Perle Attacks Chirac as Pro-Saddam by: Jason P Taverner Republicons.org 3/13/2003 The Bush administration has resorted to name calling in its attempt to sway international opinion on its desire to invade Iraq. US defense advisor and the sharpest billed hawk Richard Perle said in a radio interview yesterday that “France has aligned itself with Saddam”. He failed to note that it was the US not France that had embraced Saddam as an international partner in 1980’s in his war against Iran. Perle is head of the US Defense Department Policy Review Board, which has an influential advisory function but no official role in formulation of U.S. government policy. "[French] President [Jacques] Chirac has said Saddam Hussein was his friend -- a friend, one of the most brutal dictators in this world?" said Perle. "We never called him a friend." He was referring to the early 1980s when France, the United States and the rest of the Western allies backed Iraq in a war with neighbor Iran. The latter assertion is patently false as recently declassified State Department documents show. In his December 1983 meetings with Tariq Aziz US envoy Donald Rumsfeld made many statements supporting Iraq in its war with Iran and promised US diplomatic assistance in the international community. Rumsfeld, furthermore, told Aziz that “relations between our countries are important there are more similarities than differences.” So Perle has sacrificed US integrity to support his ad hominem assault on Chirac. The French position has not been pro-Saddam but has been, as clarified yesterday by Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin. “It is not a question of giving Iraq a few more days before resorting to force, but to go forward resolutely along the path of peaceful disarmament laid down by the inspections which are a credible alternative to war,” he said in response to the British call for a new UN resolutions leading to war.
