Shots Fired Near Governor's Mansion in Austin
by Mack White

Capitol Police say a San Antonio man nearly ran down two officers with his pickup near the Governor's Mansion early Saturday morning.

Republican presidential nominee George W. Bush was in the mansion when the incident occurred. However, Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange said Bush was in no danger.

The incident began just before 1 a.m. at the intersection of 11th and Lavaca Streets, where Capitol Police officers Jose Ramirez and Brian Baxter were on foot patrol. They say they saw Todd Nathaniel Woerner, 25, driving his truck erratically, and that when they attempted to flag him down with their flashlights, Woerner headed towards Guadalupe Street.

On Guadalupe Street, he began to make a U-turn, repeatedly striking a concrete planter. Another Capitol officer drew his gun and ordered Woerner to stop.

At this point Woerner allegedly drove toward Ramirez and Baxter, who were standing in the middle of the street, forcing them to jump out of the road. The officers fired five rounds, striking the truck at least once.

Moments later, Austin police arrested Woerner outside his truck in the 1200 block of Angelina Streets. Authorities said Woerner appeared drunk, but Mange said she does not think police requested a Breathalyzer.

Woerner is being held on a public intoxication charge, pending approval of attempted capital murder charges.
