ESD. And while ESD doesn't have code for specific sound cards in it. I
do believe it has code to determine the playback rate automatically.

devfs finds out about what hardware is present from the kernel and it

I don't think that's what he meant. A lot of cards have a disk with a
DOS utility on it that lets you set the IRQ and io ports on the card.
This is how the IRQ and io ports are changed on jumperless boards when
you want to use it with a non-PNP OS.
