"Billionaires For Bush (Or Gore)" is a participatory mass media stunt that humorously exposes how Big Money has stolen our democracy and distorted national priorities to serve corporate power. This summer, we're calling for a "Million Billionaire March" at both the Republican and Democratic conventions, as well as a variety of smaller group visibility/guerrilla activities at receptions, dinners, etc. We'll be building up towards these mobilizations with a full blown campaign, that includes: events, buttons, bumper stickers, posters, a theme song, a website, and maybe even a TV spot. We're hoping that the Billionaires can help to provide an integrating frame for the convention mobilizations so that instead of looking like a fragmented circus of groups fighting for air time, we come across as a cohesive rainbow united by a common desire to reclaim our democracy and society from the grip of big money and the corporations. At United for a Fair Economy, we've been doing the Billionaires in various incarnations for a number of years now. Some of you may have heard of our media- jacking of Steve Forbes' presidential campaign announcement in NH, or seen us in suits & top-hats working the crowd at the A16 march and rally. This summer a host of groups are taking the concept to new heights. The proposal is circulating and picking up steam. We're eager for your ideas, participation and collaboration. We're in the process of putting together a Do-It- Yourself Billionaires action kit, to be distributed to activists all over the country. DIY actions ideas include putting on a "Rally for the Really Rich" or staging a "Tax Loophole Protection Day" or giving out "Silver Spoon Awards" to local companies who receive corporate welfare, or doing "Billionaire Barbecues" on July 4, and a whole lot more. The Billionaires is a versatile and robust vehicle. It's an easy concept for participants to grab a hold of and use in their own creative ways. It has been used successfully to advocate for campaign finance reform, domestic economic equality and global economic justice. The clever humor of Billionaires plays well in the media. Even if the media butchers the story, the campaign title, "Billionaires For Bush (Or Gore)" communicates the core message. In 5 words it not only makes people laugh but makes two very profound arguments: 1) Big Money owns the candidates, and 2) whichever candidate wins, Big Money wins. Some of the grass-roots publicity for the campaign will be accomplished through our exciting new PosterNation project, which is just getting off the ground. PosterNation uses the web to coordinate decentralized poster teams to put up a similar set of posters all across the country on the same day. The key poster for the campaign is an image that digitally morphs together the faces of Bush and Gore, with text underneath the face that reads "Gush Bore 2000." The image itself causes a provocative uncomfortableness, eerily resembling both but also neither candidate, and evoking the generic face of entrenched power. United for a Fair Economy has offered some resources and staff time to coordinate the campaign, including media, web maintenance, materials production, and mobilizing our network of volunteers and performers. We are looking for additional financial and organizing support and pursuing collaboration with other groups including Public Campaign, Direct Action Network, Reclaim the Streets, Global Exchange (& caravan partners), the Kensington Welfare Rights Union, and US PIRG.
