That method does work most of the time. It is not a good idea if the
compact is an SE or SE FDHD or SE/30 that has an external video card
installed as it could be damaged my the shock.

If you don't want to buy a new tool and have a set of allen wrenches,
you can use one that will fit the torx socket. It takes quite a bit
more work, but I was able to do it by turning, then lifting the small
wrench over and over with my fingerstook about 10 min.

I've been given a SE30. It powers on to a smiling Mac for a brief moment before
the smile goes away. The smile returns within a moment and then goes away again
and continues until I shut the unit down.
I presume the problem to be the hard drive trying to mount but failing. The next

The tool required is actually a long handled T-15
Torques driver, which the standard version is sold by
most hardware stores, although you may need 1 or 2
long extension pieces, also available there. I myself
ran into the same problem (I have almost 5 dozen
Toaster macs), and it does tend to be

Thanks for the T-15 info, Doug.
5 dozen Toaster macs? I don't have that many electrical outlets in my house.
I have a spare hard drive but will first try to find formatting software and
test the one installed.

I think someone at work still has floppy disks. I'll check into it tomorrow and
then grab 7.5.3 off the Apple site if able to get floppies. I had forgot until
you mentioned it.
