Subject: Pls forward: DevEng Journal looking for in-depth reviewers for
LMIC manuscripts

Dear colleagues,

The *Development Engineering* journal, run out of the Development Impact
Lab (DIL) at UC Berkeley, is interested in boosting publications from low-
and middle-income country (LMIC) authors by offering in-depth feedback on
promising manuscripts.

Right now, we are seeking an *engineering researcher with publication
experience** to provide in-depth review to an author from Nigeria*, for a
paper entitled "An Assessment of the Relative Importance of the Project
Management Practices for the Construction Industry in a Developing Country:
the Case of the Nigerian Construction Industry." As a reviewer, you will be
asked to read the selected manuscript (abstract below) along with DevEng
editorial board comments, and provide clear suggestions to the author
regarding how she or he can strengthen their chances of publication. We
anticipate that the engagement will involve 2-3 rounds of feedback, and
possibly a Zoom call to clarify what is meant by the feedback. We are
currently able to offer a modest incentive to reviewers in the form of a
$500 gift card.

*This study assessed the relative importance of the project management
practices of construction companies in a developing country using Nigeria
as a case study. Quantitative survey research approach was adopted for the
study with questionnaire as the primary instrument for data collection. Ten
registered indigenous construction companies in Nigeria were selected using
random sampling and a total of 250 project management professionals
comprising of civil and structural engineers, architects, quantity
surveyors and mechanical and electrical engineers were chosen to respond to
the level of importance of 53 project management practices selected from 9
project management areas for data collection. A total of 221 valid
responses were received from the respondents and the data collected was
analyzed using descriptive statistics in SPSS and the relative importance
index was calculated in Microsoft Excel. The result of the data analysis
indicated that only 22% of the respondents have at least a certification in
project management which implies a poor level of skillfulness in the
utilization of project management tools, methods and techniques in managing
their projects. The result also indicated that the respondents agreed that
the utilization of project management practices enhance project management
as indicated by the above average value of their relative importance.
However, it was found out that there was poor utilization of the tools
relating to budget management as indicated by the below average value of
the relative importance index.*

If you are interested in working with this author, please contact Samuel
Fishman at sfish...@berkeley.edu, with a sentence or two regarding your
qualifications (current status and affiliation, relevant research and
publication experience, interest in working with LMIC scholars).

Thank you for considering.

Best,

I want to invite you all, or anyone you know who might be interested, to
submit a paper to the second Workshop on Computing within Limits (LIMITS
'16). The workshop considers the role of and types of computing in society
when faced with, among other things, major ecological and energy
challenges. These two papers may help provide context:

http://www.ics.uci.edu/~wmt/pubs/CHI2012_Collapse.pdf

http://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2011/papers/greennet/p37.pdf

Here's a bit more info, and the workshop URL where there's a longer
description and a link to last year's papers:

http://acmlimits.org/2016/

LIMITS aims to foster research on the impact of present or future
ecological, material, energetic, and/or societal limits on computing and
computing research to respond to such limits. The medium-term aim of the
workshop is to foster concrete research, potentially of an
interdisciplinary nature, that innovates on technologies, techniques, and
contexts for computing within fundamental limits. A longer-term goal is to
build a community around relevant topics and research. A goal of this
community is to impact society through the design and development of
computing systems in the abundant present for use in a future of limits
and/or scarcity.

Paper submission deadline: February 29, 2016

availability of power and bandwidth.

The poster deadline for DEV 2015 is September 30th. Posters must not
exceed 2 pages and all submissions must be in ACM format, submitted as
a PDF. Submissions should be fully anonymised; In particular, the
names or affiliations of authors should not be included so as to allow
for blind review. Posters should be submitted via the submission site.
Posters should describe original and previously unpublished research,
innovative experiments, and work in progress. All DEV poster
submissions should either provide or directly motivate a novel
technical solution that has direct implications for development.

The topic of ICT for development is inherently multidisciplinary, and
encompasses a broad array of fields within the computer science
discipline. The ACM DEV conference is an opportunity for researchers
across these diverse fields of computer science to come together to
work on the common problem of improving access to and availability of
information and communication technology solutions. In an effort to
encourage participation of researchers across the relevant domains,
this year the conference focuses on research at the interface of
computer science and development related to (but not limited to) the
following non-exclusive focus areas:

Systems, including:
- Low-cost connectivity and computing devices
- Network solutions for poorly connected regions, including white space
spectrum

- Machine learning techniques for large-scale data analysis in
development contexts
- Speech interfaces and translation for low-resource languages
- Computer vision challenges and opportunities in development
- Understanding social networks and digital media in developing regions

In addition, we welcome posters outside of the above topics that
address the DEV focus on computing innovations supporting social and
economic development.

The accepted posters will be published in the companion conference
proceedings. The poster should be submitted using the submission
website at http://posters.acmdev.org

Dear Matt,

I hope this email finds you well.

I'm writing to forward you an event we're hosting at ITU with IDIN at MIT
https://d-lab.mit.edu/idin. It's a two week design summit focussed on
ICTs and we're going to be working with different sectors including health
and education. Participants come from all backgrounds (from Pol Sci to
Medicine), and don't necessarily need to be engineers. We're going to have
a scholarship application for selected participants that would cover part
(or in some cases all) of the cost of attendance based on need.

With our experience hosting the Pakistan ICTD workshop
http://itu.edu.pk/ictdworkshop2014/, and other international events,
we're very particular about logistics of the event, including participant
security. We're working with USAID Pakistan
http://tribune.com.pk/story/906491/development-partnership-support-for-intl-summit-pledged/
to make sure this is an amazing experience for all.

I'd be grateful if you could forward this opportunity to your networks in
Berkeley, including putting this up on TIER and CEGA mailing lists?. More
details can be found at: http://www.idds-lahore.com/faq/ or prospective
participants can contact us at: idds@mit.edu. Applications close in a
week!
Best Regards,
Mustafa
