[CTRL] Fiber's Effect on a Cancer Risk Questioned
Fiber's Effect on a Cancer Risk Questioned By David BrownWashington Post Staff WriterThursday, January 21, 1999; Page A3 Eating a diet high in fiber doesn't lower a woman's risk of developing cancer of the colon or the rectum, according to research published today. A study of 88,000 women, whose health and diets were followed for 16 years, found that those who ate a relatively small amount of fiber had the same risk of colorectal cancer as those eating more than twice as much. The theory that diets high in fiber protect against colorectal cancer was first seriously propounded 30 years ago. Fiber is the structural material of plants that can't be absorbed by the human digestive tract. Contrary to many public perceptions, however, evidence for the theory has been sketchy at best. My own conclusion is that if one is concerned about preventing colon cancer, I'm not sure that [consuming] fiber is an effective method, said Charles S. Fuchs, a physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, who headed the study. But there are many other potentially effective ways to do that. Exercise lowers the risk for colon cancer, as does the regular use of aspirin. Eating red meat tends to raise it. There is some evidence that obesity, as well as consumption of fat and sugar, also raises the risk. As with most epidemiological studies, it's impossible to say with certainty whether these results are correct. A more definitive test of the theory is to randomly assign people to follow either a low-fiber diet or a regular diet, and then observe them for cancer. At least two such studies are underway. Previous studies have shown that high-fiber diets help protect against coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and a relatively rare disease of the colon called diverticulitis. I think it's still important to eat a high-fiber, low-fat diet, said Robert Kurtz, chief of the gastroenterology and nutrition service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. I think we'll all be healthier for that. Will it protect against colon cancer? We don't know yet. Colorectal cancer is the third most common form of cancer, in terms of new cases and deaths, in the United States. Colon cancer is more common than rectum cancer, and accounts for 85 percent of colorectal cancer deaths. The findings, published in today's New England Journal of Medicine, came from the Nurses' Health Study, which has regularly queried about 121,000 American nurses (starting in 1976), and then monitored their health. In 1980, 1984 and 1986, the women filled out questionnaires in which they estimated how frequently in the previous year they ate dozens of different foodstuffs. The amount of fiber, and many other nutrients, in each woman's daily diet was then calculated. (The researchers compared the data with actual measurements of the foods consumed -- measurements that a small subgroup of women did for a month. The questionnaire proved to be an adequate, although not perfect, method of gauging actual intake.) The women were then divided into five groups. The group with the lowest intake consumed about 10 grams of fiber a day, the group with the highest consumed about 25 grams. By 1996, there were 787 cases of colon or rectum cancer among the women. There was no significant difference in the rates of cancer between any of the groups. The researchers made statistical adjustments to compensate for other possible risk factors, such as physical activity, alcohol intake and fat consumed. There was also no relationship between fiber intake and the development of adenomas, the type of colon polyp from which nearly all cancers arise. Although the study involved only women, previous research had raised questions about whether fiber reduced the risk for colorectal cancer in men, the researchers said. Screening for colon polyps or cancers is the most certain way of reducing one's risk of dying from the disease. People whose colorectal cancers are discovered before they experience any symptoms have a 90 percent chance of living five years. If the cancers are found only after they have become large enough to cause symptoms, the five-year survival rate drops to about 50 percent. Although the salutary effects of raw vegetables and fruits have been mentioned since ancient times, the theoretical link between fiber and colon cancer was first suggested in 1969 by a British surgeon named Denis Burkitt. A Presbyterian medical missionary who spent two decades in Uganda, Burkitt noted the extreme rarity of colon cancer among his African patients. He theorized that their high-fiber diets were the reason. Subsequently, researchers theorized that fiber might protect against cancer by neutralizing cancer-causing substances in the digestive system or by speeding the digestive process, reducing exposure to those substances. [CTRL] Gregory Craig: Notes on Arguments
Gregory Craig: Notes on White House Special Counsel Arguments by Hilary A. Thomas Day Two of defense arguments continue to be weak but we have a lot more details. There appear to be several major strategies for the defense: If President Clinton didnt obstruct justice he didnt commit perjury; fair due process was not given to the President in the Articles of Impeachment; Oath Vs Oath; private Vs official; Separation of Opinion from fact and/or reason; and a continuation of separation of the man from the presidency. There were many points made by Mr. Craig but, I will highlight a few: Craig talked in terms of Beyond a Reasonable Doubt as if it were an established fact that this is the measure by which the Senate will rule. Smooth. One point for Craig. The proposal that if Clinton didnt obstruct justice he didnt commit perjury is an intriguing strategy. Most of the obstruction charges (if not all) relate to the Paula Jones case. Craig also emphasized that perjury charges in the Jones case had been thrown out of the House and therefore should not be addressed by the House Managers at this time. Therefore, if Craig can get the triers to dismiss the evidence of the Jones case, the obstruction evidence will subsequently be dismissed. If we continue with Craigs strategy and there is no obstruction of justice there is no perjury. Nice plan. One point for Craig. However, Im not ready to throw out perjury and obstruction of justice charges at this time. Throughout his argument there is an attempt to separate Clintons opinion from fact and/or reason. If we agree to this separation then Clinton isnt accountable because it is his opinion and we can not convict anyone for having an opinion. This is, after all, America. Yesterdays argument separated the man from the presidency where we could condemn the man but not the President. However, since these many statements were merely Clintons opinions it looks like we cant condemn the man either. Nice try but, I happen to believe that people are accountable for their actions, thoughts and yes, even their opinions. Craig spent a considerable amount of time arguing that due process was not fair for Clinton in that the articles of impeachment were vague and summarized. Given this, President Clinton could not mount an effective defense for he was not provided the information he needed. He furthered his argument by stating that this vagueness gave too much authority to the Senate when it is the responsibility of the House to impeach. Ill agree with the former part of this argument in that it does have merit but, the latter part of this argument isnt really germane to the case as it is one of procedure. The Senate does try a President at this stage so the trial really hasnt been affected by an increase of authority to the Senate. Furthermore, the House did impeach the President and not the Senate so, the argument falls apart at this point. Craig stated that the Managers covered information not addressed in the House impeachment trial and that this is unacceptable. This is standard practice in legal proceedings. The Managers didnt go outside the records and both counsels had access to the same materials. Its call doing ones homework. Craig stated that Clinton had been evasive with the Jones deposition but this didnt count because the House had rejected this case. In his testimony to the Grand Jury he had been truthful. (more about this later) Craig introduced the idea of Oath Vs Oath stating that the Supreme court had ruled that a case shouldnt be tried if only based on this. Craig dashed over the word ONLY rather quickly but did stress the words Supreme Court. The evidence of the prosecution does rely heavily on Monicas testimony but not entirely. He went on later to say that Oath Vs Oath cases are never tried in the real world. On what planet? He Said, She Said cases fill our courts daily and it is in the court that the truth is determined. A video of Richard Davis (former Watergate investigator) was shown stating that, and Im paraphrasing, that perjury charges must not be brought against an individual if only two people are involved basically in a He Said, She said situation. Actually, there are other witness but, if they are not allowed to testify then yes, this would be mostly about two people. The phrase on certain occasions was addressed as not perjurious or a direct lie regarding sexual encounters or telephone calls. Monica also described these as occasional. Actually, I have to agree with the defense on this one. It was a weak argument by the prosecution. One point for Craig. The prosecution also claimed the Clinton was lying because he stated that he talked about encounters with Monica in 1996 and 1997 but not in 1995. The significance of 1995 is that is when she was an intern and I suppose the argument has more cache if she is a lowly intern rather than gainfully employed. It is a minor point and Im even

He said it was the largest he had ever seen and it was in broad daylight between 4:30PM and 5:00PM CST. It was as large as his fist on his extended arm. The body of this fireball itself was a brilliant white color and it had a red and green tail. It was travelling from north to south and was about 45 degrees above the horizon. He also said that while it did appear to be falling, it was still travelling in a more straight forward than downward direction. [CTRL] Ruff At His Best?
I just finished watching the opening defense arguments by White House Counsel Charles Ruff. All I can say is if Ruff were my lawyer Id be shaking in my boots now. I dont think Clinton will be removed from office so, he need not worry too much about his defense. It is disappointing though that a stronger case (at least so far) hasnt been made in Clintons defense. On the other hand, its becoming abundantly clear (IMHO) that the Senators are pretty much siding along party lines and if the voting is similar Clinton will stay in office. I found the first segment of Mr. Ruffs argument disjointed and confusing. I was in and out of the room for the first 15 minutes so, I did miss how he was going to outline his presentation. I know that an overview requires touching down on many points but, there didnt seem to be a concurrent thread and it was hard to establish his overall strategy. Im sure part of this confusion was in the fact that I did not see the first part of his speech. For the most part, I found Ruffs arguments weak. I will highlight a few things. Of necessity, defense counsel needs to address each and every arrow shot at Clinton during by the prosecution. Thats standard and I expected the litany of charges and side comments to be addressed. Im not going to go over all of this - its just too many details and Id be writing till next year if I did. There was an argument to separate the man from the presidency with the idea that you can condemn the behavior of the man and still keep the presidency intact. This is actually a pretty good argument in that it gives everyone a back door. So, Ruff definitely gets a golden star for this one. Ruff disputed the position that if judges were impeached for perjury than so should the President by stating that the presidency is very different from the position of a judge. He backed this up with 3 explanations: 1) there is only one president; 2) judges are in office for life where as an election every four years will automatically clean house of any corrupt President and 3) that as there is only one president removing him from office will negatively impact society whereas you can remove any number of judges (there being so many of them) without negatively impacting society. I agree with all of these statements however, they are not germane to the case. Ruff stated that the phrase High Crimes and Misdemeanors as applied to impeachment is not vague and in fact is clearly defined. He never did provide that definition though he did state that perjury and obstruction of justice is not part of the definition. Good attempt but, it didnt get by me! Ruff stated that perjury in the Paula Jones case was already voted down by the house as a reason to impeach. I didnt follow the House rulings. If it was decided that the Senate would not follow up on this and if the Senate agreed not to follow up on this issue then it was inappropriate for the prosecution to go into this area. I dont know the rulings and decision on this matter. Ruff asserted that this is an issue of perjury on a private matter (more separation of man from the presidency) and that a removal from office is not a proper response. I take the position that perjury under oath before a Grand Jury is not a private matter. So, I see it differently from our good Mr. Ruff. Mr. Ruff suggested that determination be raise to Beyond a reasonable doubt. This is a good strategy. Another point for Mr. Ruff. Mr. Ruff did address an interesting technical point in terms a having a fair due process. He felt that the articles were a summary rather than a detailed accounting. Without a detailed accounting Clinton wouldnt be properly informed of what he was being charged with and therefore that charges should be dropped. Now, Im not a lawyer but, I didnt have any problems understanding the articles of impeachment. He also stated that the charges were listed as multiple offenses which lead to duplicity ( I think he said duplicity but, for some reason I understood repetition - its a point Im not clear on). If Ruff is proposing that because there were too many charges (reasons) for impeachment and that these charges were listed more than once I dont feel this a valid reason to drop the charges. Thats like say, because he shot 10 people instead of just one, the charges should be dropped. I do agree that the insertion of the phrase one or more is vague and that this could and probably should have read more accurately. Basically, this is an argument of due process with the understanding that the phrasing of the articles left Clinton possibly in doubt of why he is being impeached. Good try, but I dont doubt Clinton is able to follow the ball on this one. Ruff did bring up a good point about his testimony. The prosecution stated the Ruff was evasive (Im not remembering the actual phrasing here) when asked if Clinton had told the truth. Ruff read from the record, He surely did. This is

John Alejandro King says he's worked at the Company for 14 years "building data bases" and that he's always gotten high marks. But that was before he started poking fun at the CIA on the Internet. 'The Covert Comic' Currently featured on King's site (www.covertcomic.com) is an essay titled "The Intelligence Underground: The Spookiest of the Spooks," by one "Jim Beetle." King tells us that "Beetle" is a fake name for another CIA officer, but that his roster of "highly unorthodox" employees is "all real." Among the spooks: * An analyst obsessed with UFOs. * An intelligence officer who, prior to being discreetly retired a few years back, sold his own porn videos on the side. * A female staffer who "keeps male sex slaves." * A Special Agent who believes he's the son of Jesus Christ and lays hands on the sick. "Beetle" asks: "Why haven't these kooks been fired for their bizarre activities? Perhaps, in the end, they will be. For the moment though, these and other crazies continue in their official duties as custodians of some of America's most sensitive information." King, whose site also includes "CIA jokes," says his own future at the agency remains cloudy. Although he insists he hasn't spilled any classified info, he says his bosses at Langley have told him him his site is "highly inappropriate." "They can't fire me, but they did it anyway," says King, adding that he's 40 years old and makes about $72,500. "I had to get an attorney to reinstate me. My attorney suggested I abandon the Web site. I don't want to. I don't see why I can't write satire and work in the intelligence community." The CIA's phone directory lists a John King, but an agency spokesman declined any sort of comment. King doesn't think he'll be "terminated with prejudice," as they say in his business. He does believe the agency may put "me into what I think they'll call Special Status. The Covert Comic is still hanging in there, but barely."

-Caveat Lector- Brian, I believe if the cameras were facing the Senators we would see that many of them are fast asleep! Most of them don't want to do this and are forced to sit there. "This project is the political equivalent of athlete's foot fungus: It's nasty, it's dangerous, and it needs to be stopped before it spreads," said LP National Director Steve Dasbach. "The last thing we need is a bio-engineered killer fungus turned loose on the world." Late last year, Congress passed legislation that authorized $23 million for research into soil-borne fungi called "mycoherbicides," which will attack and kill marijuana plants, poppy plants, and coca plants. When developed, the fungus could be released in such South American countries as Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia, said U.S. officials. The legislation was guided through Congress by U.S. Representatives Bill McCollum (R-FL) and Mike DeWine (R-OH), who said the killer fungus was potentially a "silver bullet" in the War on Drugs. But Libertarians say the tax-subsidized fungus is a "biohazard" that could have a disastrous impact on the ecosystems of the target nations -- and, potentially, the whole world. "In the government's irresponsible search for a quick-fix in the War on Drugs, politicians could cause terrifying long-term ecological problems," warned Dasbach. According to scientists, the killer fungus could... * Attack other plants, wiping out valuable cash crops. "For example, a chemical alkaloid similar to the one that produces cocaine is present in many legal plants -- including tobacco and coffee beans," said Dasbach. "In an effort to wipe out drugs, this killer fungus could wipe out the livelihood of millions of farmers." * Cause many plants to develop stronger chemical defenses against the fungus, which could then mutate and spread to other, harmful plants. "According to scientists, mutated plants could pass on these resistant genes and create herbicide-resistant weeds, which could have a ruinous effect on farm yields," he said. "With world hunger already a problem, why risk making it worse?" * Wipe out industrial hemp plants, which are legal in every major industrialized country outside the United States. "No fungus is smart enough to tell the difference between legal hemp and illegal marijuana," noted Dasbach. ChipGate 98 *** API - Time Magazine reports an interesting case of high-tech graffiti. It seems that a couple of Intel engineers working on the design of a recent version of the Pentium microprocessor included a message that describes their feelings about Bill Gates, president of Microsoft, a good corporate pal of Intel's. When a portion of the Pentium chip is examined under a powerful scanning electron microscope, the phrase "bill sux" is clearly visible, etched into the surface of the chip. The "flaw" in the chip was only discovered by accident well after the chip was released into the market, too late for Intel to prevent the chip from being used in the manufacture of tens of thousands of PCs. Intel says that both engineers responsible were former employees of Motorola, makers of the chips that are the core of the Apple Macintosh. Both engineers have since been fired by Intel. His lawyer told the court: "My client is not a very bright young man." Silver star: To Michael Robinson, who rang police to deliver a bomb threat, but became so agitated about the mounting cost of the call that he began screaming "Call me back!" and left his phone number. Bronze star: To Paul Monkton, who used as his getaway vehicle a van with his name and phone number painted in foot-high letters on the side. British Cup To the passengers on a jam-packed train from Margate to Victoria, who averted their eyes while John Henderson and Zoe D'Arcy engaged in oral sex and then moved onto intercourse ... but complained when the pair lit up post-coital cigarettes in a non-smoking compartment. Flying Cross To Percy the Pigeon, who flopped down exhausted in a Sheffield loft, having beaten 1,000 rivals in a 500 mile race, and was immediately eaten by a cat. Alas, the 90-minute delay resulting from finding his remains and handing his ID tag to the judges relegated Percy from first to third place. Lazarus Laurel To Julia Carson, who as her tearful family gathered round her coffin in a New York funeral parlour, sat bolt upright and asked what the hell was going on. Celebrations were short-lived, due to the fact that Mrs.Carson's daughter, Julie, immediately dropped dead from shock. [CTRL] Crop Circles: An Interview with Dr. Chet Snow and Chad Deetken
Though I did this interview a year ago, the information is still current. Hilary Crop Circles: An Interview with Dr. Chet Snow and Chad Deetken Dr. Chet Snow and Chad Deetken have spent years attempting to unravel the mysteries of the phenomenon known as Crop Circles. While their distinct approaches to these formations may initially appear divergent, in essence, much of their core understanding and findings are quite similar. In speaking with both Dr. Snow and Mr. Deetken, what became immediately apparent was a blending of facts and beliefs richly imbued with psychology, hard science, myth, as well as ancient and contemporary wisdom. I enjoyed my time with these gentlemen immensely and I am deeply grateful that they took time out of their hectic schedules to be interviewed. - Hilary A. Thomas HT: How did your interest in crop circles begin? Dr. Snow: This is a little run down of how I got involved with crop circles because that is very personal to me. If you had asked me about crop circles ten years ago I probably would have had a confused blank look in my eyes and asked, What do you mean? A crop running around in circles in a crop field? At that time, I wouldnt have had any idea about them. Most people that I know, first really became aware of them in the early 1990s. I certainly became aware of them in 1990 [December of 1990 or January of 1991] when a friend from England, Dean Holden, came to visit and brought me a picture. I had never seen them before. I think it is worthwhile to note that it was really about that time that the circles became much more pictograms than just plain circles, circles in a line or, even circles in a pattern. They suddenly became patterns that looked like something and it became very clear that they were intelligently made. They werent just a random event out in a field. That was the first thing I wanted to say. The second point is that this introduction to the crops circles was a very synchronized experience for me. Within a month of meeting Dean, the elders from one of the Hopi villages called me up to visit them on a completely different matter. Something intuitively said to me, Why dont you take these pictures with you? I brought the picture when I went to meet them in February of 1991. That was really quite an eye-opener for me because suddenly they recognized certain of these patterns as having meaning to them. They took us out into a sacred canyon and showed us at least one set of petroglyps on the rock wall that really resembled one of the crop circle formations that I had shown them. I showed them a couple of other pictures with what seemed to be the English peoples interpretation and they said, No, no, no. You have to turned it upside down and it means something else. They were very excited about them and the fact that they were showing up now somewhere else in the world had meaning to them. I was excited by their reaction as I am quite interested in the prophetic aspect of the Hopi. Later on as I studied more, Ive learned that many of agriglyphs, or pictograms, seem to have meaning for other native or indigenous people including Australian aborigines. This is when I got involved with crop circles. Information about these formation eventually spread wider into our Western world maybe even at an unconscious level. People began to see these increasingly beautiful and complex formulas. This was a time (1990) when we began to get good aerial photos. Suddenly people, maybe even unconsciously, had a recognition of something they didnt understand that attracted them. Soon the media picked it up on the story. People got involved with wanting to do research on them. Then, for what ever reasons, maybe many different ones, many people got turned off at a public level. The media certainly got turned off, in part because they couldnt solve the mystery. They wanted it all to be wrapped up neatly and decided. Who was making them? How were they making them? And what was being made? The story of the crop circles didnt unfold that neatly. Since that time, it seems as if a very self selected cadre of people of no more than 100 to 150 people, seem to be the ones that return year after year. HT: Did the Hopi have any specific interpretations about any of the circles? Dr. Snow: One of the sets, the one they got the most excited about, is very similar to part of their Creation story. I wont go into all of their prophecy but, one of the parts of their prophecy is that we are moving from one world civilization to another. We are now in the fourth world, as they call it, and we are about to move into the fifth world. One of the sets of events that has to happen, or that is prophesied to happen, will be that there will be signs around the planet that are showing the recreation of the world starting to happen. One of the Hopi creation pictoglyphs is very similar to some of the crop circle glyphs that were coming in

Instead of pinpoint strikes, the administration is ready to carry out sustained bombing that could last up to three weeks, said three officials with the State Department and the National Security Council, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The attacks would begin if Iraq downed an American or British plane patrolling the ``no-fly'' zones in southern and northern Iraq. Other triggers would be if Iraqi President Saddam Hussein threatened the Kurdish minority in northern Iraq or the neighboring Arab states of Kuwait or Saudi Arabia, or if the administration learned the Iraqi leader was reconstituting biological, chemical or ballistic weapons. The use of sustained strikes would mark a more aggressive policy aimed at overthrowing Hussein rather than simply isolating his regime, the officials said. Few U.S. options remain Hussein's ability to stay in power has continually frustrated American policymakers. Now, only a few options remain, including limited retaliation or stepping up scenarios to overthrow Hussein. As it chooses the latter, the administration expects a particularly difficult period ahead. Following the December bombings and reports this week that the CIA and the National Security Agency had worked with United Nations weapons inspectors to listen to conversations among Hussein's elite troops, administration officials said the best they can expect is a less intrusive U.N. inspection regime. Under U.N. resolutions, Iraq must be disarmed before the lifting of economic sanctions imposed after its invasion of Kuwait in 1990. ``We know that we are going to lose the battle on UNSCOM,'' the U.N. Special Commission charged with disarming Iraq, one of the national security officials said. Richard Butler, the executive chairman of the inspection effort, is expected to lose his position because of questions about his cooperation with American spies, two U.N. Security Council diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Hazards of new policy The new, go-it-alone policy against Hussein is not without potential pitfalls. For one thing, it is predicated on the Iraqi leader provoking an attack, which means letting him set the pace. For another, analysts say, sentiment against the Americans from U.N. Security Council members France, Russia and China will probably grow if the standoff continues. Today, some argue, the United States is in a far worse position with Iraq than a year ago. ``The crises are all driven by Iraq,'' said Laurie Mylorie, publisher of Iraq News, an online newsletter that closely monitors developments there. ``Who would have thought a year ago that UNSCOM would be gone. That's a significant change [working] against the United States.'' But others see factors mounting against Hussein. Marine Gen. Anthony Zinni, head of U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf, said Friday that Hussein had revealed some vulnerability about security in southern Iraq by executing key military commanders during or after the bombing raids. ``I think there is some confusion in the ranks and some disgruntlement,'' Zinni said, referring to Iraqi troops in the south. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe from this mailing list, or to change your subscription to digest, go to the ONElist web site, at http://www.onelist.com and select the User Center link from the menu bar on the left. -Caveat Lector- It is becoming increasing clear to me that Saddam is being set up. Now, before people start gnashing teeth, I think one of the reasons he was "selected" is because of his willingness to the more nefarious things he is being credited with doing. Some of you may recall (and my memory is fuzzy on this because it was so long ago) that a year before the Desert Storm (not Fox) Saddam approached the US government to mediate a dispute he was having with Kuwait. He said that they were stealing Iraqi oil (and I don't remember the details of how this was being done. I believe through the pipeline that runs through Kuwait). Basically, Bush brushed him off and told Saddam to deal with it himself. Which, of course, he did. So, IF Saddam is being set up, I want to know to what end. If it were simply a matter of "eliminating" him that would have been done long ago despite being told how difficult it is to locate him. -Caveat Lector- Alamaine, I couldn't remember if it were horizontal drilling or tapping into the pipeline. In either case, Saddam did make the effort to go through proper channels. We can only second guess why Bush brushed him off, why he went to the US (perhaps knowing he wouldn't get assistance??? or it may have been a genuine request for help). I can't recall if he approached the UN or not. Where it is listed as a BuRec project, I would imagine it has something to do with water...although you never know. It's listed as being near the San Juan river so it could have been used, or is still being used, to divert water. This is cattle country. I'm sure many (if not all) of these tunnels are for utility purposes. Though I do question A LOT, I don't see a conspiracy with each and every event. If you happen to be in the area sometime, I would be curious as to what the locals say. Chama is only about 30 minutes from here so, the locals here should know. I'll ask around. Up in Idaho in a little town on I-15 between Idaho Falls and the Montana border is a town called Dubois. Just north of Dubois is a large Dept of Agriculture "sheep station." To set the flavor of this picture the Dept of Agriculture station which was used as a cover for a circular underground lab which worked on viruses and such in the movie Andromeda Strain. Yikes!!! That's nice to have in one's backyard. I used to live near Washington, D.C. and was in the area when there was "that minor incident" with the ebola virus. When you talk to the folks in Dubois (of which the small community supposedly depends on sheep station money for its small economy) nobody and I mean absolutely NOBODY has any clue what is done, other then to say something about "sheep research."When you ask some locals the question "do you have family that works there?" The answer seems to be "yes, but they don't talk about it" Usually is one newspaper article a year about some sheep this or that and that is the size of it. Then you have the LA County Dept of Corrections (Yup you read it right, Los Angles Calif) BUS that appears in Dubois during the night about twice a year or so. Apparently the bus stays for "a couple of weeks" then it drives off again in the middle of the night. Supposedly nobody knows who the driver is, why the bus is their, or 'who' comes in the bus but they are so used to its appearance that it isn't given a 2nd thought. Prisoners have been used as test subjects before. H...that is interesting. Probably just as strange as a 12.6 mile tunnel out in the middle of no where. :) Yeah, it's a little weird and may have a completely reasonable explanation for being there. Things do happen in these small southwest towns. 12 of the 80 some members of the Colorado cult (now dispersed all over the world) came from here. The employer of one of the young women had very nice things to say about her but, that she had seen some changes taking place a year or so before she joined the cult. It's dinky little town - there's nothing there. I mean a small town - with a gas pump and that's about it! Now, the southwest is famous for old mines but, I suspect that this isn't an old mining tunnel. It's a little weird. I could ask around and see what the local folk have to say about it. [CTRL] Alien Space Worm
Alien Space Worm by Hilary A. Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED] When I learned that the impeachment trial would be televised I did what any concerned citizen would do. I drove an hour to the nearest appliance store and bought a TV. Of course, being the techno whiz that I am, it took hours and several embarrassingly pathetic phone calls to get the darn thing set up. In truth, after a quick trip to the local hardware store (because one can never have too much cable) and then a return trip (to get the correct cable), I had it all plugged in and fired up in less than 10 hours. But, I digress. One would think that on the long drive through the Southwest desert in search of a TV my thoughts would take a philosophical turn or, at the very least, contemplate the woes that Americas will collectively face with the forthcoming impeachment trial. Fortunately, my alert mind focused on more important matters like the television show X-Files. In particular, I recalled an episode where sex bomb FBI special agent Dana Scully brandished two X-ray films clutched in her hot little hands and dramatically announced that part of her DNA was alien (and were not talking south of the border here). No, were talking about an alien space worm she discovered in her terrestrial travels. Now, I took it in stride that Scully was part alien. In fact, I believe my exact thoughts at that moment were, Cool. Since I view much of the Hollywood scene as living on a different planet, this was no stretch for me. I did, however, take great exception to the way science was presented in this episode. As I recall, Scully had a two hour time frame to do all the necessary lab work and get to her meeting. Anyone who has lived within a hundred mile radius of Washington, D. C. knows that it takes two hours to get across the street let alone across town. However, being in a generous mood, I will assume that some miracle befalls our heroic agent and that she is able to by pass that troublesome commute thing. This brings us back to the lab and some of the technical stuff (my forte!). Dana wanted to test the alien DNA. Basically, she was looking for some kind of pattern that would help her identify it. A more definitive test would have been DNA sequencing but that would take years and hundreds of scientists and more importantly this approach would leave the viewing audience scrambling for their remote controls. So, I can live with her going for a pattern. Now you just cant throw a worm under a microscope and see its DNA. You need to dig around in it and pull some of that stuff out. Again, being a magnanimous type person, Ill overlook the pesky task of getting rid of the tissue and I will assume that Scully has in her possession a big ol hunk of DNA. Now if she were to cut the DNA as it is and it showed the same pattern as her DNA then this would mean that she is, in fact, an alien space worm. Since we know that this isnt the case, I strongly suspect several steps in this process were left out. In fact, it would take many, many extraction procedures to obtain a portion of DNA with each stage taking all day to complete. So, lets assume that with the magic of Hollywood Scully has indeed only a portion of DNA. And again, with the wonder of Hollywood, Ill grant that all the interim tasks to arrive at the fateful X-rays films are completed in a timely fashion. Perhaps they performed this lab work in another dimension which would explain a lot about the show in general! For those who saw this episode, you may recall that each of the X-ray films had two black blobs positioned next to each other. While it looked pretty nifty, it neglected to show a pattern which was the entire point of the experiment! Im also assuming that one of the black blobs on each of the films was a control sample, as all good scientists run controls. After looking at these films, it showed that Scullys DNA, the alien spaces worm DNA and the control were all the same. My final question would have to be, what the heck did she use as a control sample? Maybe she used sex bomb FBI special agent Fox Mulders sisters DNA as a control. Of course, this means that Dana and Fox could never be a couple as they would, in fact, be brother and sister.

[CTRL] Clinton Projects $76B Surplus
Suddenly we no longer have a deficit? Gee when did this happen? The title of this article should be, I can give you up to $76B if you keep me in office. Hilary JANUARY 06, 11:08 EST Clinton Projects $76B Surplus WASHINGTON (AP) The administration today projected a budget surplus of more than $76 billion for this year. ``We can say the era of big deficits is over,'' President Clinton said. The president, convening a White House ceremony to tout the figure, immediately squelched any speculation that the extra revenue would be used to cut taxes. ``Like any family with long-term financial needs and a little more earnings than we expected, we can't go out and spend the surplus today. We have to plan for the future,'' said Clinton. ``Before we consider any new spending or tax cuts, first we must set this surplus aside until we save Social Security for the 21st century.'' He also cited ``investment needs'' in education and health research. The administration's Office of Management and Budget released its latest forecast for fiscal 1999, bringing the projected size of the surplus for the budget year ending Sept. 30 closer to congressional estimates of about $80 billion. The administration's newest estimate is significantly higher than its analysis last year, which estimated a fiscal 1999 surplus of $54.2 billion. ``We can say the era of big deficits is over. We are now entering the second year of an era of surpluses,'' Clinton said. He noted that when he took office in 1993, the fiscal 1999 projections were for a $404 billion deficit. The Congressional Budget Office is due to release its own projections later this month, in advance of the president's annual budget submission to Congress. In its August update, CBO was even more optimistic than the president's budget analysts, projecting an $80 billion surplus for fiscal 1999. Come join InTheShadows (formally known as exploration). [CTRL] Orangutans Suffer from too Much TV
Orangutans Suffer From Too Much TV Tuesday, January 5, 1999; 7:10 a.m. EST MOSCOW (AP) -- A plan to educate a group of orangutans on the joys of family life by watching television backfired after the apes became more interested in the tube than each other, The Moscow Times reported today. The newspaper said keepers at the St. Petersburg Zoo rigged up a TV outside the cage of orangutans Monika and Rabu to show them videos on being good parents. They took the step after the apes had a baby, Ramon, in November, but then started to neglect their offspring. Rabu, the male orangutan, became so engrossed in watching TV that he started to ignore his mate, Monika, who became upset over his neglect, the paper said. ``We'll reduce the time of TV watching in order to keep the family together,'' zoo director Ivan Korneyev was quoted as saying. [CTRL] Pesticide Exposure Affects Male Fertility
Thursday December 31 3:57 PM ET Pesticide exposure affects male fertility NEW YORK, Dec 31 (Reuters Health) -- A class of pesticides widely used in the developing world may disrupt men's reproductive hormone levels and contribute to fertility problems, according to a study in the December issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Previous research findings have suggested that exposure to organophosphate pesticides -- such as methyl- and ethylparathion -- can disrupt fertility. In experiments with mice, researchers found that exposure to methylparathion was associated with abnormal sperm production. In the new study, Dr. Xiping Xu of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, and colleagues measured pesticide byproducts and reproductive hormone levels in urine, blood, and semen samples from 34 Chinese men working in a factory producing organophosphate pesticides, and 44 Chinese men working in a textile factory. After controlling for the men's ages, smoking habits and other factors that can affect hormonal levels, the researchers found that men who had relatively high levels of exposure to the pesticides showed small but significant sex hormone abnormalities. Among other things, these men produced decreased levels of testosterone. The greater the exposure, the greater the abnormalities. ``We conclude that organophosphate pesticides have a small effect on male reproductive hormones,'' Xu and colleagues write. To the best of their knowledge, this is the first study that examines the effects of organophosphate pesticide exposure on the reproductive hormones of pesticide factory workers. Further study, with a larger group of men, is warranted to clarify the pesticides' effects on both hormone levels and reproductive function, they conclude. [CTRL] It's only fiction. Right. The Blood Trail
-Original Message-From: Martha /or James [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]Date: Monday, January 04, 1999 11:13 PMSubject: [exploration] It's only fiction. Right.Written in Blood (An Interview with Michael Sullivan) http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3640a55a6b89.htm Topic: White Water Written in Blood (An Interview with Michael Sullivan) JANUARY Magazine (literary) October, 1998 Linda Richards January Magazine Written In Blood Interview with Michael Sullivan, by Linda Richards He doesn't look like a lunatic. Crisply dressed and coifed, his blue eyes smile quickly -- though not for our cameras -- and his graying-blond hair stays neatly placed. He is, he tells me, a son of the south and this is verified by his voice: as close to clipped as a southern accent gets. An educated voice, certainly. But one that is, nonetheless, punctuated by the region that spawned him. He does not wear a white suit, but if he did it wouldn't look strange. In short, he doesn't look or sound at all like someone hatching a plot or grinding an ax, though looks can be deceiving. If half of the things Michael Sullivan is saying are true, the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal starts to look like a children's sandbox creation. Interesting for a while, but more crumble than substance. If it's not true, it still seems likely that Sullivan is going to sell a lot of books. I want to go on record as saying I am not planning on committing suicide, Sullivan says earnestly. I plan to live a long, long time. My interview with Sullivan did not go at all as planned. I arrived expecting to speak with the author of an interesting new suspense novel. I planned to talk to him about his writing process and perhaps his life, interests and favorite pets. The last thing I'd anticipated was being led down a dark path of conspiracy featuring some of the largest characters in international politics: especially some of those who (ahem) have been getting a lot of press in recent months. I had, of course, noticed some more than fleeting similarities between one of Blood Trail's major characters and a certain former governor from Arkansas. This I put down to the richness of fiction and the fact that Sullivan is a native of that state. However, it would seem that Sullivan's interest runs less to literature than it does to high level machinations: at least in this instance. With some passion Sullivan spoke at length about what led him to write Blood Trail. The fictional work focuses on two men from Arkansas. Robert Davis Prescott has been groomed almost from birth to take a place in American history. David Farr is the Vietnam Vet whose son is stricken with AIDS from a blood transfusion given to him in Canada. Farr wants to find out who is responsible, and is somewhat surprised when the trail -- the Blood Trail, if you will -- leads back to his home state and eventually to the White House and Prescott. Sullivan -- though it's not the writer's real name, and he's not talking -- is a doctor who says he was a medical practitioner for the Arkansas prison system between 1982 and, off and on, to the present time. He says that he knew that blood was being drawn from sick and infected Arkansas prisoners but he didn't know where the blood was being sold and distributed. In 1995, says Sullivan, he learned about infections and death in Canada, where the Arkansas blood had ended up. Sullivan says he became determined to find out more. The result of that research, says Sullivan, is in the novel Blood Trail. A story that while it's almost unbelievable, Sullivan says only begins to scratch the surface of the truth. Linda Richards: So is Bob Prescott's resemblance to Bill Clinton unintentional? Michael Sullivan: I had certain information when I started the book. Actually, not very much. I worked in the system. I knew they were taking blood from very sick people. I knew the group was basically corrupt. And it wasn't until years later that I realized that they didn't have a way to clean up. It was not until 1995 and the initial Krever investigation was kicked off that one article appeared in the Associated Press that said that tainted blood in Canada had been taken from Arkansas prisoners. And I said, 'God Almighty!' because I'd forgotten about it. I was in it. I knew certain things. You know, it was like this huge guilt rush hit me because I hadn't investigated it. That's not my specialty. I just assumed mistakenly that they had a way to manufacture some kind of clean product. Suddenly I remembered how Clinton had stood in and protected the HMA [Health Management Associates] through everything. Because they'd come under fire not because of plasma but because they hired drug addicts and they hired guys that had lost their medical licenses and several other things, especially dealing with narcotics. They'd come under fire from the media. Clinton had protected and in fact ensured

Hilary -Original Message- From: Dan S [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: isml [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tuesday, January 05, 1999 7:53 PM Subject: [InTheShadows] Thai scientists to clone rare white elephant From: Dan S [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: http://www.exn.ca/html/templates/htmlpage.cfm?ID=19990104-57Parent=Science - Thai scientists plan to clone rare white elephant January 4, 1999 Scientists in Thailand are hoping to bring back a royal elephant that died more than a hundred years ago. They hope to clone the white elephant from its remains which have been preserved in alcohol for posterity. "If possible, we scientists hope to clone this elephant since it is the best one ever found in the country," Chisanu Tiyscharoensri at Mahidol University's Institute of Science and Technology for Research and Development in Bangkok told the Bangkok Post. "Entirely white" and "extremely rare", the animal belonged to the 19th century monarch, King Rama III, who ruled Thailand from 1824 to 1851. The elephant is Thailand's national symbol, but deforestation and poaching are causing its numbers to dwindle. The white elephant characterized by its lighter-coloured skin is rare. Believed to bring good luck, all white elephants in Thailand are automatically the property of the Royal family. Inspired by Japanese scientists who are attempting to resurrect the mammoth, the team of scientists at Mahidol University has already succeeded in cloning a cow and hope their ten-year project will bring back a truly white-coloured elephant. But, their hope may remain just that hope. "No one has ever succeeded in reconstructing a cell from preserved DNA," says Dave Evans, acting chair of molecular biology and genetics at the University of Guelph. "People have been suggesting that they might get mammoths back from [the remains of] frozen mammoths. But, even with frozen cells, they're so badly damaged by the freezing, the basic chromosomal structure is all degraded." And alcohol would degrade the genetic material required for a successful cloning too, says Evans. "Alcohol is used as a preservative because it's a dehydrating agent," says Evans. He can't see how the nucleus (which contains all the genetic material) of any of the elephant's cells could remain intact when alcohol kills the lipid membranes which make the nucleus. While Evans points out that scientists have recovered some genes from old DNA and have even sequenced them from the frozen mammoths which roamed the Earth tens of thousands of years ago, he predicts it will be a long time before we're able to recover the nucleus required to clone an animal from such an old specimen. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe from this mailing list, or to change your subscription to digest, go to the ONElist web site, at http://www.onelist.com and select the User Center link from the menu bar on the left. [CTRL] Court to Hear Trade Center Dispute
Court to Hear Trade Center Dispute By Joel StashenkoAssociated Press WriterMonday, January 4, 1999; 10:44 a.m. EST ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- New York's highest court will hear arguments this week into whether the operator of the World Trade Center must turn over documents to victims of the 1993 bombing about the complex's vulnerability to such attacks. Lawyers for victims of the attack, which killed six people and injured 1,000, are suing the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the center. They contend that the agency had been warned as early as 1985 about the complex's susceptibility to a bomb attack in its underground parking garages. Victor Kovner, a lawyer for a coalition of bombing victims, will argue before the Court of Appeals on Tuesday that the 62 documents are ``pivotal'' to proving that the Port Authority is liable for damages because of its alleged negligence at responding to security concerns. The Port Authority has argued unsuccessfully before two lower courts that the documents the victims are seeking are confidential communications, exempt because disclosure could harm the public interest. Port Authority lawyer Milton Pachter plans to argue that releasing the documents ``would create a serious danger to the members of the public'' because terrorists could glean information to aid a future attack. Kovner counters that the Port Authority is seeking a ``radical and unwarranted expansion of the bounds of privilege.'' Included in group bringing the suit are relatives of those killed, people who were injured and companies which say they lost millions by being displaced from the building in the weeks following the blast. Four militant Muslims said they plotted the bombing to protest the United States' foreign policy in the Middle East. They were each sentenced to 240 years in prison. The victims say the most damning documents held by the Port Authority are consultants' analyses of an in-house security study conducted in 1985. That report said the center's underground garages posed a security problem and recommended measures such as random inspection of vehicles for explosives. The bombers left the explosives in a rental van parked in one of the lots. Lower courts have ruled that the documents must largely be released, except for some sensitive information about police informants. The Court of Appeals is expected to rule on the case within a few months. [CTRL] Bin Laden, Saddam Team for Terror
BIN LADEN, SADDAM TEAM FOR TERRORBy TOM TOPOUSIS THE NEW YORK POST Saddam Hussein is joining forces with Islamic fundamentalist Osama bin Laden to launch a joint terror counterstrike against the United States and Britain, a new report says. Feeling the sting of a U.S. bombing campaign, Saddam has reached out to the millionaire mastermind of the two U.S. embassy bombings in Africa - hoping to tap into bin Laden's network of terrorists, Newsweek says in this week's edition. An Arab intelligence expert, reported to know Saddam personally, told the magazine that very soon, you will be witnessing large-scale terrorist activity by the Iraqis. The source claims that the joint attacks would be aimed primarily at U.S. and British targets in the Islamic world. The contacts between Saddam and bin Laden have so far been limited to lower-level agents, according to U.S. intelligence sources cited by the magazine. An alliance would match Saddam's weapons - including easy-to-hide biological agents - and bin Laden's force of terror zealots. Bin Laden is known to have coveted biological and chemical weapons. A U.S. cruise-missile attack against bin Laden targeted a factory that he owns in Sudan, where the United States believes he was trying to manufacture chemical weapons. In an interview with Newsweek at his desert camp in Afghanistan, bin Laden confirmed that civilian Americans are as much a target as the military or government agencies. Muslim scholars have issued [a religious order] against any American who pays taxes to his government, said bin Laden. He is our target, because he is helping the American war machine against the Muslim nation. Bin Laden has been waging a public-relations war, granting interviews to both Newsweek and Time magazines. Clutching an AK-47 automatic rifle at his side, bin Laden conceded to Time that he instigated the attack on the embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. But he falls short of taking the blame. Our job is to instigate and, by the grace of God, we did that, said bin Laden. I did not order [the attacks], but was very glad for what happened to the American spies in East Africa, the Saudi exile told Newsweek. Meanwhile, U.N. officials are trying to convince Baghdad not to ban American and British nationals from working on humanitarian teams in Iraq. The talks are aimed at averting a new crisis just two weeks after the United States and Britain ended airstrikes to punish Baghdad for refusing to cooperate with U.N. weapons inspections. The U.N. officials said Baghdad told them it was concerned for the safety of Americans and Britons in Iraq after the raids, and would not renew visas for them. Diplomats said Iraq's decision could affect 18 American and British citizens working throughout Iraq for the U.N. humanitarian programs. = Together We Create Heaven on Earth[EMAIL PROTECTED] = Come join exploration - a discussion list dedicated to keeping up-to-date on new technologies, advancements in medicine, environmental concerns, 'conspiracy theories' and, of course, UFO stuff. [CTRL] Pentagon Racing to Prepare for 2000
Pentagon racing to prepare for 2000 Nearly everything in military dependent on computers By Jim MiklaszewskiNBC NEWS WASHINGTON, Dec. 31 If you use a computer at all chances are youve heard about the year 2000 problem, the so-called Millennium Bug a computer glitch that could lead to shutdowns, lockouts and global panic. The American military is almost completely reliant on computers and, because of that, finds itself in a situation both vulnerable and dangerous. EVERYTHING IN Americas military arsenal whether it shoots, floats, flies, or marches relies on computers. But a once-in-a-century computer glitch, known in the Pentagon as the Millennium Bomb, could bring this mighty war machine to a halt. If we left things as they are right now the military would effectively shut down, said Sen. Robert Bennett, R-Utah, who chairs a committee on the year 2000 problem. 1900 OR 2000? They would shut down because most computers use only the last two digits of the calendar year so when the year 2000 rolls around, theyll read zero-zero as the year 1900. In high-risk military operations, that could be deadly. Somewhere, someplace, there will be people who die as a result of the Y2K problem, said Bennett. The scope of the Pentagons problem is mind-boggling all told, 25,000 separate computer systems could be affected. Were doing our best but theyre going to be some nasty surprises because the problem is so big, said John Hambre, a deputy Defense Secretary. Aircraft and ships could be sent off course, cruise missiles may not find their targets, satellite data could be lost. THE NUCLEAR ISSUE A priority, of course, is repairing the computers that control nuclear weapons. Hambre, though, vows that those programs will be fixed. But what about other nuclear powers? The North American Air Defense Command, deep beneath a Colorado mountain, will stand watch against a missile attack. The Pentagon wants to share this early warning information with Russia and China, because if their computers go blank at midnight 2000, they could accidentally surmise theyre under nuclear attack. Because of anxieties about the possibilities of a sneak attack, forces could be ordered to a higher state of alert level that could lead to accidental war, said John Pike, from the Federation of American Scientists. $4 BILLION PRICE TAG The Pentagon will spend at least $4 billion to defuse the Millennium bomb and officials in Washington are confident theyll do it. But critics claim they started too late and the fixes wont be done in time. The cost of failure could be much higher. If the Pentagon needed any reminder, it is the 28 American soldiers killed by an Iraqi scud during the Gulf War. The Patriot anti-missile battery that might have saved them, failed, in part, because its computer clocks were out of sync. Its something Americas military leaders are determined to never let happen again. = Together We Create Heaven on Earth[EMAIL PROTECTED] = Come join exploration - a discussion list dedicated to keeping up-to-date on new technologies, advancements in medicine, environmental concerns, 'conspiracy theories' and, of course, UFO stuff. [CTRL] Warning Against Khmer Rouge Trial
Friday, January 1, 1999 Published at 14:51 GMT BBC Online NewsWorld: Asia-PacificWarning against Khmer Rouge trial A warning not to put on trial two leading figures in Cambodia's reign of terror in the 1970s has been issued by an aide to the men. The aide, Long Norin, said a trial of the two defecting Khmer Rouge leaders would expose the role of foreign powers in Cambodia - specifically the United States and China. A lot of people are involved and it's very complicated. If they push for this, we will dig up the past and present our own case, he said. There have been growing calls for the two men - Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea - to be tried on genocide charges for their actions in the Khmer Rouge government, which is held responsible for the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million people. The leaders surrendered to the Cambodian Government late last week after striking a deal with Prime Minister Hun Sen. There has been controversy over the warm welcome given to the two men by the authorities. They have been on a trip to the seaside and had lunch at the prime minister's residence. Hun Sen has said it would not be in the national interest to hold a trial. Correspondents say he may be under pressure from states like China and Thailand to avoid a hearing. However, on Friday he attacked Thailand for hosting the leaders and forcing him to accept defections rather than having them stand trial, French news agency AFP reported. King Norodom Sihanouk and his son, the ousted prime minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh, have said they support the idea of an international trial. Several members of the king's family were killed by the Khmer Rouge. The US, Britain and France have all issued strong statements saying that leaders of the Khmer Rouge must be held accountable for their action. Experts hired by the United Nations are looking at the possibility of an international tribunal, along the lines of those for Rwanda and Bosnia. They are due to report next month, but BBC Cambodia Correspondent Caroline Gluck says without the full co-operation of the Cambodian Government it will be hard to see how that might happen. Khieu Samphan, former nominal leader of the Khmer Rouge, and Nuon Chea, the movement's chief ideologue, were key figures in Cambodia's reign of terror. = Together We Create Heaven on Earth[EMAIL PROTECTED] = Come join exploration - a discussion list dedicated to keeping up-to-date on new technologies, advancements in medicine, environmental concerns, 'conspiracy theories' and, of course, UFO stuff. [CTRL] The Dubious Achievement Awards
DECEMBER 28, 07:37 EST The Dubious Achievement Awards By LARRY BLASKOAssociated Press Writer For journalists, year's end is a time of reflection, which takes much less energy than actually reporting something. That leaves time for other worthy pursuits, such as celebrating at holiday parties. In that spirit, a glass or two is hereby raised to this year's winners of the CompuBug Dubious Achievement awards for Determined Dumbness in software and hardware. The Practice Makes Perfect award goes to Microsoft for Windows 98, which fixed some of Windows 95's bugs and introduced a swarm of its own. The I Knew I Forgot Something award goes to Apple Computer, which introduced its much-touted iMac without a floppy disk drive. Clearly, the ``Think Different'' crowd never takes work home. Of course, for $150, you can add an external floppy drive, just like you could 20 years ago, before it became standard equipment. With the minimum system requirements for everything from games to productivity software roaring past the 166-megahertz Pentium/32 megabytes of RAM mark, the Immoderation in All Things award is shared by the entire software industry. While we all would like to upgrade our machines every six months, many of us have other financial obligations, including children, a mortgage and such. The software industry also wins the Punishing Profligate Packaging award for surrounding 5-inch-wide CD-ROMs with enough cardboard to deforest Canada, much of it inside in sadistic origami creations that aren't going to let go of the software without inflicting at least a paper cut. And we really needed the latest trend: box-cover flaps, some with multiple pages, touting the product. Quick, go hug a tree while there are still some left. The Yes, We Have No Bananas award goes to software manufacturers whose only installation and help instructions are online. If we could get the doggone stuff to install, we wouldn't need the help! The Chicken Little Marketing award goes to those who raise the grim vision of the end of computing in Year 2000 unless you do a ``system audit'' with a product that, coincidentally, they sell. The Al Capone Financing Genius award goes to those computer manufacturers that are pushing leasing programs to increase their market share, thereby making it possible for consumers to pay much more for a computer than it would cost to buy one. Manufacturers say it makes computers available to those who can't afford to buy one in the same way loan sharks give high-risk lenders ``access to financial services.'' Finally, the Tolerance Beyond Belief award goes to publicists, editors and, most of all, CompuBug's readers, who have endured with me this year and for the past 15 years and keep coming back for more. Questions and comments are welcome. Mail to: CompuBug, P.O. Box 626, Summit, N.J. 07901. [CTRL] Oklahoma Bomb Jury to Issue Report
DECEMBER 29, 15:38 EST Oklahoma Bomb Jury To Issue Report OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Eighteen months and 117 witnesses after it began its work, a grand jury investigating allegations of a wider conspiracy and a government cover-up in the Oklahoma bombing is expected to release its findings Wednesday. The Oklahoma County grand jury was convened by way of a petition drive over the objections of state Attorney General Drew Edmondson, who called it ``the worst kind of conspiracy pandering.'' And both he and the chief federal prosecutor in Oklahoma expressed doubt anything would come out of the investigation. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols have already been convicted on federal charges in the bombing. McVeigh received a death sentence, Nichols life in prison. An Army buddy, Michael Fortier, pleaded guilty to knowing about the attack beforehand but telling no one. He got 12 years in prison. Former state Rep. Charles Key, one of the leaders of the petition drive to empanel the grand jury, has said he believes that the federal government knew about the bombing beforehand and that others were involved but have not been arrested. The government has denied any prior knowledge. Key said his efforts were worth it no matter what the outcome. ``It's always worth it to do the right thing. That's what I and the rest of us who have worked on this feel. We've done the right thing for the right reason,'' the former legislator said. The grand jury has the power to indict, but Bob Macy, the district attorney in Oklahoma City, has already said he will bring murder charges against McVeigh and Nichols, and the grand jury focused instead on other possible figures. U.S. Attorney Patrick Ryan, who prosecuted McVeigh and Nichols, has said that the government had ``no credible evidence to suggest that others were involved.'' And Edmondson said he believes the odds are slim the grand jury investigation will shed any additional light on the April 19, 1995, attack that killed 168 people and injured more than 500 others. ``I will be amazed if they suggest by name any people involved in the bombing that are not even known,'' Edmondson said. As of October, the cost of the grand jury was put at nearly $414,000. In October, the grand jury complained of attempts to contact members at home and of erroneous claims about what some witnesses would say. = Together We Create Heaven on Earth[EMAIL PROTECTED] = Come join exploration - a discussion list dedicated to keeping up-to-date on new technologies, advancements in medicine, environmental concerns, 'conspiracy theories' and, of course, UFO stuff. [CTRL] Bank Sues Hubbell for Overdue Money
DECEMBER 29, 11:14 EST Bank Sues Hubbell for Overdue Money LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) Presidential friend Webster Hubbell has been sued by the Bank of Little Rock, which claims he owes at least $43,604 on a 1997 promissory note. Frederick S. Wetzel III, attorney for Bank of Little Rock, said the money stems from a second mortgage on the Hubbells' Little Rock home. The total owed by Hubbell and his wife, Suzanna, was calculated through Dec. 15, according to the lawsuit filed Monday in Pulaski County Circuit Court. Each day they fail to pay adds $11.95 in interest, the lawsuit said. Hubbell, a former top Justice Department official, was indicted by a federal grand jury for a third time in November on charges that he covered up his and Hillary Rodham Clinton's roles in a fraudulent Arkansas real estate development deal. They were partners at the Rose Law Firm at the time. The indictment accuses Hubbell of perjury before a congressional committee, fraud, false statements and impeding two federal regulatory agencies. A federal judge in July threw out a 10-count tax-evasion indictment against Hubbell. Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr has appealed that dismissal. Hubbell pleaded guilty to tax evasion and mail fraud in December 1994 after admitting to overbilling his clients at the Rose Law Firm. He served 19 months in prison before his release in February 1997. = Together We Create Heaven on Earth[EMAIL PROTECTED] = Come join exploration - a discussion list dedicated to keeping up-to-date on new technologies, advancements in medicine, environmental concerns, 'conspiracy theories' and, of course, UFO stuff. [CTRL] Critics Cite Iran Weapons Loophole
DECEMBER 28, 12:48 EST Critics Cite Iran Weapons Loophole By GEORGE GEDDAAssociated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) Recent statements by an Iranian official have critics worried that Iran may exploit a loophole in the chemical weapons convention treaty approved last year one insisted on by conservative U.S. senators. Citing these recent statements, some disarmament experts say the Tehran government could take advantage of conditions that were meant to protect U.S. interests. ``We have provided Iran a loophole to cheat,'' said Amy Smithson, a weapons expert at the Henry L. Stimson Institute. U.S. officials had hoped the August 1997 inauguration of President Mohammad Khatami, widely perceived as a moderate, could lead to an Iranian reassessment of its weapons programs. Not long after Khatami took office, in November 1997, Iran ratified the chemical weapons convention. The treaty bans the use, development, production and stockpiling of all chemical warfare agents and requires the destruction of existing stockpiles over 10 years. The U.S. Senate ratified the treaty in April 1997, only after Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C. and his allies set conditions for U.S. participation, including giving the president the right to veto inspections at suspect sites and barring inspectors from taking soil or other types of samples from U.S. chemical facilities out of the country. Marc Thiessen, a Helms spokesman, said, ``The provisions are designed to stop the treaty from being used for corporate espionage and other forms of espionage.'' Some arms control advocates believe the administration gave away too much to Helms in the negotiations. Iran had remained largely silent on the issue until a few weeks ago, when Iranian diplomat Mohammad R. Alborozi spoke in the Netherlands at a conference of states that are members of the convention. Alborozi quickly took aim at the conditions imposed by the U.S. Senate. Expressing regret over the measures, he said ``that the spillover effect of such an exercise ... can open the door for legislative bodies of other countries to seek derogation from the convention is a matter of serious concern for all state parties. ``If other states follow this pattern, then any outlook for full and unconditional implementation of the provisions of the convention will be in jeopardy. This we regard as a seriously alarming matter.'' At the same time, Alborozi said his government has decided to ``exercise and demonstrate maximum transparency and determination for full compliance with the provisions of the Convention.'' Alborozi did not say whether Iran currently retains a chemical weapons production capability. Smithson said the Iranian comments were not reassuring, and that by taking a cue from Washington, Iran is in effect saying it too could block a challenge inspection on the basis of national security interests. Spurgeon Keeny, of the Arms Control Association, agreed: ``When we exempt ourselves from certain provisions, we're inviting Iran or other countries to question our seriousness.'' A Clinton administration official acknowledged that the conditions leave Washington ill-positioned to argue that other states don't have the same right. Despite the conditions, the official said, the United States believes it can faithfully comply with the treaty and will do so. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Iran's willingness to abide by the treaty has been in doubt since the beginning. He said Iran's membership in the Non-Proliferation Treaty has not prevented it from trying to develop nuclear weapons and that Iran also is pursuing a biological weapons capacity despite a treaty commitment not to do so. Iran has denied it is trying to develop nuclear or biological weapons. A 1997 Pentagon report issued at the time Iran ratified the convention said chemical weapons were a high priority for Iran because of its inability to respond in kind to Iraq's attacks during their war in the 1980s. Iran also was motivated by evidence, the report said, that Iraq was developing advanced agents such as VX, a substance of which one or two drops can be lethal. Helms, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, says that since no weapons inspection regime is foolproof, the ban will not help the situation or enhance American security anyway. He argues the United States has little to fear from most countries that ratify the treaty. The concern is with those that ratify and cheat and those that don't join the treaty at all. Indeed, five of the seven nations on the State Department list of countries accused of promoting international terrorism have neither signed nor ratified the treaty: Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Syria and Sudan. The two remaining countries are Iran and Cuba. = Together We Create Heaven on Earth[EMAIL PROTECTED] = Come join exploration - a discussion list

Very few people are aware of the pagan origins of modern Christian observances such as Christ-Mass. (Everyone should check out the origin of the use of Christmas trees!) Your words are, as usual, brilliantly enlightening in a non-threatening manner. Someone should take lessons from you :-) BTW, wasn't there a study some years ago pertaining to the calculation of Christ's birth around the Roman census--purportedly between January and April? Edward On Fri, 25 Dec 1998, MShrum wrote: Remember, contrary to what the advertisers and the media would have you believe, this is not a "holiday." It is a religious observance [the term they always use for our Arab friends: Ramadan]. Christmas is to honor the birth of the Christ child. Well, to begin with, the term 'holiday' comes from the contraction of the word 'holy day', so your objection to the word is meaningless. Secondly, there is NOTHING about December 25th that has ANYTHING to do with the birth of Jesus the Christ, except that the Roman Catholic church decided to put a 'Christian' veneer on pre-existing pagan celebrations of the season... Evidence points to either a spring or an early autumnal birthdate for Jesus the Christ (currently, spring is favored in scholarly circles, based on a comet which would have been visible in the spring of 5 BCE... but other evidence in the past has been used to argue for an early autumn birthdate)... Either way, the beginning of winter could NOT have been the actual birth date of Jesus the Christ...it was a date that fell in the middle of the ancient Roman Saturnalia...it was also the date the followers of Mithras claimed was the birthdate of Mithras...and it also roughly corresponded with the Yule festivities of the pagan northern European tribes.. So the Church, after centuries of trying to BAN Christians from participating in the various early winter festivals of their particular geographical area, adopted an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" attitude, and 'allowed' the festivals to continue, as long as the participants put a 'Christian' interpretation to things...hence, holly was explained to represent Christ's crown of thorns, etc. But you would have been hard-pressed to find anything resembling our modern holiday...even more hard-pressed to find anything representing a RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCE, other than a possible midnight Mass (which gave the name to the holiday, e.g. "Christ's Mass")...most festivities more closely resembled modern-day Mardi Gras, with people dressing in costume, and a wild, licentious, lascivious time being enjoyed by all... EASTER is the main holiday of the Christian church, the observance which gives the religion it's whole meaning, and not Christmas... HAPPY HANNAKAH AND A VERY BLESSED CHRISTMAS! By calling it ``promising,'' the agency rejected pleas from environmental groups to disqualify Yucca Mountain. Those groups have cited research showing that groundwater could be contaminated by radioactive waste during the thousands of years the nuclear fuel would remain highly radioactive. DOE released its first detailed analysis on the potential waste site in a long-awaited viability assessment. The agency said that if it were eventually approved, the site would cost some $19 billion to build and monitor. ``DOE believes that Yucca Mountain remains a promising site for a geologic repository and that work should proceed to support a decision in 2001 on whether to recommend the site to the president for development as a repository,'' the DOE said. For the site to be recommended, the agency said it must still demonstrate that a repository can be designed and built at Yucca Mountain that would protect the public and the environment. The waste site would become the home for some 70,000 metric tons of spent radioactive fuel rods from nuclear power plants, and additional waste from production of nuclear weapons. Currently, around 38,000 tons of spent fuel is being stored at more than 70 commercial nuclear power plants across the country, pending the resolution of a dispute over when the federal government must remove the waste for storage. DOE said uncertainties remained about key natural processes in the Yucca Mountain region, and over preliminary design plans. To address the outstanding questions, the agency said environmental impact assessments would be conducted in the next two years before the final recommendation in 2001. The report said the advantages of making Yucca Mountain the repository site included: Location. The mountain lies 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas on unpopulated land owned by the federal government and adjacent to the Nevada Test Site, the longtime home for more than 900 nuclear weapons tests; Lack of water. DOE said water is the main way radioactive elements are transported from a repository, and noted that Yucca Mountain is in a desert, with an average rainfall of 7 inches; Groundwater. The nearest groundwater is isolated in a closed basis and does not flow into any any rivers that reach the ocean. The DOE said the natural geology and the preliminary repository design can keep water away from the waste for thousands of years. Using mathematical models, the agency said that for 10,000 years after the repository is closed in around the year 2045, people living near Yucca Mountain are expected to receive little or no increase in radiation exposure. The maximum radiation exposure was expected to occur after 300,000 years, the report said. DOE said the preparation of environmental impact statements in 1999 and 2000 would cost around $1.1 billion, and if approved, the construction and placement of waste would cost around another $18.7 billion in constant 1998 dollars. The first waste would be emplaced in 2010 and the last waste in 2033, and the site closed 10 years after the last waste is

Bob Livingston said today he would not serve as the next House speaker and will leave Congress next year. He apologized for having engaged in extramarital affairs. ``I must set the example that I hope President Clinton will follow. ... I will not stand for speaker of the House on January 6 but rather will remain as backbencher in this House I love so much,'' Livingston said as the House fell silent. He said would quit Congress after six months. ``I was prepared to lead our narrow majority as speaker and I believe I had .. to do a fine job, but I cannot do that job.'' Livingston began his speech by calling on Clinton to resign after being impeached, but then said he could not do so unless he, too, resigned. Livingston, 55, was nominated without opposition to succeed Newt Gingrich as speaker on Nov. 18. Gingrich had stunned the House with his resignation on Nov. 7. The first indications that Livingston's quest to lead the House may face new hurdles arose as the House impeachment debate unfolded. The Thursday night revelation by Livingston, R-La., that he had ``on occasion strayed from my marriage'' was only hinted at on the House floor during the day-long debate. ``We are now at the height of a cycle of the politics of negative attacks, character assassination, personal smears of good people,'' said House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, D-Mo. But as rumors hurtled around the Capitol about details of the affairs, Livingston met with several conservatives who were rethinking their support of the 55-year-old Louisianan, ``We ought to ask questions ... rather than circle the wagons for one of our tribe,'' Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., said in an interview. He said he would spend Christmas ``struggling'' over whether to support Livingston. Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., also said Republicans should re-examine Livingston's fitness to be speaker. ``You can't criticize the president's behavior as being unacceptable and then not consider this as material, just ignore this and brush it aside,'' he said Several other conservatives, speaking on condition of anonymity, said once the House impeachment debate is over, they will think about whether Livingston should take over when the 106th Congress is sworn in on Jan. 6. Livingston's problem is intensified by the narrow GOP margin in the next House: just 223-211, plus one independent who usually votes with Democrats. If just six Republicans refuse to support him for speaker, he would lack the 218 votes needed to be elected -- assuming the Democrats and independent vote against him. Outside the chamber, many Republicans -- and some Democrats -- said Livingston's infidelities were a personal matter and he remained qualified to become speaker. Livingston said Thursday night his wife of 33 years, Bonnie, and his four grown children have forgiven him. ``His stature, because of the way he handled himself, was enhanced,'' said Rep. John Sununu, R-N.H. ``I think they're none of our business,'' Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., a Livingston friend, said of the infidelities. ``Anybody who knows Bob Livingston and Bonnie knows they are two first-rate human beings.'' Other Democrats, however, said the episode showed Republican inconsistency in judging Clinton and Livingston. ``It shows their partisan rancor, where they're quick to forgive and forget Mr. Livingston's infidelities yet seem hellbent for going after the president,'' said Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I. Livingston allies said they detected no deterioration of support. But some Republicans worried the episode could hurt Livingston if he does become speaker. Bachus said Republicans must learn when and to what extent Livingston engaged in extramarital affairs. He said he also wants to know why Livingston did not disclose this when he began running for speaker last month, knowing that the House soon would be considering impeachment. Livingston revealed the affairs after Hustler magazine asked him for comment about claims by at

It appears that events are moving at an accelerated pace: - FLASH NEWS - Speech reversals from a Presidential press conference yesterday (Thursday 12/17) indicate that a U-2 FLIGHT OVER IRAQ TO ASSESS BOMB DAMAGE ENCOUNTERED TWO OR MORE UFO'S - and that this event was the cause of serious concern. Method: Speech reversing software Source: Recorded from Internet, very high level of background noise, required significant processing to clarify reversals. Circumstances: During a press conference, the President was asked how he would respond to those suggesting the attack on Iraq was merely a means of delaying impeachment proceedings. Because it was hoped his answer would be revealing on this issue, his response was recorded and analyzed. Results contained a surprise! Normal speech: This is the statement you heard on the news all day, which begins "That it's not true. That what I did was the right thing for the country. I don't think any serious person would..." The segment l reviewed runs for slightly over a minute. General topic is timing, reasons, and current information about military operations in Iraq. Each of our peoples are presented with problems in doing just that. Though considering the growing number of corpses surrounding the Clinton Administration I suspect that these problems that one could encounter are very similar indeed. It's really inconvenient when the facts get in the way, as Reagan would say. HmmI'm not sure what you are referring to in my post here as you later suggest that the corpse concept is an urban legend. Please clarify. Most Americans are not confronted with the problem of removing their democratically elected leader. Most Americans are confronted with a radical right-wing cabal and a compliant press who are attempting to remove the President on a trivial legalism. Indeed. It is a dilemma. Does one boot out a President on a "trivial legalism" because the supposed greater offenses have not been proven? Is this the only way the House and Senate can get rid of him without dragging out all the dirty laundry which would implicate numerous people or is all of this "dirty laundry" a bunch of conspiracy nonsense? Re: trivial legalism. Most people would lie about a sexually indiscretion. It doesn't make it right but, it is understandable. However, I will maintain my position that Clinton is the President of the United States and therefore must abide by a higher standard of conduct for in not doing so he directly affects the lives of countless millions of people adversely. It may not seem fair but, it is necessary IMHO and it's a position that I continue to maintain. If Clinton does not want to abide by these strict "rules" then he needs to step down from office. As for the corpses, i suggest that you visit the urban legends site. I have. I have also done considerable research in the area. Thanks for the feedback. Re: [CTRL] MREs
-Caveat Lector- Jim, Yes, I had read about the Kansas City stocking. I believe I read the same postings about the homeless being hired for this work. If I understand, MREs have a relatively short shelf life - perhaps 2 years. So, if someone is stocking in the event of "something going down" they 1) haven't done their homework with respect to how long the supplies would last or 2) have done there homework and aren't expecting to need supplies for a very long time, or 3) anticipate that something is going to occur within a relatively short period of time and that that something would require stockpiling large quantities of food. The number I heard for the West Virginia mountains (which also included various types of equipment) was rations for 22 days for 500,000 people. They was the amount that this "person" saw but, didn't know if there was more. If true, that is a heck of a lot of food. [CTRL] Effects of Microwaves on Humans
Hello all, Have fun with this Hilary Effects of Microwaves on Humans Subject Report The following report was written some years ago. I am working with a copy that is difficult to read so please note that there may be some typographica l errors for I am unable to clearly see all the printed material. There is one section missing from the report and as I am unable to locate the author I can not include the omitted section. = Hilary FORENSIC RESEARCH DOCUMENT TO61-7R10/10-77F05 RELEASE PRIORITY: CLASS I ROO1a RESEARCH HISTORY: The microwave radiomissor cooking ovens were originally researched and developed by the Nazis for use by the mobile support operations for the invasion of the Soviet Union. By being able to utilize electronic equipment for preparation of meals on a mass-scale, the logistical problem of cooking fuels would have been eliminated, as well as the convenience of producing edible products in a greatly reduced time-factor. After the close of World War II, the Allies discovered the medical research and documentation concerning these apparatuses. These documents and the experimental microwave equipment was transferred to the U. S. War Department, and classified for reference and scientific investigation. The Soviet Union also retrieved some of the devices, and proceeded to undertake experimentation on a separate basis. The Russians have been the most diligent in their research on the biological effects of microwave ovens, and have outlawed their use, and have also issued an international warning concerning the possible biological and environmental damage that can be caused by the use of this and similar-frequency electronic apparatus. FORENSIC RESEARCH ACTIVITIES SUMMARY The following are the most significant German and Russian research operations facilities concerning the biological effects of microwaves: the initial research conducted by the Germans during the Barbarossa military campaign, at the Humbolot-Uviversitat zu Berlin (1942-1943): then, beginning in 1957 and up to the present, the Russian research operations are being conducted at the Institute of Radio Technology at Kinsk, Byelorussian Autonomous Region; also at the Institute of Radio Technology at Rajasthan in the Rossiskaja Autonomous Region, both in the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. In most cases, the foods used for research analysis were exposed to microwave propagation at an energy-potential of 100 kilowatts/cm3/second, to the point considered acceptable for sanitary, normal ingestion. The effects noted by the German and Russian researchers will be presented in three categories: Category I, Cancer-Causing Effects; Category II, Nutritive Destruction of Foods; and Category III, Biological Effects of Exposure. [The first two points of Category I are missing. The remainder of the report is intact] 3. Creation of a binding effect to radioactivity in the atmosphere, thus causing a marked increase in the amount of alpha-and-beta-particle saturation in foods; 4. Creation of cancer-causing agents within protein-hydrolysate compounds in milk and cereal grains; 5. Alteration of elemental food-substances, causing disorders in the digestive system by unstable catabolism (breakdown) of foods subjected to microwaves; 6. Due to chemical alternations within food-substances, malfunctions were observed within the lymphatic systems, causing a degeneration of the immune- potentials of the body to protect against certain forms of neoplastics (cancerous growths); 7. Ingestion of microwaved foods caused a higher percentage of cancerous cells within the blood serum (cytomas); 8. Microwave emissions caused alteration in the catabolic (breakdown) behavior of glucoside-and galactoside-elements within frozen fruits when thawed in this manner; 9. Microwave emission caused alteration of the catabolic (breakdown) behavior of plant-alkaloids (elemental substances) when raw, cooked, or frozen vegetables were exposed for even extremely short durations; 10. Cancer-causing free-radicals were formed within certain trace-mineral molecular formations in plant substances, and in particular, raw root-vegetables; and 11. In a statistically high percentage of persons, microwaved foods caused stomach and intestinal cancerous growths, as well as a general degeneration of peripheral cellular tissues, with a gradual breakdown of the function of the digestive and excretive systems. CATEGORY II: DECREASE IN FOOD VALUE: Microwave exposure caused significant decreases in the nutritive value of all foods researched. The following are the most important findings: 1. A decrease in the bioavailability (capability of the body to utilize the nutriment) of B-complex vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, essential minerals and lipotropics in all foods; 2. A loss of 60-90% of the vital-energy field content of all tested foods; 3. A reduction in the

[CTRL] Some Thought on Iraq
-Caveat Lector- Some thoughts on Iraq: 1) Because Saddam has a tendency to lop off weapons at anyone including his own citizens his "toys" need to be taken away from him. He's been a very bad boy. Therefore, intervention is needed. However, bombing installations is probably not the best approach. If containment of these weapons is truly the goal then bombing them is not very wise. "Clean up" of biological and chemical weapons and their components is a painstaking procedure and one where certain control mechanisms need to be in place for safety. Unless the dropped bombs and resulting fires completely incinerate these items there could be contamination problems galore - not to mention digging through tons of debris to get to the components. 2) During Desert Storm there was little or no talk about "eliminating" Saddam. There is an international agreement that one leader does not design plans, at least overtly, to assassinate another leader. Yet, in the CNN coverage last night there was amble chatting about doing preciously this. I found this turn-about rather interesting. Saddam has been such a pain in the butt over the past years that somehow it is now acceptable for world leaders to opening discuss "taking him out" and dismantling his "evil regime." 3) The peoples of Iraq face the same dilemma that Americans do - removing a unfit leader (some believe his is unfit) from office. Each of our peoples are presented with problems in doing just that. Though considering the growing number of corpses surrounding the Clinton Administration I suspect that these problems that one could encounter are very similar indeed. Re: [CTRL] A kinder, gentler lynch mob - Part I
-Caveat Lector- I like the writing style of this article (at least at the beginning). I disagree with the content. The author has indeed reverted back to his original position that Republicans are Bad, Bad, Bad and Democrats are merely the victim of their cunning abuse of power and viciousness. Please. Clinton got caught with his pants down - quite literally. The Presidency of the United States is THE most powerful "official" position on this planet. The standards of conduct must be held high as the ramifications of indiscretions, even in his personal life, affect countless of millions of lives - not to mention millions of dollars unraveling these antics. There are expected behaviors for all the roles we each have in our lives. Only having sexual relations (as previously understood and not taking into account Clinton's new definition) with one's spouse is an expected behavior of marriage. If this restriction of behavior is unacceptable. Don't get married. On the same note, lying to the people he administers is unacceptable. If Clinton can not abide by this very simple rule of conduct then he needs to step down. Both the Democrats and the Republicans will sling mud to their advantage to garner more seats and consequently more sway in the House and Senate. That's the game. To imply that only the Republicans are playing this game is ridiculous. Btw: I am not a Republican and I am seriously reconsidering my designated "label" of Democrat. And NO, I did not vote for Clinton. BY GARY KAMIYA I grew up believing that Republicans were the incarnation of all evil. This was a harsh and unsophisticated judgment, but the political discourse of 1960s Berkeley, where I grew up, lacked a certain refinement. In fact, to be honest, it was pretty much taken straight from Saturday morning cartoons. In our righteous view, "the people," whoever they were, were always being "oppressed" by The Man, a bloated GOP plutocrat mouthing pious moral maxims. It went without saying that Republicans were self-righteous, mean-spirited rich white men who secretly napalmed Cambodian villages, turned loose the dogs against civil rights marchers and dug the Carpenters. They were Bad, and if we could somehow get rid of them -- meanwhile taking lots of acid and listening to Hendrix -- Good Things would happen. Later, like many of my co-religionists, I became embarrassed by these sentiments. Such crude beliefs were unseemly. Sophistication demanded a more nuanced view. Republicans, I now realized, could be decent men and women who were just parroting the country-club line. Even the Reagan Age -- that endless period I as a Californian was forced to spend under the Great Communicator's genially callous thumb, while the Woolly Mammoths died out and Ice Ages came and went across the globe -- couldn't make me return to the wooden Stalinist sloganeering of my youth. I even reevaluated the Carpenters. And then came the Starr referral and Henry Hyde and the House Judiciary Committee vote, and I realized I had gotten it right the first time. When the Republicans in the full House vote to remove President Clinton from office, as they will almost certainly do, they will prove that those brain- dead radical stereotypes about them really do apply. They will be revealed as mean-spirited, partisan hacks, hypocrites, moral absolutists hiding their craven desire for vengeance and power beneath a ridiculously transparent façade of pious "deliberation" and "respect for law." The GOP will stand exposed before all of America as the party of vicious, petty ideologues who, in their outrageous desire to undo the results of two lawful elections, seized upon a grotesquely acquired legalistic evasion that falls so far short of meeting the constitutional standard of high crimes and misdemeanors as to be laughable. Or, let's give them the benefit of the doubt, as the ever-generous New York Times did in a recent editorial. Let's assume that some of them are actually sincere in their belief that lying about sex -- in an obvious vendetta case brought by a biased and obsessed "independent" counsel who,

DBC Damian, In your conversations, there are two themes that continue to emerge - that of guilt also phrased as shame or humiliation, and secondly, that very shame being used as leverage to force an individual to do something. Much has been written on the psychological aftermath concerning what happened in W.W.II in Europe as with other wars and conquered peoples. As an American, I experience this phenomena steming from what happened to the indigenous people and the black community (slavery) and it will still be many generations before all of these issues are finally resolved. Events of this magnitude take centuries to resolve within a culture - even longer if the "injured" people remain isolated from the larger community. I grew up outside of Washington, D.C. (where there are many large black communities) and I now live in the Southwest near several Indian reservations. The communities are different - the dynamics are the same. I have seen extreme behavior on both sides (white and non-white) in coping with these dynamics. These behaviors from the white population range from shouldering the entire "blame" and loosing themselves in platitudes and servitude to militant opposition and blatant hate campaigns. The behaviors I've observed from the non-white population range from submission with deep resentment and hatred to playing on the guilty feelings some have and trying to get "away" with everything they possibly can. These extreme behaviors will continue until a balance, or rather, as resolution is finally reached. The decision on the Anne Frank diary is likely an extreme move - a cultural adjustment. There have been many prior to this and there will be many more. It may not be to your liking - in which case write your letters of protest however, from a larger perspective it is a predictable and inevitable course of action by a society attempting to find equilibrium. THE KILLER ! Greetings: This is an important address that contains vital information for all of us so as to be well informed of and certainly aware of how we can be directly and adversely affected by the consumption of this artificial sweetener - Aspartame and its marketed labels- as indicated below...read and be informed. Forewarned is Forearmed I sayI know what I'll do: Avoid it like the poison it is..Please pass this info on... WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE and the MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS FOUNDATION F.D.A. ISSUING FOR COLLUSION WITH MONSANTO Article written by Nancy Markle (1120197) I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on "ASPARTAME marketed as 'NutraSweet', 'Equal', and 'Spoonful"'. In the keynote address by the EPA, they announced that there was an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus, and they did not understand what toxin was causing this to be rampant across the United States. I explained that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject. When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in AS PA RTAME coverts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. (Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants). The methanol toxicity mimics multiple sclerosis; thus people were being diagnosed with having multiple sclerosis in error. The multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, where methanol toxicity is. In the case of systemic lupus, we are finding it has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. Also, with methanol toxicity, the victims usually drink three to four 12 oz. Cans of them per day, some even more. In the cases of systemic lupus, which is triggered by ASPARTAME, the victim usually does not know that the aspartame is the culprit The victim continues its use aggravating the lupus to such a degree, that sometimes it becomes life threatening. When we get people off the aspartame, those with systemic lupus usually become asymptomatic. Unfortunately, we can not reverse this disease. On the other hand, in the case of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, (when in reality, the disease is methanol toxicity), most of the symptoms disappear. We have seen cases where their vision has returned and even their hearing has returned. This also applies to cases of tinnitus. During a lecture I said "If you are using ASPARTAME (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc.) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss -- you probably have ASPARTAME DISEASE!" People were jumping up during the lecture saying, "I've got this, is it reversible?" It is rampant. Some of the speakers at my lecture even were suffering from these symptoms. In one lecture attended by the Ambassador of Uganda, he told us that their sugar industry is adding aspartame! He continued by saying that one of the industry leader's son could no longer walk - due in part by product usage! We have a very serious problem. Even a stranger came up to Dr. Espisto (one of my speakers) and myself and said, '1Could you tell me why so many people seem to be coming down with MS?11 During a visit to a hospice, a nurse said that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence. Here is the problem. There were Congressional Hearings when aspartame was included in 100 different products. Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent hearings, but to no avail. Nothing as been done. The drug and chemical lobbies have very deep pockets. Now there are over 5,000 products containing this chemical, and the PATENT HAS EXPIRED! At the time of this first hearing, people were going blind. The methanol in the aspartame converts to formaldehyde in the retina of the eye. Formaldehyde is grouped in the same class of dmgs as cyanide and arsenic-- DEADLY POISONS!!! Unfortunately, it just takes longer to quietly kill, but it is killing people and causing all kinds of neurological problems. Aspartame changes the brain's chemistry. It is the reason for severe seizures. This drug changes the dopamine level in the brain. Imagine what this drug does to patients suffering from Parkinson's Disease. This drug also causes Birth Defects. There is absolutely no reason to take this product. It is NOT A DIET PRODUCT!!! The Congressional record said, "It makes you crave carbohydrates and will make you FAT". Dr. Roberts stated that when he got patients off aspartame, their average weight loss was 19
[CTRL] The Holocaust
I have tried to stay out of this discussion about Anne Frank and the Holocaust. For me, the debate is over. I have yet to figure out why people are even questioning if the Holocaust happened or not. I have photographs that my uncle took when he went into some of the camps. These were never released to the public. He never tried to sell them. He just took some pictures and stuck them in a box with all the other family photos as one of many events that happened in his life. There is also a picture of a very young Mickey Rooney (sp?) sitting on a beach laughing with some friends. Again, this picture was also never released to the public. Am I to believe that my uncle fabricated these photos and them promptly stuck them away? If so, to what end? Was he playing a out some subplot in a larger conspiracy? My mother was a Lt. in the Army, a nurse stationed in southern France. This was not a mobile unit and there were days she would wake up and they would be behind enemy lines. While there, she heard things, saw things...Or did she make it all up? Perhaps she was given orders to do so as part of a bigger cover story. I lived in Israel for a year on two kibbutzim which was no small feat since I am half Lebanese and not Jewish. I heard from many people of their personal experiences - saw the tattooed numbers on their arms. Were they all part of a conspiracy? Were they all sharing in some Great Lie? I can assure you that it didn't feel like a lie when living on a boarder Kibbutz during a Red Alert. Years ago, I walked through the upper rooms where Anne Frank and her family stayed. As a teenager, I read her diary. There are times when court documents are not needed to find the truth. Sometimes, if we listen carefully, well can find the answers in the abundant clues that are left behind such as in photograph showing the eyes of a young girl who died in a concentration camp or in the ambient surroundings of a room off of a small street in Holland. It happened. The end. Hilary Together We Create Heaven on Earth[EMAIL PROTECTED]
