I've got some users with some gigantic IMAP boxes. One of my users total
mail is 65GB. This user has a folder called Archive which from what I
can tell from ls -lh /var/vmboxes/user\@domain.com/.Archive/cur | wc -l

Sounds to me like the client's software keels over, keeping track of
all the
messages in the mailbox on the srver.
To get the user back online, perhaps you could jump onto the server,
maildirmake some
