[Chat] tin box bumpout explained

2012-01-05 Thread Maya Kosok
Christine et al - This is my perhaps inaccurate language to describe the
old small closet-like boxes that stick out of the house in the back rooms
of some of these Charles Village homes. The first CV house I lived in the
closets had rusted out and that space had been cinderblocked over, but now
we have some that are still (mostly) intact. Is this more clear?? I guess
it's hard to describe. They are about 5' tall by 3' wide by 1' wide
(roughly) and stick out from the house. Ours are metal...

Anyway, looking for ideas on how to insulate them.

Thanks, -Maya

Re: [Chat] tin box bumpout explained

2012-01-05 Thread Paul Williams
We have two of these closets as well, but since they are in a rarely used
guest bedroom (that we don't heat in the winter), we haven't insulated them.
My dad would install a 1 inch thick Styrofoam sheet on the interior walls,
and then tape and cover the joints, and perhaps paint or paper the surface.
That should help much!

If you're talking about our front (and rear) bay window bump outs, they are
more tricky! I'm assuming you could insert some sort of spray insulation
into the (hollow) walls. We added rolled insulation underneath when we had
the front porch roof replaced, which has helped a lot. Since the floor is
always freezing there where the bay extends over the front porch, I drilled
about a half a dozen small holes in the floor between the joists just big
enough for the nozzle of one of those spray cans with expanding foam to fit,
and emptied the same number of cans underneath the floor: it has also helped
quite a bit.

They were original (and novel) closets installed when the house was built.
Ours match several interior closet configurations as well (that don't extend
on an exterior wall) with mirror panels on the french doors and a drawer
beneath.

2012-01-05 Thread John Spurrier
Linda,
The quality of their construction relative to so many other details led me to
believe they were an afterthought or an early 20th century home improvement,
but the fact that so many houses have them convinced me otherwise.

I have seen a few of the closets finished with vinyl siding which also allows
for some insulation panels to be placed on the exterior. In some cases the
closets have been abandoned altogether and replaced with glass blocks.

2012-01-05 Thread Jeanne Knight

I found the date and the signature of the cabinet maker in one of mine the day
I bought the house so I am certain it was original to the house in 1904.

Presently, one of them leaks from the top in certain rains and I need to find
someone to do a very small top repair. And, the outside was covered by another
metal and needs repairing so if you do know of someone interested in the work
let me know.

I recommend that homeowners ask their roofer to take a look at the tops of the
closets whenever they are having their roof coated, repaired or replaced.
