I foound an interesting historical document.

Emanuel Lasker (1868-1941) was Chess World Champion
from 1894-1921. He also learnt Go in 1907/08 from
his name sake Edward Lasker in Berlin. In his auto-
biography ("Chess Secrets", from 1951) Edward Lasker 
wrote this process, for a photo of the text see

So, Emanuel Lasker tried to learn the game in Zero-mode.
