Granted, last year was my first and I have no idea what it costs to provide
all those TeraTech coffee mugs 4port USB adapters, etc. but in the end it
was well worth the cash.

I think everyone is looking at this the wrong way... It's not the price of
cfunited right now that matters but the location of the overflow hotels!

Last year we registered late mid march, well at that point your kinda stuck
with the shuttle which isn't bad in it's self. What is bad is attempting to
get back to your hotel when your downtown DC Metro to the medical center
isn't going to cut it when your at Bethesda Marriott.

I would rather pay more and register later, get my hotel room now, than
worry about the actual price of the conf. Don't forget, you could always win
a FREE entry, I did ;-)

I've had fantastic success with them (including them staying up all

They only run cf7 though.

Re: File Upload H2

2008-03-06 Thread Phillip Vector
It's not that coldfusion can't handle bigger files (I used to work at
a place that handled 10MB uploads daily without a hitch), it's that
the code you wrote may not be able to handle it. It could also be the
server processor may be below par for the job (more likely).

What is the code that you are using to process the data? What are the
stats of your server?

On Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 2:45 PM, Ryan J. Heldt [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Re: how handle emails not exists or inactive before sending out

2008-04-23 Thread Phillip Vector
Probably a noob question. :)

How do you set a bounce back address in cfmail? I mean, seperate from
the From field. Is there a setting that allows for a Bounced field
or something?

On Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 8:33 AM, Bobby Hartsfield [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 You could set the bounce back address to an address used only for the
 purpose of collecting the bounced emails. Then cfpop the address, use a
 regex to pull out the emails and remove them from the database.

 I'd personally add a 'numberOfBounces' numeric column to your database and
 instead of deleting the record when the address bounces, increment the
 'numberOfBounces' for that address. Once it hits a specific bounce count,
 then delete it. Bounces don't always mean the address is bad, the next one
 could go through. I see it occasionally.

 The chances of 2 email addresses being found in the body of the bounced
 email is pretty high as well. The address it was sent from and the address
 it was sent to. Just make sure that the address you send FROM doesn't need
 to be subscribed to your mailing list.

something with it) and now, I have another issue..

I get the popup list of employers. I'd like to be able to click on the
name of one and populate the name, address and city fields of the form
WITHOUT submitting it.

I thought about using an anchor link, but that will just take me to
the querry page. I could put in another ajax call, but I think that's
over designing the solution.

Any thoughts or ideas how I could proceed?

It's bad formating. Dave is right. If your anchor is named
developer/ADF/adf_overview.htm, rename it to ADFOverview or

As the browser sees it, you don't have a proper formated tag. Sorry. I
don't see Firefox (it's spelled Mozilla) or Safari supporting this.
Can you put the page on the live server so we can see?

Thoughts? Both me and my boss are confused by this. We tried it on

Yeah.. It's really wierd. I think that since I'm using reader 8.0 and
everyone else is using the latest (8.1.2?) to load up the form, that
may be it. I'm putting on a newer version and hopefully, that will
clear it up.

BTW, do you know how to check the header information to find out what
version reader the user is running?

  Can you provide any more information than this? I work with LiveCycle
  Designer quite a bit, but I'd need more info to answer your question. The
  browser you're using shouldn't make any difference, because the client in
  this case is Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat.

  Are you using a form that does a simple HTTP POST of URL-encoded values? I'm
  assuming so, but it isn't entirely clear. Can you pass the HTTP POST request
  through a recording proxy and see if it differs between your machine and
  someone else's?

  Are you using Adobe Reader on your machine to render the form, or are you
  using Adobe Acrobat? Is everyone else using the same thing? Are they using
  the same version of the same thing? I wouldn't be too surprised if you're
  using Acrobat (since you presumably built the form with LC Designer) and
  everyone else is using Adobe Reader.

 a level of configuration that would allow us to filter, or re-direct, the
 messages it receives instead of relaying them on out to the internet.

  It would be great to find something that would dump the messages into a
 database that we could interface with to verify the emails are being sent
 correctly by the application during development and testing.

  SMTP is a fairly simple protocol, at least when attachments aren't involved,
 so I am guessing this would be fairly easy to build. It also seems like
 someone, somewhere, has probably ran into a similar situation and probably
 solved it too, but I've been asking colleagues and Google without any luck.

  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Oh.

Usually, as I've seen it, QA is the same as Developers.

If QA is testing out the functionality of your app, then why do they
need a special SMTP. Just have them get a google mail account and go
through the forms or whatever and put that in as their emails.

If they do more then what users would do, why would they have trouble
with the CFAdmin log files?

Sorry, not tryingto be rude, but I guess I don't understand what the
purpose of such a thing would be.

  Yes, we could check the mailsent log, but it's not always viable to give our
 QA testers access to the log files, and it's not real warm and fuzzy either.

2008-05-02 Thread Phillip Vector
Remove most of the users from the pre-production database and those
that are left (2 or 3 or however many you need to test your app),
replace those with Yahoo or gmail addresses.

When you roll it out, make sure before you do, you copy the users
table from the production DB to the pre-production DB.

I mean, if you are dead set on using a separate SMTP, I can provide
one for you, but it will cost your company money. I'm just saying that
there is a much cheaper way.

  Sorry, not tryingto be rude, but I guess I don't understand what the

  No need to apologize. Let avoid the whole QA vs. Developer issue and lay
 out the ugly details of the situation.

  The specific incident that started my search was that during testing, our
 pre-production environment sent out emails to real customers. The database
 in pre-production starts out as a copy of our production database, and then
 has any alterations applied to it that are required by the release being
 tested (which is in itself a partial test of the roll-out plan). When the
 scheduled jobs that are part of this application were enabled, they started
 sending emails using the contact information in the database.

  My initial reaction was to simply disable CFMAIL by pointing it to a bogus
 SMTP server. That would have, however, prevented QA from testing the email
 functionality of the application, hence my search for a proxy that would
 capture the emails for later inspection / validation.

Re: 404's

2008-05-08 Thread Phillip Vector
What

Do you know what a 404 page is? It's on the server. You don't use IE
to change it unless you are talking a web based control panel (and
even then, that's specific to what kind of web package you have).

So... the short answer is... Depends.

 You need to put the original files back and 301 them to the new files.

 You can also use ISAPI rewrite.

 I would not redirect all 404's to one page.

 I've been looking for ways to handle the 404 problems, especially for SEO.

 I host several sites on the same IIS server, running CF 7, so I'm reluctant
 to use the server wide 404 mapping in CF Admin.

 What other options do I have? If I could just redirect all 404's to one

 a single file with a list of the old/new file mappings and have the browser
 redirected to the right place?

There are several ways to do this..

1) Look into Prototype AJAX handlers. Best way to do it IMHO so no
reload is needed.
2) Look into CF AJAX if using CF8.
3) Have the form submit to a delete page and have that then reload the form.
4) Refer to itself and check to see if form.delete is passed to see if
you should delete it.
5) Some other way I can't think of until I have my morning coffee.

Sounds like a management problem then actually..

You may want to check out Shift4. They are pretty cheap and are pretty
reliable. I used to work for them and trust me.. Security is #1 for
them.

If not, then you need to get on the phone with them and complain that
they are assisting with fraud or whatever else you can come up with.
That becomes a problem with the company.

Either that, or store the cards on your site, encrypt them and hope
for the best. I'd get in print someplace that your managers know they
are taking a risk though and it's not your fault if you get hacked and
all the credit card numbers are gone.

Re: SMS Gateway Questions

2008-05-27 Thread Phillip Vector
It may be just me and not understanding fully what SMS is...

SMS is the ability to send messages to cell phones in the form of text
messages.. Right?

Why can't you slap the appropriate ending on their cell phone number
and send it that way via CFMail? ([EMAIL PROTECTED] or some such)

If you want inbound, couldn't you use cfpop to check an empty account
to see if any are received?

What am I not understanding?

On Tue, May 27, 2008 at 2:20 PM, Mike Kear [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 [A] Pricing: SMS messages are a commodity. The big providers buy in
 large quantity from whoever has the best price today, and on-sell in
 smaller quantities for larger prices. Today, Xcompany might be the
 best deal, but tomorrow Y Company might be a better deal.So when
 you do your application, expect to have to provide for switching from
 one provider to another. (in other words, build a cfc method that
 sends a message through the provider, so you can easliy switch to
 another provider by just writing another method)

 [B] you have to buy time through a phone or SMS provider. Just as
 you need to buy serices from an ISP or a cell phone provider.
 Messages are priced using a unit called a credit. A SMS might cost
 one credit, and a MMS might cost two credits. Or as a promotion, the
 provider might say that between certain hours, SMS's are 0.75 credits.
   How much you pay for a credit depends on how many you buy at a
 time. Buy more, they cost you less.

 [C] other issues: Access: not all providers accept the output from
 the SMS gateway. The one I used for a while for example required
 me to send a XML packet in a specific format. Another required an
 email. The service outside the USA can be a LOT better than the
 service Inside the USA. I'm afraid the USA lags behind the rest of
 the industrialised world when it comes to modile technology. One
 provider i was using for example, sent messages seamlessly to over
 540 networks in 190 countries, and can accept up to 5000 SMS messages
 per minute. WIth European providers you dont need to know or care
 where in teh world your recipient is, or what phone provider they're
 with - just send the message with teh fully qualified cell phone
 number and wherever that phone is in teh world the message will be
 delivered if it's turned on and connected to a network.

 Speed: I worried about sending Australian messages to a European SMS
 provider, but it proved not an issue. I set up several time tests
 and found there was no appreciable delay in sending my messages
 through Eruope and Africa compared to sending from one mobile handset
 to another across the room.

 Inbound numbers: All my comments above are related to outbound
 messages - where you are sending messages to peopleIt's a little
 more complicated to receive messages, in that you have to have a
 provider in the country you are expecting to receive messages from.
 So while you might send your messages OUT through a Chinese or Indian
 or German company, you'll need to have inbound messages from USA
 customers coming through a USA provider, or else your customers will
 have to dial an international number to send their message. You might
 find some resistance on their part to accept the cost of that. But
 you dont have to have the same provider for both inbound and outbound
 messages.

 The main point is - expect to be changing providers.Prices change
 regularly and new providers come on the scene - it's a commodity like
 copy paper and coffee and sugar - If you build your application from
 the start expecting to want to change providers, you can be a lot more
 flexible and take account of changes in the market as they happen,
 without a lot of disruption to your code.

 Hope this helps.

Re: Trapping multiple clicks

2008-05-28 Thread Phillip Vector
It won't stop multiple instances... But when I ran a system that was
prone to multiple clicks, I would check to see if a Using System
flag was set in the Database. If it wasn't, then I'd run the process
(which first thing it would do would be to set the flag). If it was
already set, then I would bypass the whole logic and just return to
the form (or close page or whatever).

This prevents multiple inputs on the data and doesn't rely on
javascript (which some users turn off). The bad part is from a server
side of things, this won't help with instances But people rarely hit
it a few times if more then once.

Might not help as some users turn off javascript. If you are serious
about not duplicating records, then you can't rely on client side
processing IMHO.

You need some logic on the server side of things.

Selecting text between text

2008-05-28 Thread Phillip Vector
Just curious... I'm a bit confused on how to do this and figured
someone else may have an idea (if not the code). Sorry if this sounds
disjointed. I still have yet to get my coffee this morning.

I have the following string...

This is a a href=http://www.foobar.com;Link/a to foobar.

I would like to pull out the HTML from this statement so that I have

This is a Link to foobar.

This will also allow me to make a forum widget that allows

[url]http://www.foobar.com[/url]

to change into

a href=http://www.foobar.com;Link/a

Any ideas how I can capture the text between the 's and/or the text
between the tags?

 You want a regular expression that will strip HTML tags. Personally, I'm no
 whiz with regular expressions; they give me a headache. However, if you
 Google regex strip html you'll find several viable options.

 In my case it was the person before me.

Gotta love developers like that. :)

It may save headaches later to instead of trying to code around it,
just make a new field that is date and write some code to basically
copy and paste from the bad field to the good field. Then remove the
old and change the name of the new one to match the old.

Probably about the same amount of work for the code and it makes sure
that if you need to do it in another area of the DB, it's already
fixed.

Rank names on Forums

2008-05-30 Thread Phillip Vector
I have a forum set up that I have various rank names based on the
number of posts a user enters.. The more posts, the better the rank..

At first, I used a cfswitch and counted that way. Unfortunately, I
realized that I would have to keep it up as more and more posts came
in (if it went over the maximum) and if I separated it out to include
a high maximum, I would still have issues as the spread between the
ranks would grow and grow (there are 9 ranks total) making progress to
the next rank harder and harder.

I then came up with an idea that I would get what percentage of posts
the user was responsible for and based on that precentage, it would
set the rank.

Someone just pointed out however that the same issue remains.. New
people would face harder and harder times getting rank as the posts
increased..

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how to combat this..

Yes, it removes that window, but I LIKE the filling in of the

Order by another query

I have a query that pulls all the top messages in a forum for each
area (So I have the thread titles).

I want to sort by the last posted, but it isn't working..

This is the code I came up with so far..

cfquery datasource=#datasource# name=AllMessages
select *
from forum_messages
where areaID = #session.areaID#
order by sticky DESC, Posted DESC
/cfquery

cfquery name=Messages dbtype=query
select *
from AllMessages

order by sticky DESC
/cfquery

Re: Order by another query

2008-06-02 Thread Phillip Vector
It only returned 1 record because (I would assume) that ThreadID would
be the last record once it reached there.

I worked around it though. When someone posts a message, I update the
first thread with the last posted date and sort on that. :) Feels a
little like a kludge, but it's clean enough for me to be comfortable
with it.

cfchart bar graph

Hi. I'm looking to make a simple bar that goes horozinitial from 0% to
100% with 1 break inbetween..

Kind of like this..

0%   75%  100%
[X ]

I looked at cfchart and I couldn't see how to get the single bar (much
less have a break point)..

Am I missing something? I push in the right direction would be appricated.

Ok... This looks promising.. Where would I put in the value of the bar?

I.e. if I have a max of 6 records and 2 are filled, where would I put the..

1) MaxRecords
2) FilledRecords

Is the z index on the progressbardisplay class the percentage it is
filled or is that the style tag for it on the div code?

 div class=progressBar align=left

div class=progressBarDisplay style=width:75%/div
/div
 /div

 The CSS looks like this:

 ..progressBar {
background-color: #EFEFEF;
border: 1px solid black;
height: 15px;
padding: 0px;
text-align: left;
width: 90%;
 }
 ..progressWrapper {
position: relative;
 }
 ..progressBarDisplay {
background-color: #66CC33;
height: 15px;
margin: 0px;
padding: 0px;
position: absolute;
text-align: left;
top: 0px;
z-index: 75;
 }

 This example is for a progress bar where the bar width is updated with
 javascript as stuff happens, but you get the idea.

Stored Procedure Not Working

2008-07-01 Thread Phillip Vector
I have a MS SQL database and I have a stored procedure I'm trying to
call with the following code..

cfset FutureTime=DateAdd('', 3, Now())
cfoutput#futureTime#/cfoutput

cfstoredproc procedure=GetDate dataSource=#datasource#
cfprocparam type=IN CFSQLType=CF_SQL_DATE value=#FutureTime#
dbVarName=@Future
cfprocparam type=IN CFSQLType=CF_SQL_VARCHAR
value=#session.UserID# dbVarName=@UserID

cfprocresult name=GetDate
/cfstoredproc

Here is the Stored Procedure

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[GetDate]
@UserID varchar(50),
@Future Datetime

AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON;

SELECT [DateTaken]
, [DateExpire]
from TestResults
Where UserID = @UserID
and DateExpire  @Future
Order by Score DESC

END

Here's the kicker... It works perfect on Firefox... IE and Opera, I
get the following coldfusion error...

Error Executing Database Query.
[Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]Error converting data
type varchar to datetime.

First of all... Wha???

Second of all, if there is error in the code, why isn't firefox having
a problem displaying it. My boss (who knows a bit about coldfusion
says that firefox may be ignoring the error But that doesn't seem
logical to me..

Can someone shed some light on this?

The value returned from the CheckPassword function is not of type query.

2008-07-07 Thread Phillip Vector
I have the following code..

cfinvoke  component=FHCcfc.Queries method=CheckPassword
returnvariable=Check/cfinvoke

in the cfc, I have..

cffunction name=CheckPassword returntype=query
cfstoredproc procedure=CheckPassword
dataSource=FoodHandlerCard
cfprocparam type=IN CFSQLType=CF_SQL_VARCHAR
value=#form.name# dbVarName=@Name
cfprocparam type=IN CFSQLType=CF_SQL_VARCHAR
value=#form.password# dbVarName=@Password
cfprocresult name=Check
/cfstoredproc
/cffunction

form.name and form.password are defined and when I put a cfdump
var=#check# before the function ends, I get back a query result. So
I know it's pulling up a query result.

So... Me being new to CFC's, why am I getting the error that it's not
returning a query when it seems to be doing so? I think it's creating
the query in the function, but then it isn't returning back to the
cfinvoke?

 correct. it's not returning anything. your cffunction needs to have
 a cfreturn / tag in it in order for it to return a value.

 in this case, cfreturn Check /, since you want the function to
 return the cf query object.

Re: CF with Javascript

2008-07-15 Thread Phillip Vector
Couldn't you make a Preload file that runs the JS code setting
everything else up before you run the body of the code?

 I'm working on a church site and there's some concern about the size of the

 I'm currently calling a javascript function in body onload which reads the
 screensize and sets a cookie for width and a cookie for height. CF then reads
 those cookies and adjusts table widths, cell widths and heights, picks which
 images to load (same image, two sizes), etc.

 Seems to be working except once in awhile the program doesn't seem to pick up
 a change in screen size until you do a reload. When I look at Google topics
 on body onload they say to me that there's no guarantee body onload will
 fire the javascript (and, in my case, set the cookies) before other parts of
 the page load and - in my case - some of the CF code starts running.

 Comments on that? Any ideas on how to better do this?

 FWIW, some pages have content that I force to a small screen size. Some pages
 have a lot of info and, for people with bigger monitors, it will be a benefit
 to take advantage of that increased real estate.
