So what was the problem with the router?
I replaced it.
It is rare for such hardware to fail, but I do see it from time to time.

Our DSL connection has been miserable the last couple of weeks and has
now dropped to levels that make me pine for the good old days of dial up.
Simple web pages are taking minutes to load.

I still don't think any diagnostic should claim zero Kbps is

So with a lot of patience I managed to get to Verizon's Support page and
then to their DSL speed test.
