I worked for a meat company at one time and it was required of the company to
have a back flow preventer. I remember the preventer as being a small check
valve on each water pipe outlet which couldn't have cost more than $5.00 each.
Might pay to check into this.

I have been bombarded with grasshoppers numerous times over the years. I, also,
garden next to a field. What I have done that works for me is to apply
insecticide around your garden area out intol the open area and that gives a
barrier for your garden. Do this before they move into your garden.

It depends on what kind of thistles they have whether have underground
roots...the Canadian thistles does spread by underground roots and also by
seeds.

We use the white plastic milk jugs in this manner. They don't burn your plants
like clear plastic tends to do if the sun comes out hot.
