If you're willing to go with an IE-only solution, it's easy enough to
write your own. Go to msdn.microsoft.com and do a search for
"DHTMLEdit" (this control is built into IE)
ActivEdit is built around the DHTMLEdit functionality, as is ezEdit

from companies that they've never heard of - it's a paranoia thing

That may be true but considering that there are few number of people that
will actually be doing the editing and they only have to download the
plug-in once, its not that bad. When you edit a second time it's blazing
fast. The benefits far outweigh the time to download. It just requires

I've been converted to ezEdit. Free. Good. Displays a textarea if the
browser doesn't support what it needs.
