The Arab Program for Human Rights Activists

Calls for a Committee to Protect Anti Iraq-War Activists

As a result of the turbulent political climate in the Arab region, the continuous American pressures on the international community to adopt war against Iraq,  the massive US military presence in the Gulf region -which will enable the United States to wage a unilateral war if it serves its interests-and in light of universal popular rejection of American hegemony which goes beyond the limits of international law and political conventions , we find that   Arab security agencies are actively arresting anti war activists. This comes while the American public itself and many others are allowed to practice freedom of opinion and expression by demonstrating against this war.

Moreover, these security agencies increasingly arrest more activists according to emergency laws that are applied in most Arab countries.   The Arab Program for Human Rights, APHRA, notes that these waves of arrests are continuously increasing with the heating up of events on the Arab and international scenes.

Therefore, APHRA calls on all the  political, legal and  syndical  forces in addition to lawyers and journalists to form a committee to protect the detained anti Iraq- war activists. The Committee should focus on following the cases of the detained from all aspects, legally defending them before court, working for their release, and launching media support campaigns.
