MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) - It was business as usual Tuesday at the Monaco
branch of the Republic National Bank of New York underneath the gutted
shell
of a penthouse where billionaire banker Edmond Safra died last week in an
arson attack.

But one day after American nurse Ted Maher was charged with starting the
blaze, mystery still surrounded events leading up to the Lebanese-born
financier's death in the luxury seaside building.

Did Safra really refuse to leave a locked bathroom where he then suffocated
despite pleas by his wife and firemen that he should come out?

And how did Maher, 41, described as mentally unstable, penetrate the inner
circle of a powerful banker who was so concerned about his safety that he
routinely recruited his bodyguards from Israel's elite security services?

``It's true that everyone still has many questions - the prosecutor, too,''
said Alexander Bruggmann, a spokesman for the Republic Bank in Geneva,
Switzerland. ``But it's now a police matter.''

On Tuesday, police and prosecutors would not comment on the case. After a
flurry of news conferences, Monaco reverted to official silence.

The nurse, Ted Maher, 41, first claimed that two hooded men had burst into
the penthouse before dawn Friday, attacked him, then set the deadly blaze.
He
was treated at hospital for two stab wounds.

But on Monday with no evidence to support his version - and police patience
dwindling - Maher, who was just about to be released from the hospital,
confessed to inventing the whole scenario, said Monaco's chief prosecutor,
Daniel Serdet.

There had been no break-in, Maher said, according to Serdet. He stabbed
himself, and then started the fire that killed Safra and another American
nurse, Viviane Torrent, who also hid in the bathroom.

Maher said he didn't want to kill Safra: instead he was convinced he would
emerge the hero who rushed his employer to safety in a bathroom while
fending
off the attackers. He set the fire to make the scene even more dramatic, he
told investigators.

He was charged with arson, jailed, and faces a life term.

Despite the confession, it could be months - if not longer - before the
many
questions are answered.

Investigators say Safra was paralyzed by fear and refused to come out of
the
locked bathroom, even though it was filling with smoke and firemen and his
wife were telling him it was safe to come out.

But a source with detailed knowledge of the case said that version was
``totally untrue.'' Safra had called police twice while coughing in the
smoke-filled bathroom and begged them to get him out, the source said.

An investigator in the Monaco prosecutor's office said Safra did call
police
once to alert them to a break-in, but denied the fire had already started.

Secondly, could the firefighters have acted more quickly to extinguish the
fire, which started in a paper-filled wastebasket and devastated the whole
top floor?

Finally, it remained unclear how Maher, who Serdet said was mentally
unstable
and took large doses of sedatives, could have got through security vetting.

Security was not something Safra took lightly.

His penthouse overlooking the Mediterranean was fortress-like, with
bulletproof doors and windows. Surveillance cameras were posted inside and
outside the building.

Reports have said Safra's security chief, absent at the time of the attack,
was Israeli-trained and that the banker had been protected by former
Israeli
security agents since 1985.

Prosecutors said security was so tight at the penthouse that confident
Safra
had instructed his chief guard to remain at his other residence: a
high-walled villa on the Cote d'Azur, once used as a summer home by Belgian
royalty.

The broader issue here is how the internet could be used for mind control

Sorry-I didn't get the title down. All I have is that it is explicitly on
the theme of conspirators using internet to control the planet, Monday at
9:00 PM in Vancouver on Channel 8. Rogers might tell you more via

   Now I'm not saying Wes Thomas IS such a conspirator but his moderating
"style" has certainly left some of us wondering if he couldn't be used at
least as a case study in how this might be done via discussion lists.
He has trotted out all the usual lines to defend his restrictions on
discussion, eg (1) these lists are MY private property and I'll do what I
want; (2) what I don't like is "off topic"; (3) if you challenge or
question that you are "threatening" me and you are "flaming" me; (4) if
you bring this up on other lists where I (Wes) am an ordinary subscriber
you are "spamming" and violating "netiquette". Finally he has complained
to my webmaster knowing that there are local politics in ISP services and
he might well put a stop to any exposure of what he is up to by getting
ISP service discontinued.
   Of course list ownership is a reality and netiquette and spamming are
realities. But the issue is how these things could be put forward to
carefully regulate discussion on the internet and a substantial part of
human thinking, attitudes and opinions. Could the mindcontrol agencies
like CIA/NSA etc. use a Wes Thomas in this way? Definitely. Consider that
the three lists I have been on all cover topics of great military
significance: Mind Control; Electronic Warfare and Biowarfare. Now,
sometimes I can be off topic like anyone else and I have moderated a half
dozen lists so I know that you have to "call" people for being off topic.
But I was first called for being off-topic on Biowar when I said that the
religious issues and Biblical references in connection with them were
crucial in understanding what might motivate biowar. Indeed that got me
turfed off. It is most emphatically NOT off topic. But it is a very
"sensitive" as well as important issue-the kind that CIA/NSA types want to
keep in THEIR control and do not want us unwashed masses to deal with.
Also what about the "Green Conspiracy" which I posted to Thomas'
Mindcontrol list and which was called off-topic? I was asked on
snetnews/lj what my references were for saying that one-third of the
planet had been mapped by the ultra-rich for wilderness set-asides as sort
of a "private country" of huge proportions. Good question: always get
those facts shored up. The kind of facts that the mind contollers don't
want you to have.
   I had to go back a decade in my notes for this. In the late 1980's a
Colorado businessman/activist named George Hunt lectured in Vancouver. He
had been a host at the "Fourth World Wilderness Conference" in Boulder in
1987. The Green billionaires of the planet were there: Rockefellers,
Rothschilds etc. Hunt had the tapes and literature including their map of
the planet with 1/3 of its area in wilderness set asides. Hunt's address
then was 95 camino Bosque, Boulder, Co. 80302. You can get similar
information from the LaRouchies and aside from their prone-ness to
unsubstantiated exaggeration I think they have this one right. I asked
Hunt about his connection to the LaRouchies and in general he seemed to be
mildly anatagonistic to

   My point is that we are already submitting ourselves to the NWO

 has come up with plans to have 48 percent of America to be "human free."
 One of the people was interviewed said that they realized that their goal
 will not happen in the short term, but in the long term over 25-40 years
 (2030-2040)  they will accomplish their goal.Well you ask, how would
 they do that, after all the American public would rise up and fight?  No
 they wouldn't because it was done gradually.
   Years ago I lived in the Mojave Desert in California.  My family and I
 did all the outdoors kind of stuff, and fought like hell to prevent the

 from grabbing our land.  So called patriots at the time said "well it

 here...blah blah blah.  I moved away  20 years ago, and within the past 5

 many of the areas I traveled through/on are now fenced off wilderness.

 in Calif fought the battle and lost and have moved on with their lives.

 late people
 that I know down there say that the land that is actually open for use,

 being used
 so heavily, it is unbelievable.  Guess what is going to be closed next,
using
 the
 justification that the land is being damaged blah blah.
   The people that peddled the wilderness areas in the first place had the
goal
 of sealing
 off the entire desert BUT they couldn't do it all at once, so they do it
piece
 meal
 and get everything they want over a period of 20 years.
   Our farmers have to submit any trade dispute through NAFTA/GATT.
 Anytime you ship a "hazardous material", motor oil, hair spray, lube
 etc, you submit to NWO regulations.When the US shipping regs are
 changed to the "international" shipping regs, everytime we ship something
 we are submitting ourselves to the NWO.
As long as change comes gradually, people as a whole will not rise up

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Elizabeth Dole is planning to step aside as
president
of the American Red Cross in a step her political supporters hope will lead
to her running for president, Newsweek magazine reported.

The magazine reports in its Jan. 11 edition, portions of which were
released Sunday, that one of Mrs. Dole's close advisers described her
decision as a ``first step'' toward a possible campaign for the Republican
nomination, but also called it a ``nonpolitical event.''

Red Cross officials would not confirm the report but announced late
Sunday that Mrs. Dole would make a ``major'' announcement Monday at 2 p.m.
EST in Washington.

Newsweek had reported that she was expected to meet over the weekend
with the executive committee of the Red Cross prior to a Monday
announcement
of her plans.

Mrs. Dole's husband, former Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas, was the GOP
presidential nominee in 1996 and she has consistently scored high in public
opinion polls as a potential candidate.

Earl Cox, national campaign manager of Draft Elizabeth 2000, declined
to
say whether he knew anything about Mrs. Dole leaving the Red Cross. ``If
indeed that is the situation, it's encouraging,'' he said.

Cox added that he plans to be in Washington on Monday before spending
the rest of the week in Vermont and New Hampshire to campaign for the Dole
draft movement.

I am watching Larry King interview his three septagenarian guests
(Carter, Downs, Graham) but I don't see a-call in number so I'll email
this. Which of your guests met Walt Disney when he was alive and what is
their opinion of Disney's plan to make EPCOT a model city for typical
Americans?
   IMO America would be twice the country it is today if Disney had lived
10 years longer because of EPCOT.

Some Y2K leadership finally appears from a bureaucrat: Gwyneth
Flower, the head of the British government's millennium bug
Taskforce 2000, has now advised people to plan ahead. She's
quoted in the story as saying, "We are talking about people
having a judicious amount of surplus food in their kitchen
cupboards."

FLOWER CALLS PLANS 'SENSIBLE'
"Anyone sensible would plan for this. Because we don't want to
see panic buying in the weeks leading up to next Christmas,
consumers should think about this in advance," Flower said.

Remember that in the United States, government officials are
calling preparedness, "disruptive" and one person from the
GartnerGroup calls preparations, "unnatural." There has been
absolutely no government-sponsored call for the public to prepare
here in the United States. And actions that are considered,
"sensible" in the U.K. are considered "unnatural" in the United
States.

What's going on here?

WE'VE ELECTED A BUNCH OF COWARDS
An utter lack of leadership, that's what's going on here. Our
government leaders are scared silly about acknowledging the Y2K
problem is real. So instead of demonstrating real leadership,
they'll wait until the problem gets *really* bad, when almost
nobody has a realistic chance of actually being able to get
prepared. Then they'll claim they had no way of knowing it was
this bad. It's classic bureaucratic behavior: keep the
information from the American people, then blame "radicals" for
the panic.

With the U.K. now calling on its citizens to hoard food, and
with the Canadian government now pondering Martial Law (see story
below), the United States government has done virtually nothing.
Clinton is all but silent on the issue, and Congress is too busy
Impeaching Clinton to look at Y2K. At the same time, John
Koskinen, Clinton's Y2K czar, offers no reasonable preparation
advice for American citizens, working instead to "alleviate fear"
rather than tell people the truth about what they should be doing
right now.

THE GREATEST GOVERNMENTAL BLUNDER IN HISTORY
Y2K is shaping up to be exactly that: the worst mistake the
American government has ever made. While they squabble over
impeachment and political power, the infrastructure of government
threatens to collapse all around them. Only Senator Bennett has
spoken loudly about what's going on here, and even he has
recently tamed-down his rhetoric, likely out of concern of
"scaring" people.

Everybody is afraid of scaring people. But they're not afraid of
leaving people in the dark. Why is that?

PAPER SAYS, 'START HOARDING NOW'
This Observer report says, "Britons have been warned to stock up
with two weeks' emergency food rations in anticipation of
millennium bug-related shortages."

It goes on to mention that people should prepare for the
worst-case scenario: "In an unprecedented statement indicating
the level of panic in official circles, the Department of Trade
and Industry-funded task force, charged with minimising potential
damage caused by the bug, has said that contingency planning for
a worst-case scenario should start as soon as possible."

In this story, Flower is quoted as saying, "Because we don't
want to see panic buying in the weeks leading up to next
Christmas, consumers should think about this in advance."

THIS IS PRECISELY THE POINT CLINTON DOESN'T UNDERSTAND
Why can't U.S. officials get this? This quote from Flower hits
the nail on the head: you have to warn people EARLY and encourage
preparedness actions EARLY in order to avoid the panic.

Clinton and Koskinen don't see it that way. They think that
covering it up for as long as possible is the best strategy.
Delay, delay, delay. They apparently hope the problem can be
covered up indefinitely.

WHY DID FLOWER ISSUE THE WARNING?
According to the story, "...it has now emerged that large
numbers of government, utilities and corporate computer systems
that control every aspect of our lives will not be ready for the
turn of the century."
