Luis Gutierrez left federal prison Tuesday, three days after his arrest for trespassing during U.S. Navy bombing exercises on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques. The Illinois Democrat posted the required $900 of his $3,000 bail and was released from a federal detention center outside San Juan. He was expected to be back in Chicago by evening, said Gutierrez spokesman Billy Weinberg. More than 160 protesters have been arrested since Friday, when the Navy resumed bombing exercises on the island. They face charges of trespassing on federal property. Among the first released Monday were high-profile protesters, including environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Mexican-American actor Edward James Olmos, New York labor leader Dennis Rivera and Puerto Rico opposition Sen. Norma Burgos. Gutierrez was the last of the protesters to appear before a federal magistrate Monday night, Weinberg said.
