Postdoc available at University of Washington
As part of a BMGF-funded project in Digital Financial Services, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of Washington is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate. The Digital Financial Services Research Group was formed to investigate technologies that will improve the ability of banks and mobile operators to deploy digital financial products that reach the poor. The research group is led by Professor Richard Anderson and includes Professors Yoshi Kohno, Franzi Roesner, and Kurtis Heimerl in Computer Science and Engineering, and Professor Josh Blumenstock in the School of Information. The project aims to develop and deploy technological solutions to specific challenges that impede the introduction and wide scale deployment of these financial products. Low profitability, lack of client demand, and the outright failure of many DFS launches can be traced back to difficult barriers and frictions that hinder the business model and scalability of DFS systems. Challenges that have been identified include fraud and cyberattacks, network failures, the proximity payments user experience, managing identity and on-boarding, the lack of analytics for product development and risk scoring, agent management, and financial education for end users. The Research Associate will conduct research and coordinate numerous activities for the research group. Activities include, but are not limited to: developing a toolkit that makes artifacts from this project available externally for additional testing and possible adoption, monitoring and coordinating student research projects, developing external partnerships, designing evaluation studies, writing research papers, and promoting the results of the project. The candidate must hold a PhD in Computer Science/Engineering or closely related field, ideally, with an emphasis on information and communication technologies for resource-constrained environments, or in lieu, thereof, a demonstrated interest in the discipline. The candidate should have a strong publication record with specific research experience in one or more of the following fields: Mobile Computing, Software Engineering, Computer Security, Human Computer Interaction, Data Science, Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICTD). The postdoc position is available September 1, 2016. This position could be an opportunity for a new PhD in a traditional area of computing, such as HCI or Security to begin work in ICTD, and could fit with career plans in either academia or the NGO sector.
