symlinked to that directory. Now it's in contrib/i586 and RPMS symlinks
to the i586 dir.

I have exactly the same sad freeze with an older Packard Bell iMedia.
With Mandrake 8.1 all work fine, but from Mandrake 8.2 to Mandrake 9.0 all freeze.
