Yes I use KDE and artsd. It never came to my mind to try with GNOME or some
other WM. Where do I see and set how does it start up?

I don't know if you can set it from the kde control center, but you may use
something like that :
killall -9 artsd; artsd -a -alsa

Do you use arstd ?
I had a similar problem and it works since I start artsd with -a alsa option.
Shouldn't alsa be the default i/o method for artsd ?
