While some will continue to defend MS's "stealth" patches, it is now revealed that sloppy programming creates a situation where the stealth patches block many (around 80) other patches to XP.
The problem happens if you reinstall XP and then try to run Windows Update. Apparently the stealth patches are installed first and these block the other patches.
