The Sleep Room's Missing Memories by Ray Conlogue Quebec Arts Correspondent,
Montreal "A new CBC [Canadian Broadcasting Corporation] miniseries tells how
mental patients in Montreal were once subjected to CIA-sponsored
brainwashing. It's a story worth telling, but some fear that making it into a
TV drama may simplify the complex issues behind this shameful bit of Canadian
history....recalls a series of barbaric experiments conducted on mental
patients over a nine-year period beginning in 1955. Although these began as a
well-meaning if desperate attempt to cure schizophrenia, the "psychic
driving" technique invented by psychiatrist Ewen Cameron took on a
science-fiction quality when it was revealed in 1977 that the Central
Intelligence Agency had helped finance the work. The CIA thought it had
potential as a brainwashing technique to be used on "enemies" of the United
States during the Cold War....a human catastrophe that stripped more than 300
people of their identities....she sued Ottawa instead, and forced the
government to pay $100,000 to each surviving Allan patient."

We won't deny our consciences - Prominent Americans have issued this
statement on the war on terror Friday June 14, 2002 The Guardian

Let it not be said that people in the United States did nothing when their
government declared a war without limit and instituted stark new measures of
repression.

The signers of this statement call on the people of the US to resist the
policies
and overall political direction that have emerged since September 11, 2001,
and which pose grave dangers to the people of the world. We believe that
peoples and nations have the right to determine their own destiny, free from
military coercion by great powers. We believe that all persons detained or
prosecuted by the US government should have the same rights of due process.
We believe that questioning, criticism, and dissent must be valued and
protected. We understand that such rights and values are always contested and
must be fought for.

We believe that people of conscience must take responsibility for what their
own governments do - we must first of all oppose the injustice that is done
in our own name. Thus we call on all Americans to resist the war and
repression that has been loosed on the world by the Bush administration. It
is unjust, immoral, and illegitimate. We choose to make common cause with the
people of the world....

NSA INTERCEPTED 9/11 MESSAGES ON 9/09 - NOT TRANSLATED TIL 9/12

U.S. Intelligence Intercepted Messages Day Before Sept. 11
By REUTERS

1. WASHINGTON - U.S. intelligence intercepted two messages the day before the
Sept. 11 attacks that indicated an event was planned the following day, but
the communications were not translated until Sept. 12, government sources
said Wednesday. The sources said the National Security Agency, which
eavesdrops on communications worldwide, intercepted the messages saying,
"tomorrow is zero day" and "the match begins tomorrow." The sources,
speaking on condition of anonymity, said the agency did not translate the
messages until Sept. 12 -- the day after hijacked airliners smashed into
New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon killing about 3,000 people
in a plot believed hatched by Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.

The intercepted messages gave no details of the time, location or nature of
the event that was to take place and it was not clear what language the
communications were in. The NSA handles a huge volume of intercepted
communications traffic from around the world in many different languages. One
U.S. intelligence source said no action could have been taken on the basis of
such vague messages. "Sometimes we get the ambient noise and background
chatter. You don't know who is talking," the source said. "Is there
actionable intelligence in this? Absolutely not. This is not a smoking gun."
U.S. intelligence agencies, including the FBI and the CIA, have been strongly
criticized by Congress and the media for failing to pick up on a number of
warning signs before the attacks.

The CIA - America's Premier International Terrorist Organization
"ClA-supported Mujahedeen rebels [now, 2001, part of the "Northern Alliance"
fighting the Taleban] engaged heavily in drug trafficking while fighting
against the Soviet-supported government and its plans to reform the very
backward Afghan society. The Agency's principal client was Gulbuddin
Hekmatyar, one of the leading druglords and a leading heroin refiner.
CIA-supplied trucks and mules, which had carried arms into Afghanistan, were
used to transport opium to laboratories along the Afghan/Pakistan border. The
output provided up to one half of the heroin used annually in the United
States and three-quarters of that used in Western Europe. U.S. officials
admitted in 1990 that they had failed to investigate or take action against
the drug operation because of a desire not to offend their Pakistani and
Afghan allies."
