Last I heard it was not possible to check SMART via USB2 or 1394? eSATA will do it, but my own experiments with it show my Intel mobo won't hot swap! If Intel won't do it, who can one expect to (Nvidia, apparently). All drives should be checked regularly. I use a utility that tests SMART

Last I heard it was not possible to check SMART via USB2 or 1394? You are right. Can't get the SMART status through the FireWire interface. So my SMART utility is not polling my backup drive. One more reason my next set of drives will be eSATA.
