A few random comments:
-- No doubt about it, many normal humans percieve it to be difficult to
really dive into OS groups either due to lack of professional-looking
documentation, getting used to using mailing lists, not feeling they're
geeky enough to be worthy, whatever.  Overall we're still spotty at
presenting a really great user experience for the average human.  Much
better than even a year ago though!  But I could see this making
article writers think that women in particular would have a harder time
 breaking into OS communities.
