
numerous enhancemnts and loads of documentation.

You might want to take a look at SecurityFocus and/or the Common
Vulnerability and Exposure database. Contrary to your _assumptions_ there
are a number of serious problems with IM. As a friendly suggestion, I would
