10,000 ISRAELIS IN LARGEST PEACE DEMONSTRATION Posted By: Rosalinda Date: Wednesday, 13 February 2002, 10:33 a.m. [Source: Coalition of Women for a Just Peace, Feb. 10, 2002] 10,000 ISRAELI JEWS AND ARABS TAKE TO THE STREETS IN LARGEST PEACE DEMONSTRATION SINCE THE INTIFADA BEGAN. On Saturday night, February 9, 10,000 Israeli Jews and Arabs filled Museum Square in Tel Aviv. Although a similar demonstration held one year ago drew only a few hundred, the now famous letter of refusal by reserve soldiers and officers has remoralized the peace movement. This was despite the fact that Peace Now, the largest and best-financed of the peace groups, refused to endorse the demonstration, which was sponsored by 28 peace groups, including Gush Shalom. The mass turnout followed the publication of several large, paid peace advertisements in the Israeli daily Ha'aretz. One such ad was placed by Yesh Gvul, an organization which supports conscientious objectors. Another was by a group of private citizens and had the headline, "We support the soldiers who refuse to serve the occupation," and one by Gush Shalom declaring, "Peres, you are a collaborator in war-crimes." Furthermore, on February 8, the mass-circulation daily Yediot Ahronot published a survey showing that 26% of the Israeli public sympathizes with the reserve soldiers' letter. This, even though their action is seen as controversial even within the peace camp. The demonstration was addressed by such well-known Israeli peace activists as Uri Avnery, who declared, "I once disagreed with refusal to serve in the army, but today I salute those who will not serve. Refusal is the beginning of the end of occupation." Others included Shulamit Aloni, former minister and former head of the Meretz party, who declared to the demonstrators, "All of you here today are the harbingers of a mass movement that already has begun. You will be the teachers of democracy to this government. You will set an example of morality. We shall clean out the crimes of this country and fill it with peace." The most well-received speaker was Yishai Rosen-Zvi, an Orthodox tank corps sergeant in the reserves, who had spent time in prison for his refusal. He told the demonstrators, "How can we serve in an army that kills children? How can we serve an army that demolishes homes, does not allow the sick to get medical attention, seeks to humiliate an entire population and reduces them to hunger and poverty?" The atmosphere was such that the famous Zionist song, Ein li eretz Aheret was sung, in both Hebrew and Arabic, because its words, which are as follows capture the imagination not only of the Jews but the Arabs as well, since it is their land also: "I have no other country to go to. And even if the land is burning under my feet, this is my home." [Source: Ha'aretz, Feb. 12, 2002] ISRAELI RESERVE SOLDIERS TO HOLD FIRST MEETING. The Israeli reserve soldiers' signers group (refusing service in the occuppied territories), is to hold its first meeting Tuesday, February 12. They will discuss what action they should take, now that they have gathered 230 signatures, a number that is increasing every day.
