I wonder if they match the first digits of the zip code. Sounds pretty close for the East Coast. Nope, most of the Atlantic states don't have the first digit as their respective zips. Besides ZipCodes weren't implemented until well after SS was established.

Yeah but the post office could just as easily followed the SSN scheme. The postal service used an entirely different scheme so that most of the information needed to route a letter or package was contained in the first three digits and even though it finally adopted a nine digit zip+4 scheme,
