Alternative to shared SMTP server

Maybe Amazon SES? I haven't used it in a CF project so I can't speak to that specifically, but I did use it in a Node.js project and it was a piece of cake. We use Mandrill, Very happy with it. Send grid et al does have a lot of useful extra features you won't get from a plain smtp server so depends what you need. The bounce tracking and reporting is very handy. We use it quite a bit. But we also host our CF infrastructure with Amazon, so it makes sense there.
