Presuming you want a limited number of complete directory tress, keep it
simple: rsync or scp
you can Google lots of examples
my preference is rsync and save the commands in a script
that way you can later reuse them (or reversed variants) to keep both sides
synchronized.

i was going to add krusader and mc to the list. krusader being a gui and
supports sftp , mc (midnight commander ) is a tui application.
you need ssh server installed, at least on the system you will be ssh-ing into,
i think the package will be called openssh-server , usually does not install by
If ssh is installed use sftp. FileZilla if you prefer a GUI. FileZilla supports
sftp.
Good for a one off transfer.

I have an urgent need for transferring some files to another country and could
do with some assistance. I have installed Ubuntu. The system can see the files
which are on a CD and could be copied to a directory. The machine is behind a
Dlink router where the virtual server ftp has been enabled
Your next step would be to setup an ftp server. Here is a howto:

Here are some other ideas for transfering files:
You can use an IM protocol. GAIM is a good client for this:
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/
You can use DCC over IRC. XChat is a good client:
FTP requires *both* ports 20 and 21
Having said that sftp is the the best bet, it works well behind NAT
routers, is
secure (no username/passwords transmitted in the clear)
Fyi, shaw does not block ftp. If you connect the ubuntu box directly to the
cable modem ftp will work, if the ftp server
